Saabs, not even once.

I grew up in a small town in Iowa and remember a house a few blocks down that had a Saab of some boxy variety. It resided in the driveway, was some vintage that implied it was less than ten years old, yet it never moved. No rust on the body, looked beautiful, yet I never once saw it outside of the small square where it lived in the driveway. Never encountered on the road around a town of 2000 people.

I still lust after non-running Saab. Like I lust after an opium addiction, good times with no productivity.

They gently caress with my router/cable modem and then none of my devices will connect to the router any more.

Tech support :downs: Well, you have to many devices connected to the router.
Myself :argh: I am pretty sure every thing worked fine before, it was fine until you guys reset my router or what ever.
:downs: Well, sir, 3 devices is to many
:argh: I have 5 devices on the router and it never had an issues, 2 phones, 2 tablets and 1 laptop. That should hardly give an issues seeing how theres only 2 or 3 in use at any given time.
:downs: Well, you need less devices.
:argh: Fine, just turn off the wifi, I will go find my router out of storage.
:downs: Using external routers is against the terms of service sir.
:argh: Then ill run really long extension cords. Bye

I hate not having an actual phone. Angrily pushing end call on a smart phone doesn't bring the satisfaction of slamming a phone on the receiver.

Secondly: WRTG54 - Its having a few issues with keeping connections.... Update firmware?

Used to be Tier 1 support for those guys, and I can say gently caress MEDIACOM with feeling and venom. The poor bastard on the other end of the phone was flat lying to you, though, their TOS doesn't say poo poo about external routers, just that they won't offer support for them. Come to think of it, I just might do that myself.

My best costume was Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker. I stayed in character the entire night and it got better the more I drank...or at least I think it got better. I even memorized the sketch where he speaks to a Mexican family and learned some additional Spanish vocab words so I could just switch into speaking Spanish, but as Matt Foley.

I wanted to build a breakaway table to go with the costume and the act, but I didn't have the time.

I've been tier 1 for one ISP, "tier 2" for Roadrunner/TWC, and actual tier 2 for Frontier.

Every ISP I've worked for, and used, had the same policy - use your own router if you want, just know we won't hold your hand if you break it. Unless it's Frontier, then they'll tell you that they'll support it if you pay an extra $20/month for premium tech support, then give a halfassed attempt while trying to upsell you on identity protection. Then try to upsell on antivirus. Then try to upsell on backup software. Then keep trying to upsell. Then somehow drop the call if you were in danger of ruining your average call time for the day.

Ebola chat.

Was watching the local news earlier. They showed a shot of the sign in front of the apartment complex of the family that's been quarantined. Okay fine, there's still several hundred apartments there.

Then zoomed in on the sign that has the building number. A lot of older apartments here have an individual street address for every building - that sign actually had the full street address on it along with the building #, so you no longer need to google the name of the property to get an address.

Then they zoomed in on the front door, clearly showing the actual apartment number, and the anchors kept repeating the apartment number. :wtc:

Then interviewed parents at a nearby school. One parent said she wanted to know "where these people live". If she caught that broadcast, she got her wish. Looks like they've edited the clips that are online to remove that parent's comments, but there's still a lot of video online showing their address.

.... they also interviewed a lot of people who live in the same apartment complex. There was a lot of anger.

I feel really bad for that family, they're likely going to be victims of a lot of poo poo once the quarantine is lifted/cops leave. I'm used to seeing a full address for criminal stuff in a small town, not so much giving out the address of a family dealing with diseases in one of the largest metro areas in the US.

That's.... usually if it was a modem issued by the ISP. I hope that's still the case anyway.

But yeah, they're cheap enough brand new, I think a current Motorola Surfboard (which includes a 4 or 5 port switch and wifi) isn't much more than $60 at Wal-Mart. It's not cheap, but it's a hell of a lot less than what I once paid for a 2400 bps modem. :corsair:

And bitching about how long it took. ARE YOU loving KIDDING ME?!?!? :fuckoff:

I had something a lot longer and bitchier typed up about what I've gone through trying to get orders out on time, but it boiled down to "ring doorbell just as tornado sirens go off, customer tells me I'm loving crazy and makes me shelter with his family for 15 minutes, walk out afterwards to find my car missing almost all of its glass and moved several hundred feet, customer got free pizza for a long time".

The last time I delivered in a storm like what we had yesterday, I rang the doorbell just as sirens went off. Door opened, basically got yanked inside and told to shelter with the rest of the family, and hid in an interior closet with them. Walked out to find a destroyed car and neighborhood - lots of tree and roof damage to the neighborhood and their house, lots of car damage. My car was still idling, but wasn't near where I left it (it was a couple of houses away and turned at a weird angle) and had most of the glass broken, along with a lot of hail damage.

That storm was around 2001. Tornado touched down a few streets away. :stare: It was dead calm when I pulled up in front of their house, except for being pitch black outside. It was bright daylight when I walked back out.

That was really nice of those people to pull you inside instead of letting you back out there.

randomidiot
May 12, 2006

Damnit. You quoted the pre-edit.

But yeah, my ears were already popping when I hit the doorbell, my radio was blasting a tornado warning while I was driving out there, and the weather went from "freaky calm but a really weird dark green sky and almost no light at 3pm" to "hailing sideways" in the time between my ringing the doorbell and them opening the door. I was really stupid when I was in my early 20s (okay still really stupid, just more experienced).

Don't ever want to be that close to something like that again. I love storms until they're trying to remove the building I'm in from its foundation. And it's also how I learned why it's so important to carry anything beyond bare minimum insurance.

I've been caught in several bad storms since then, while doing delivery. These days I pull into the first thing I can find with a roof (usually gas station), then call the customer and tell them "hey there's baseball sized hail, I'm stuck, I'm gonna be a few minutes late, unless you want to drive your S Class over here in this poo poo". So far everyone has opted to wait the 10-20 minutes for the hail to stop.

edit: huh, watching the news right now. One entire ISD (Arlington) is closed due to storm damage, much of another one (Dallas) is closed due to not having power at schools, and an entire university (UT Arlington) is closed for the same reason (no power). I never lost power, but my insurance companies are going to hate me. Roof damage, garage door damage, car damage, fence damage, tree damage, broken windows on the house. :cripes:

edit 2: okay, damage I've found so far: all 3 cars damaged to some degree (Avalon is the closest to being totaled at first glance - broken windshield, sunroof sits funny, rest of it looks like the surface of the moon, has a bit of interior water intrusion). A chunk of the shingles from the house's roof are missing, gutter peeled off in a couple of areas, garage's overhead door is sitting odd and has a lot of dents. One tree doesn't know how to tree anymore, another is leaning at a non-tree angle. Backyard fence has a funky lean going, we won't even discuss the gates, driveway (which is behind the house) is covered in tree poo poo and random car poo poo. :cripes: At least it's only straight line wind damage instead of tornado.

I used to love storms. I bought my first house last October, and we had a massive storm here in July. A tornado touched down literally in my backyard and traveled about a mile before it lifted up. I lost eleven trees though had only gutter damage to the house itself.

A huge spruce fell about a foot from the Volvo that was parked next to it.

I'm still cleaning up after that storm. gently caress storms. gently caress them right in their twister hole.
