Thoughts on the season so far:

Reconguista in G is one of those shows which requires the three-episode test. Tomino is a famously flawed director, known for his weird issues with women and or poorly communicating his stories, assuming we have as much of an implicit understanding of what's going on as he does (there's a difference between refusing to hold the reader's hand and putting in the clues for them to figure it out themselves and going 'Oh, one of the main characters of the franchise is evil again. Did I not mention that?'). Those flaws are frontloaded in Reconguista, and are accompanied by fight scenes that are uglier and more visually confusing than they probably should be (especially compared to what the other Gundam show this season is offering). Then Episode 3 rolls along, and everything starts smoothing out. You get more of a grip on the characters' personalities and motivations, the action is cleaner and easier to follow, the withheld information starts to seem more Tomino setting up tantalising mysteries than forgetting a couple of pages from his script, and the quirky attention to detail in the animation really starts shining. Looks like crazy anime grandpa hasn't completely lost it after all. Also, the fact that the female lead eventually responds to the male lead Gundamjacking her by Gundamjacking him right back and press-ganging him into her band of space pirates (yarr) is pretty neat.

Raraya is still pretty awful, though.

Garo is unapologetic late-night sleaze (introducing one of your main characters by having him murder an evil demonic sex worker has to be one of the most cliched ways to set up a 2edgy4u grimdark atmosphere by now), but if you were brought up on gory Go Nagai OVAs from the '80s, it'll scratch your itch comfortably. The visual style is impressive, even if it suffers from not having the titanic budget of Mappa's other show this season, and the OP feels like it was directed by Yuasa himself. The setting is refreshingly unusual (an anime set in medieval Spain during the time of the Inquisition? Sure, I'm up for that), the characters are broadly-drawn but have some nice nuance to them (Papa Knight's shrug when leaving his boss was delightfully :smug:), the show isn't completely unwilling to have fun amidst all the grittiness, and the female lead gets to demonstrate that she can walk the monster-slaying walk as well as talk the talk when she single-handedly takes down the monster the heroes are supposed to be rescuing her from when they get caught up in some inconveniently-timed family drama. That isn't as common as it should be in this sort of show.

Log Horizon 2 is still the same as ever, if slightly uglier. It was never a pretty show, especially when compared to the other big trapped-in-an-MMO series, but Deen taking the reins has resulted in a noticeable graphical downgrade. Fortunately, everything else is still in place.

Madan no Ou to Vanadis surpassed my admittedly low expectations. It's a 'scantily-clad girls hit each other over the head with magic swords (and crush on the male lead)' show, but both the characters and the writing seem to be up a few IQ points from the usual, with intelligent discussion of political manoeuvring and military law and unusually sensible reactions to the various events of the story. The main couple is likeable, not least because they're so unapologetic (by anime standards) about having the hots for each other, and the general matter-of-fact tone is very refreshing. Also, the OP music is the most cheesily fantasy thing ever and I love it.

The way the second half of episode 2 seemed to come right out of Sword Art Online did put a significant dent in my enjoyment, though. Racing against time to save your woman from being dishonoured by Evil Dudes is one of the laziest, ugliest ways to create tension out there, and the sleazy male-gaze during and after the attempted rape scene didn't help. C'mon, show, fuckin' Garo handled rape more tastefully than you did. Shape up, and for the love of God, don't do this again.

Cross Ange was... nah, just kidding, of course I didn't watch this. A big 'thank you' to all the dumb lemmings who charged in despite the early warning signs and made sure I would stay way the hell away from this awful, awful show, though.

The Seven Deadly Sins is geneic shonen with Kid Goku as the protagonist rather than Ichigo Kurosaki, and doesn't even look that good. Not even the quirky, Western-cartoony window-dressing or Hiroyuki Sawano doing his usual solid work (with some Celtic influences this time, which hits all my buttons) was enough to convince me to give it a serious go.

You know how sometimes, you look at a story and wonder what it might be like with the best possible staff and an unlimited budget? Rage of Bahamut is probably the closest we're ever going to get to that dreamed-after fantasy show. Cygames opened the vaults of Croesus and poured their contents into this anime, and it was money well-spent. It reminded me very much of Tiger & Bunny or Gundam Build Fighters, a show based on an established narrative theme (high fantasy, superheroes, toy-advert sports shows) where every element was carefully designed to foster as much appeal to as many people as possible and make the studio the biggest possible amount of money, and yet where it's executed with enough talent, self-awareness, and charming earnestness that the above becomes a strength rather than a flaw because hell, they actually are successfully making a show anyone can enjoy. And this time they've got a Hollywood-scale budget backing them up. Speaking of Tiger and Bunny, Masakazu Katsura's character designs do seem to have got uglier since that show, but it's not a total dealbreaker, and in some ways adds to the overall goofy charm. Also, they seem to be following T&B's footsteps in aiming for equal-opportunity fanservice, which is a nice touch. High fantasy is known for getting kind of 'no girls allowed'. Actually, is Katsura the only staff member from Tiger and Bunny involved in this show? I'm getting really familiar vibes from Bahamut.

