Come to think of it wouldn't the mummy's tech (teleporter + invisibility field) be just what you'd need to secretly save people just before they die? It would make sense for the mysterious season antagonists to be after it.

I actually didn't like this one much. I'm a fan of Frank Skinner but I thought his character was very flat and under-acted. A few very nice scenes still, though!

There's a bit where Capaldi's talking to himself in the bedroom, and he does an absolutely dead-on Tom Baker impression saying 'A mummy, that only the victim can see.' It's incredible.

This is from a few pages back but it was awesome seeing how when The Doctor speaks to himself he gets to speak to previous incarnations.

Fun episode; the mummy's endless duty was quite poignant when revealed.

We spent the episode arguing over who the voice of Gus was; Mr Boods said, 'It's some tosser who excels at being unctious' -- ah, John Sessions strikes again. No surprises there.

The real 'No WAY, that was HIM?!' cross-checked with IMdb was the mummy-professor-expert*: Mr Time has done strange things to Christopher Villiers.

Gus had been trying to get The Doctor onto the space train for a while, and the phone call at the end of The Big Bang was one of those attempts.

I'm pretty sure that was Capaldi.

This episode had all the makings of absolute garbage. I said earlier this week that it looked pretty much exactly like Voyage of the Damned, and it had the makings of an episode like that at first, until... I dunno, at some point it rose above the sum of its parts and became good. I can't in all good conscience estimate when, because I was taken by personal bias when I realized that Foxes opened the episode with my favorite Queen song.

I also have to say that while I did like the Forewarned's concept, I didn't like that everything about it was so back-loaded. I think a 'mystery monster' like this is great if it's a puzzle that the audience is invited along to solve themselves, but we just didn't have enough information about him to do that at all until the end.

edited to add (and forgive me if this has been mentioned; I've got a headache from the paint stripper Mr Boods is slapping on the front door): I've been reading on another message board the theory that Gus's monocle is actually a fob watch, Frank Skinner's character is the Master, and Missy calls herself that because the Master is actually her boyfriend. :yum:

Q: If you had to write an episode about the return of the Master, how would you go about it? What would be his response to the Doctor's current regeneration and how would that affect his characterization?

A:You do all know that the new Doctor is really the Master? Is that not clear to everyone by now? He couldn't be that callous and be The Doctor. That's why the regeneration was so abrupt. The master beamed out the regenerating 11 and beamed himself in. Simples.

Q: what's the scariest being that the Doctor has faced, in your opinion?

A: Cancellation.

Obligatory tired of the ceaseless negativity in this thread etc. etc.

I was honestly expecting this one to be this year's "let's give one of the actors a break" episode, and was pleasantly surprised to see that Jenna Coleman was in fact in it. And then, just when it was looking like the episode was going to sideline her, she had what was arguably the most pivotal scene in the thing. So yeah, pleasant surprises all around.

And yeah, the Doctor actually felt like the Doctor this time around without losing that lost/broken aspect they've been developing all year, which is a delicate balance to strike. I don't think I've ever been so impressed with the way Capaldi played him (and I was already a huge admirer).

That conversation they had on the rocky shore at the end was pure gold, especially the Doctor being completely honest with her about not actually knowing if he could save Maisie, and what he would have done if he couldn't.

And that cover of Don't Stop Me Now holy poo poo. It was already one of my favorite Queen songs.

More of this, please.

Or the Master (or someone) possessing the Doctor. Would put a huge spin on that talking-to-himself scene.

(I don't think this is actually happening, and I don't really want it to be happening. But my brain is even now manufacturing reasons why it could be.)

Noooooo.. he isn't evil like the Valeyard, he just arrogant, stuck up his own rear end and doesn't give a gently caress about people. The mummy proved this. Matt Smith would have done everything in his power to save these people. Capaldi was all like 'meh your turn to die next, you cant stop it so give me a running commentary.'

The Valeyard was a terrible idea and absolutely no one anywhere wants him back or has ever wanted him back. (Though I always thought that putting your "like the Doctor but EEEEEVILLLL" character in an episode with the Master was pretty funny.)

I am almost certainly wrong about this, aren't I?

It's going to be the loving Valeyard, isn't it?

Actually I'm going with the comedy option of Omega.

(Actually actually I sincerely hope Omega shows up sooner or later.)

I think this is a misreading of the episode. As soon as he thought he had any chance of saving someone he jumped right in and did so at great personal risk. The difference between him and Smith is that he admitted he couldn't save the previous victims (since it's not like Smith never let anyone die).

Edit: and yeah, i forget who mentioned it before (probably several people), but Capaldi was DEFINITELY having a conversation between 12 and 4 (real or just amusing himself) and I hope he keeps doing that with other Doctors.

Edit edit: Also, I liked the quick turnaround on "How many people have to die before you stop being in denial!" "Turns out its 3."

ANIME IS FOR ADULTS
I think if I read the script for this I would think it was silly, but this episode was fantastic. Absolutely elevated by the acting, the costumes/set and music, plus an important moment between Clara and the Doctor at the end that keeps it from being a throwaway story.

I think it's wrong to say that Capaldi's Doctor doesn't care about people. My interpretation is that he is just much colder and less emotional than previous Doctors. That's not the same as saying he doesn't care. He just recognises when someone is doomed and uses it to gather information to play the numbers. Similarly he doesn't have time for emotional outbursts if he perceives that it risks someone else getting hurt (see his line about not having time to mourn this episode). He is 'the needs of the many...' taken to its logical conclusion.

This is a principle that is, in many ways, correct, but God drat does it make you look like a dick if you follow it to its logical conclusion.

The difference is Smith was compassionate and tried, Capaldi is cold and tells them so. Just like he did Alan a'Dale in the Robin Hood episode where he constantly reminded him he only had 6 months to live.

It's exactly what he did in 'Into the Dalek' with the tracer pill he got the guy to swallow. They're doing a great job with consistent characterisation considering it's a new Doctor with multiple writers. It's almost as if they had a script editor who's doing his job!

Yeah, really liked that one, a nice surprise after last week's turd. I even liked Frank Skinner and he usually annoys the hell out of me. I assume we're going to find out who Gus is at some point?
