The only prison I ever had catch fire was my attempt at a worst case prison.

Never stopped the flow of prisoners. Max only. 1 holding cell. 1 canteen with 1 table 2 benches a just enough of a kitchen and serving tables. A tiny little shower for everyone. No common area or yard. Only upgrades were security stuff like armed guards.

Eventually caught fire during a riot.

I've seen fun you people wouldn't believe.
Tiki torches on fire off the summit of Kilauea.
I watched disco balls glitter in the dark near the Brandenburg Gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like crowds in rain.

Time to sleep.
My only fire happened in the showers :psyduck:

Shower riot after like 2~3 days of straight shower only scheduling. The 2 shower rooms got mostly destroyed and the fire + riot resulted in I think 65 deaths. It was like my second prison and was pretty awful.

I think I read something here a while back about funneling prisoner tunnels in a certain direction to make it easier to catch them in the act. How does that work? Large pipes leading from cell block toilets to a guarded pump station? It would need to be enclosed for it to be guarded, and if it's enclosed then prisoners won't dig out there, no?

When you use the perimeter walls, you still need to have weak points in them with gates or similar. The tunneling prisoners will try to exploit that weakness, and you can counter-exploit that by placing dog patrols near the guaranteed route they will take.

Armed guard patrols at the likely exit point would be good too. I'm not sure if they'll shoot escaping prisoners without being told to go weapons free but if they have tasers...

Use large pipes to 'collect' tunnels from areas and to direct them towards the holes. That way in theory you only need one hole in the wall and has the added benefit of letting you place dogs along that pipe route to get early detect of breakout attempts (though early may be a misnomer given how quickly they tunnel through large pipes, especially when there's multiple prisoners).

It's treating them in game as combination intake/outtake pipes, so the inmates are tunneling through the waste disposal pipes, like in Shawshank Redemption.

So I've had a few prisons that I felt were set up pretty well buy my make problem keeps coming back to the canteen. I keep setting up kitchens and have my cooks working away and they cook food but never set out out to the prisoners. Any ideas?

Quick edit how do I make my showers stop spewing water all over? I put a drain under each shower head and connected it but it's like an ocean each time some dude goes to get clean.

Got enough serving tables in the canteen? And easily accessible from the kitchen?

The drains are more like water-blockers than water-suckers. Place them to block exits from the shower area.

They certainly aren't proofread. They might have tossed them through a swear filter. Hopefully they'll get properly addressed at some point.

The only prisoner bio I've seen that I really liked was Wild Snorlax (arrested for lotering on Route 12), though they're not all bad.

Are you changing the schedule a lot? The cooks have to start well before it's actually meal time, so messing around with the schedule can gently caress them up. Other than that, canteens with messed up deployment, or not having serving tables, I can't think of anything else that would cause the cooks to never deliver food.

Oh, and Jones was there too.

Sometimes cooks deliver food but they haven't managed to wash any serving trays so nobody eats it. Sometimes prisoners just hang around in the center of the room screaming about food and rioting when the food is right there. If you have multiple schedules the cooks will produce a silly amount of food for your single PC prisoner and then bin it all. Food has some work needed.

At one point you could pay for a "deluxe" alpha where you got to design and name a character. If you paid them like a grand they would let you make a warden (because apparently there will be different wardens at some point)

Is there any variety to what your prisoners build in a workshop? As far as I can tell the saws do nothing, and the presses only make license plates.

Also, what variables determine how many prisoners you get? My first prison, which I sold, only ever got 8 new arrivals at a time while my second prison got 24 inmates on the first intake.

Lastly, why is it that hardly anyone ever passes the kitchen classes, but working with a loving bandsaw, well that's easy to learn?

hailthefish

Saws cut the sheets of metal into blank license plates, and the presses turn the blanks into license plates.

Saws also cut wooden logs into wooden planks, which sell for more money, and are also required to construct fancy beds with a carpenter table.