Battle In The Usually Daze was as I expected - a more conventional story puts the brakes on Trigger's worst excesses, but it also dampens the studio's anarchic charms a bit. I didn't love it, but I'll give it another episode to see where they're going.

Build Fighters Try is more Build Fighters, and as fun as ever, but this time with the tantalising possibility that we might be getting that rarest of things in Gundam - a competent, plot-important female protagonist. Come on, GBF, you managed to include a Tragic Victim Newtype Girl last season who came out the other end happy and alive and even had the (very) occasional chance to be something approaching badass along the way. Baby steps, baby steps.

Chaika - Avenging Battle aired. Still Chaika, still good. Mm. Also, it's neat that this looks like it might be the series for answers after the first one kept raising more and more questions. Gives a viewer confidence.

Still need to watch Parasyte, Unlimited Blade Works, Shirobako, and Your Lie In April.

Melodias is more budget Kenshin then Goku, really. A babyfaced vet with a tragic past trying to gloss over everything by putting a happy face on it and always holding back so he doesn't hurt anyone. He's still my least favorite Sin, though.

I was expecting Seven Deadly Sins to be popular, but I really underestimated how off-putting the first couple chapters would be when stretched over entire episodes instead of like a few minutes of your time before things start getting better when reading the manga. I wonder how it will end up doing in Japan.

I think I've got my own watch list mostly narrowed down, but I've got a few outliers I need to see more of before I decide to drop them or not. Haven't gotten around to watching Rage of Bahamut or Twin-Tails yet, either. Funi streams are the worst.

I guess that's the only reasonable option left. Moving on...

F/SN Unlimited Blade Works: Other people have already discussed these episodes in detail, but I'm really surprised by how well this show is directed. This adaptation gives more of an air of maturity to the production, more in line with the tone of Fate/Zero, than what the material alone would suggest if you simply read a general description of these events. You get a good idea of who Rin and Shirou are as characters and the exposition isn't quite as tiresome as it could have been. Pretty great action sequences too.

Reconguista in G: Much like Overman King Gainer, it's all in good fun so far. Tomino always has a knack for creating interesting and entertaining worlds. The characters still have their weird quirks and the setting still requires more explanations, which we may or may not receive in due time, but the end result is strangely charming rather than annoying so I'm enjoying the experience. Even the slapstick humor was kind of amusing. The animation could afford to be a little cleaner in places, but the general look and feel is nostalgic yet refreshing.

She was losing to a random mook from the other club. I don't have high hopes for her remaining useful in light of Reiji2 and champion kid. She doesn't have the good fortune to be the daughter of a champion either.

It's a bit more complicated than that - he was a club leader like her, he had an equipment advantage due to superior resources, and she was distracted by covering for someone she thought was a total rookie. She's unlikely to be a monster like Sekai, but her first episode said 'talented pilot with room for improvement', and lead characters get arcs, so she's got better odds than any Gundam heroine in recent memory.

Celestial Method is a weird show. After two episodes I'm still not sure what it's even trying to be. Then again, being oddly obtuse is the only reason I'm watching it, so whatever I guess. I'll give it one more episode.

My reaction was "First episode was a lot of fun!" followed by "There's no way they can sustain this and keep it interesting."

Giving it three episodes to see if it has anything up it's sleeve to keep it from getting hella repetitive but I'm not optimistic.

Apparently based on LN spoilers, an actual opponent who uses their powers does show up. However, their antagonism is because they're a bigger Chuuni than the MC.

Chloe Lemaire is just the best. The way she talks and her attempts at pronouncing her name are hilarious. I'll probably watch the whole thing just for her (and only for her, most likely, I didn't gave a drat about the rest of the cast).

While watching the episode, you can also play a drinking game where you take a shot every time you correctly guess the seiyuu. Because there's a shitload of the them. As a bonus, you'll find out how much of anime nerd you are (and if you guessed right at least half of them, you will not even need to drown your sadness in the alcohol because by that point you're already going to be drunk :v:).

That doesn't sound interesting at all.

The first step to a supernatural comedy like Inou Battle is to relate what's going on to everyday life, and then make a clever twist on it. That's what made The Devil is a Part Timer so popular here, it really did convince you that an ambitious dark lord would gets weirdly into selling fast food, and it was funny to think about a fast food worker secretly being a dark lord. Oh, and it was really well made, of course.

Inou Battle has nothing like that, just a bunch of character quirks piled together without forming into anything worth watching, and it doesn't have anything on it's mind other than how to best beg for the audience's attention by piling up a bunch of previously successful things. I think the only reason it's getting any attention is Trigger's name and that it's not aggressively bad like other shows which try the same thing.

Personally, it has my attention because I thought the manga chapter that got translated was really funny. It seemed like not a lot of the humor from that came through in the first episode, though. Hopefully it gets funnier.
