Gilbert seems pissed aboot the Worlds and probably will do some damage tomorrow. "I won’t speak about the World Championships. I have fulfilled my duty for the Belgian national team and for my sponsor,” he said bluntly.

I'm pretty sure the free promotional images in ~every magazine that carries bicycle news in the world~ far outweighs the cost of paying their top ranking special design hand painter the triple time for one nights work.

Imagine all the yellow Specialized Venges and Cavendish branded components that had to be put back in their boxes last year in Corsica when Cav didn't get yellow. I wonder if it was the same stuff they had to put away again this year.

Same. I was actually yelling at my TV when that happened. Also, to answer my own question from earlier, Kwiatkowski got a cramp in his right leg but wanted to finish anyway. That makes more sense than my previous theory of "he's being passive-aggressive about having crashed".

Was going to say that was a bit of a disappointing and slightly wierd end to the season, then I remembered the Tour of Beijing which is infinitely wierder and more disappointing. Shame this season generally sucked once Roubaix was over.

Astana have pulled out of the Tour of Beijing as they have to follow the MPCC rules that state they need to be suspended if 2 riders test positive within a 12 month period.

The whole timing of the announcements was to allow them to race the weekend but skip Beijing. Rather questionable way of handling it.

30+ would leave too many big gaps to start the race out.

Russian Bear posted:30+ would leave too many big gaps to start the race out. Good. Incredibly short TTT's mean teams of the favourites can get away with loading their squad with skinny climbing domestiques and only 1-2 really powerful guys to pull the peloton on the flat. If they had to contend with possibly being 5 minutes down after the first stage they might not do that and then you wouldn't have 5 riders on the front on the mountain finishes.

My, what I think is, original idea: have a TTT very late in a GT (middle to end of 3rd week).

One of my team's sponsor was stomachofanger.com and I had to explain the the whole chaingate incident to someone the other day. He was a boring rider really unless he was doing something stupid, like him and Franck losing to Gilbert at LBL.
|
# ? Oct 9, 2014 14:31 |

I didn't think he was all that boring tbh, but then again I do have a bit of a soft spot for climbers who can't time trial In the LBL he won he went at about 20 k out after Gilbert who had escaped earlier, and Gilbert just could not follow him. The tour of 2010 with him and Contador was fun to watch too, as was 2011 with Evans: lose time in wet descent, attack with 60k to go to get yellow and lose it the day after by losing over 2 minutes in the final time trial. If he had a better head to go with his legs we'd probably think that Contador was a boring, consolidating rider by now.