The classes are about the same difficulty I think, but attendance has a strong impact on how your prisoners do, so there may be something interfering with their ability to attend all the cooking classes, maybe?

Designate some open area of your prison as "Forestry", and your gardeners will plant trees, then chop them down when they're fully grown. Then your prisoners will turn logs into planks and beds, which are more lucrative than license plates. However, your prison will automatically buy sheet metal for license plates when you have the money for it.

I recruited an extremely tough guy once as a CI. He got jumped a couple times but obviously made it through each time. Although I think ideally you don't want your CIs getting discovered in the first place.
Right now the #1 thing I look for in a CI is length of stay. No point recruiting a guy who's only gonna be at your prison for like 3 days

Also I don't bother with amenities in my solitary cells. I try not to make the punishment too long and it should be a punishment anyway, so hold that bladder mister

Nettle Soup posted:

I'm pretty sure this is sometimes because there aren't enough serving tables. Each one can only serve 3 prisoners at a time, which includes the moment a prisoner walks over to the table to grab food before another prisoner can grab a tray from the same spot.

Prisoners with too many unmet needs can't get good concentration in classes, so they don't build up sufficient chance to succeed. So make sure anyone you want to do work is doing well.

I have an interesting prisoner. Extremely Tough, Deadly, Snitch and I think Ex Cop.
They'd start fights with him since he's a Snitch and he'd just one-hit kill them back :geno: I had to put him in Protective to protect the other prisoners.

Until they add some way for us to feed these monsters in their cells, there's no effective protection of them / from them. I just lump them all together in the same cell block and let them have at each other. Instigators get an instant upgrade to SuperMax, Snitches get an instant upgrade to Protective Custody.

Tonight I had one nearly escape from solitary. He'd have made it if he hadn't punched an officer so hard continuously that he found himself in the opposite cell. I managed to get the door locked on him before he could make off with the baton and keys. He stood there like a deer in headlights until others could come along and subdue him.

Later I had an Ex-Cop Snitch and a Cop Killer together in the same room. They ignored each other, but later a group of five or six guards killed the Cop Killer when I wasn't looking. Never even got the blue alert that pops up whenever guards are in trouble. I fired them all, for all the good it did.

We need to get a notification whenever a guard does something. I keep hearing tazers go off, but almost never find where.

This new version added a few challenges to creating a perfect prison but I feel I achieved my goals.

The one new issue was food which I addressed by sending to them to canteen, only a few feet away. I feel I could do a thousand prisoners but building these kind of prisons is boring.

The Legendary prisoners are only good for getting killed and starting incredibly short riots. No matter what problem it's all solved by large amounts of armed guards.

I think for my next prison I'll build one with the least amount of guards possible.

I had a prison filled with armed guards. I think I had 40 or 50 of them, it was insane. They keep the prisoners suppressed though, and that makes them perform worse in classes and workshop, so it wasn't that good. That prison went to the shitter too due to a fire.

I now have a model that's all about giving the prisoners everything to satisfy their needs instantly, like toilets in the showers and telephones in the canteen. They are incredibly peaceful and I can make them work 6 hours a day and they danger meter never goes past Low.

Obviously what we need is a new object which is a toilet with a showerhead over it, a videophone/television in front of it, an IV stand full of methadone next to it, and some sort of intubation feeding device for shoveling porridge into your prisoner.

Comes with restraints, obviously.

Almost but I have two 2 hour blocks for eating. I only do so because prisoners have to be fed and note the canteen is next to the pen. I also had an infirmary because the goal is to keep them alive while putting them in the worst environment possible and earning as much as I can. Basically just testing how much I can get away with in terms of bad prison management. As mentioned with armed guards it's possible to make the worst hellhole and the prison works great.

Personally what I'd like to see is some kind prison oversight/inspection committee that would shut down horribly abusive prisons. You should be forced to provide basic rights. Running a 3rd world gulag like I did shouldn't work. I guess a federal prison inspector should come every 7 days on a random basis.
