kik2dagroin posted:http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/daily/2014/10/02/democrats_will_politicize_ebola_just_like_they_politicized_aids I like how Rush doesn't understand how a disease like Ebola is a threat to the world and not just the countries in Africa it's currently affecting. Rush, a supposed campion of free-market capitalism, doesn't understand how the concept of globalization makes it possible for what would have been decades before isolated incidents of epidemics in one geographic location can easily become a global pandemic. There's nothing political about trying to stop a deadly and highly infectious virus from spreading to other parts of the world and becoming established. Western Africa is an economically developing region. It's not just Africans that are going to these locations. Multinational companies operate in these countries and their employees have just of a chance of bringing back Ebola as an African immigrant.

Letters of Marque worked for the British during the Napoleonic Wars. Sortof. I see that whole phenomenon as more an attempt to legalize & regulate & co-op piracy than as an attempt to actually hire a mercenary navy, though -- see, e.g., Henry Morgan.

Do the people who think we should ban all flights from Ebola-stricken countries now think that other countries should do the same to us since Ebola is here? Or should we just ban all travel to and from the state of Texas?

No, because ~exceptionalism~. It's the same reason that we have this moral imperative to bomb the poo poo out of anyone for whichever reason, but the moment it comes back to the US in some form it is an evil act that requires further display of force.

Rush has spent literally the entire show hitching about liberals not wanting to discriminate and that is why we have someone with Ebola here. He mentioned Obama ordered a stop of planes to Israel a few months ago for political reasons and now Obama is too feckless to stop all traffic. Of course Obama won't stop air traffic from Africa, because that would be closing the borders and he told a bunch of Mexicans yesterday he has no plans to close the border. I really don't know how someone can say that poo poo without a bit of irony or self reflection.

Yeah. I just don't get how he can call the cdc a bunch of liberals and scream: 'I THOUGHT IT WAS HARD TO GET' over and over and over again. He talks like every current government employee had a one on one interview with president Obama. And then after a week the president liked them so decided to make them cdc analyst 1.

It definitely makes me feel worse that instead of just being a lone crazy person, it's actually profitable and marketable to cynically pretend to believe that liberals want to spread Ebola around because they think it's unfair that it's only in a few countries.

The CDC has actually been all over the board on their public awarenes with ebola. They're mostly trying to keep the public calm right now, so they've been focusing on the "hard to get" line. For example in some of their statements they've claimed you need direct physical contact with an infected person, which is false (contact with infected bodily fluids can do it, without UV exposure the virus can linger in contaminated material for some time, and potentially it may be spread via aerosolized bodily fluids as well). Not that Rush is the right person to be pointing that out, but in this case it's the figment of truth that lend his lies credibility.

What Conservatives believe: gently caress everyone and everything else, the things that benefit me and my cronies are what matter. Profit above all else. gently caress you, got mine. What people who say dangerous things they don't believe for money believe: gently caress everyone and everything else, the things that benefit me and my cronies are what matter. Profit above all else. gently caress you, got mine. You can't really be disingenuous about being a hardline conservative because whether or not you 'believe' you're still someone advocating that people behave in manners that will harm great amounts of people simply because you personally stand to benefit.

So I'm starting to get quite rustled at how heavily Fox News is trying to incite panic over ebola, with the obvious intent to make people fear immigration. The usual easily disporved talking points, unsubtle racism, etc, I can just roll my eyes at - but this ebola bullshit is seriously pissing me off. They could get a lot of people killed with the poo poo they're saying (like talking about how the CDC doesn't know what they're doing, reporting "ebola like symptoms (aka an African guy with a flu)" as a confirmed case... I don't know, am I alone in this?

It's definitely enraging but I honestly think this is par for the course. Right-wing media tends to focus predominantly on instilling fear in its consumers. A single ebola infection can easily be paraded around as direct personal failure of Obama himself, used as another exhibit of how totally incompetent Big Government is, while also furthering the notion that scientists and/or doctors are ivy tower latte sipping nitwits that don't know as much about the world as you do with your razor honed notion of 'common sense'. While to people that understand nuance and complexities something like an ebola infection here was bound to happen eventually given the interconnectedness of the world these days and the severity of the outbreak in West Africa. A patient zero appearing on American shores (WHO WAS DEFINITELY COMING HERE ILLEGALLY!!!! ) allows the right to smugly recline back in their chairs, take a puff of their cigars, and smirk as they exhale a plume of smoke in your face and say "I told you so " while they offhand in Congress vote to defund basic public services like the CDC and divert those funds to building giant walls around America to keep those infected illegal immigrants out. Midterms are also coming up and the right seems to be engaged in a truly ironic form of projection whereby they accuse Obama of using ebola to influence elections while freaking people the gently caress out about getting infected with ebola because Obama.
