Put in an order for three new pots for the Strat last night, and a couple of .022 uf orange drops. One of them is a DPDT, so I can finally coil tap the bridge. Hopefully it'll all show up by the weekend.  Of course I noticed this morning that all I have left for electric strings around the house is a set of 9's. Guess I need to go hunt down some strings. Debating 11's, but I don't think the low E's saddle has that much play left. Could always just pop the spring out. Whee!

When I first heard the Astronauts, I saw this video, and was amazed at how this *clearly* modern band did such a pitch-perfect period video. speaking of surf what is the typical eq for them? it sounds really mid pushed to get that hollow sound? I been doing that with my v4 and using the mf drive to push the mids (with verb obvi )

I found that I was able to get a 'passable' surf sound by running a reverb pedal (Subdecay Spring Theory) into a Vox Night Train and a Jazzmaster. It was glorious. I think that reverb is more important to tone-stack and other amp stuff to get a surf-y tone.

I just started cranking the spring reverb in the v4 so that must be where that metallic tinge comes from. time for more knob fiddling!

On the topic of guitar tone, if you guys are Modest Mouse fans, Joshua James did a whole album of Modest Mouse covers in 2013, called 'Well, Then, I'll go to Hell.' The nice thing, is that he can sing very well. But, and to make this about guitars, I would love to find out what the lead guitar is playing, because I've been fascinated by that tone for over a year now. I think it's a Tele Deluxe, but I haven't been able to find any concrete information. If you like Modest Mouse, or if you just like good tone, check it out. It's pretty great. I appreciate surf pretty much being the stoner rock of the 50s but never could get into it. Also reminds me of a guy named Benjamin Woods. Godin endorsee who was a metal head, got his guitar stolen, only had an acoustic left, realized that playing his thrash riffs on it sounded like Flamenco, and is now a fairly popular and really good flamenco player.

Much like metal guys, some surf guys are addicted to insane rigs. Exhibit A, The King of Surf Guitar. More favorites from the punk/surf bloodline: JFA and Bl'ast, as well as newcomers FIDLAR and Night Birds quickly coming to mind. I was touring in that garage/surf/punk/trash circuit, circa 2009-2011. Lots of fun to be had. I have to mention Daikaiju as being the most insane live show in the modern surf camp, making MoAM? look tame in comparison.

Daikju is rad but, after I saw them the first time they kinda just repeated their antics the two other times. Set drums on fire, get all the crowd on stage, play while walking through the crowd. Taking gimicky to corny IMHO.

I do not plan on doing this, but I just had a strange thought experiment. Is possible (or reasonable) to replace the tune-o-matic style bridge on a Jaguar or Jazzmaster with a wrap-around style bridge to turn it into a hard-tail? It seems like it could work if the replacement bridge lines up and fits into the existing inserts. Hanging something from the ceiling sounds like your goal is to make sure nothing dampens the vibrations rather than eliminate them. But even then it would dampen vertical vibrations, but not vibrations in any other direction. If anything, I would think that would make things worse. I feel like it would result in the opposite of what you are describing. Unless I am just not understanding what you mean. I feel like you would get really unexpected and inconsistent results. Then again, maybe that was what he was going for. Musicians are a superstitious bunch when it comes to "tone" so for all I know it doesn't do a drat thing.

I consider them friends, so I'm far from partial, but I don't dispute that they have a consistent bit. I just don't know how they can dial the show up to be any more intense, and you can't dial it back once you've been doing it the way they've been doing it. They're stuck, in that regard. I've also been seeing them off and on for five years, so I've seen slight permutations of their act - versions with two drummers; the current drummer, Gabe, crowd surfing and drumming while the crowd holds up his drums; Sean crowdsurfing while he plays lead (at a house show, I saw him crowdsurf from the living room, through a window overlooking the room, onto people on the second floor, while playing basically the whole time); giving their instruments to people in the crowd; climbing PA towers; etc. They're hard working dudes. Second best part of Dick Dale's rig, after the bonkers suspend-the-reverb-from-the-ceiling component, is the 16 gauge strings. Jesus.

Yeah. I'm a fan of surf, but I'm doubly a fan of Dick Dale as a person. If you read his wiki entry, this interview, watch this video of him playing at the tender age of 71 years young while recovering from rectal cancer, and read this anecdote about him pushing Leo Fender to make the first 100 watt amp, you can only conclude that he is guitar's Bill Brasky. The surf music scene at its worst shares things in common with rockabilly - slavish dedication to formula and neckbeardy costume wearing spazzlords rambling about "tone". But at its best, it's just an energetic party, and Dale is a human embodiment of that.

Passed down from the Arabs to the Spanish through hundreds of years of Moorish occupation, on to the Americas through colonisation, on to the surf rockers by Latin Americans in California, and then finally picked up by black metallers who just like it because it sounds "evil" (and probably stole it from 80s goth anyway).

don't feel like quoting both cause of phone but, from the spring reverb aspect I have had friends rehouse fender twins and they ended up having to put the head on the ground because their 412s rattle a bit too much that the spring reverb sounds like poop so I was guessing what dick was trying to avoid with his rig. and for Dai, like I said I enjoyed it the first time for sure but the second time, I dunno I was just bored. I guess, without sounding rude, the music itself doesn't challenge much. Not like that is their goal of course but, once I got through the theatrics there was not much else, but they are very good at what they do and people here do love them. if you know them and if they wanna play a house next time in Columbia, lemme know. I think that may respark my interest
