I just want to say that my favorite part of Gamergate is that they've proven, over the last couple days, that they can't really figure out Twitter. They especially have trouble with bots.

It's pretty common for them to claim that #StopGamerGate2014 is solely trending because of bots (completely missing, or possibly ignoring, the fact that bots scrape trending topics all the time), but I think my favorite part is that they're constantly getting into arguments with ur-chatbot Eliza.

The gamergate thing is mystifying. Some dude went nuclear last night on imgur over Polygon's review of Bayonetta 2 which mentioned how the T&A was distracting. Like, the imgur guy wasn't offended that the game is constantly sexualizing Bayonetta, he was upset that the Polygon dude mentioned it at all because, apparently, if a game gets a not-great score on Metacritic, the studio might close down or something? :psyduck:

The entire problem is that these people don't get that reviews are opinions about the game, and they want their game reviews to be "objective", which is the most ridiculous loving idea I've heard this past month.

The Gamergate party line on that is that a review should only ever focus on the actual game, and not on the message, concepts and ideas behind it. So it's out of line for Polygon to have given Bayonetta 2 a bit of flak for the fact it's very, very sexualized, because a review of Bayonetta 2 should only ever focus on the gameplay, graphics and sound quality.

It's more of a concern for Platinum than it might be for other studios, because they have a history of making technically solid games that just don't do very well in terms of sales; as Clover, they make Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and God Hand, all of which were incredible games that basically bombed. After Capcom cut them loose, they turned into Platinum and made Mad World, Bayonetta, Vanquish, Metal Gear Rising, and Wonderful 101, most of which are incredible games that bombed.

Bayonetta 2 is in particular kind of a wonder child, because the original game was boatloads of fun to play (although yeah, it was full of T&A) and naturally sold like crap. The only reason it got a sequel is because Nintendo put up all the money for it to get an exclusive on the Wii U; the end result is that you have a sequel nobody expected for a game lots of people love, on a platform that basically nobody owns. So naturally it's probably going to sell like crap and Platinum could desperately use a hit.

That's all to provide context for why somebody might be worried that the studio would close if Bayonetta 2 doesn't sell well; in no way does it justify going ballistic on somebody for daring to mention that Bayonetta is incredibly sexualized because the character is basically nothing but tits on legs who occasionally gets naked. I haven't read the polygon review but you could basically describe Bayonetta as softcore porn and you'd be right.

Yeah, and I tried to explain that to the dude, and even provided the helpful tip of "find a critic whose opinions you agree with and don't worry about the people whose opinions you think are garbage" and the dude just kept on about "fighting" the "unethical" insertion of "ideology" into what should be "objective" articles.

Then he mentioned imgur is full of beta bluepillers because all his comments were being downvoted into oblivion. They don't even show up on the gallery post anymore, so I can't screencap the conversations :allears:

Best part about gamer views on game reviews is going through user reviews on steam/metacritic/etc. Every game is either a perfect 10/10 or the worst game ever 0/10.

Tell that to Obsidian. It sounds like publishers are encouraging medium-sized development studios to choose between "paltry bonus now" and "worthwile bonus later... IF you get above <fill in score here; in Fallout New Vegas's case the target was 85 and it clocked an 84> on Metacritic." So yeah, if a game gets a not-great score on Metacritic, depending on how predatory your publisher's deal was, studios closing down is actually a possibility.

Of course, smaller studios tend to self-publish (and if developed in-house, obviously they aren't going to put a rock-and-a-hard-place deal on their private studio), meaning that Metacritic scores are all but meaningless except for to a very specific type of consumer, so I know you're being a little sarcastic, but you're definitely right in cases where Metacritic isn't used as a goalpost incentive to screw developers.

Unfortunately there have definitely been cases where publishers gate how much they'll pay developers behind Metacritic review marks. Of course, if you get mad at anyone in that situation it should be the publishers, not the poor schmucks writing reviews.

Saying that you shouldn't give a game a bad review because it might deny the studio money and lose people jobs is like saying that you shouldn't avoid lovely restaurants for the same reason. In a way it's a nice sentiment but if you think about it for more than five seconds it just doesn't makes sense on any logical level.

But remember, video games are art and should be seen as high art. It's just art where you can't look at message or delivery and just on functionality. I want to see a similar "movement" for actual art. "The painting is pretty big but not unwieldy, but sadly not much can be said for the colors which the creator could have used more of given the asking price, and the frame is fairly sparse. The funny part is they want a "pure" videogame journalism, you know, like back in... never. Literally since the inception of the concept it has been people given free games by companies who then pay them to write good reviews about them. Some publishers literally won't give out games to reviewers unless they sign a contract saying they'll say nothing but good about it (or at least never ever ever mention a single negative).

But let's ignore that basic fact of the industry! All game journalism should be 100% unbiased, objective, and ignoring anything that might possibly hurt the manbabies' feelers!

Unrelated: How the gently caress are people able to publicly buy and sell food stamp benefits using Facebook? I don't mean via private messages--I'm talking about typing "Selling Link (Illinois's food stamp program)" as their status, which is visible to everyone, and then hashing out a deal with any takers, right there in plain sight.
