It wasn't until fairly recently that we decided than a god should be above Human frailties; hell you just have to look at the various ancient pantheons like the Greek one to see that people tended to think of gods as "Extremely emotional Humans with unfathomable powers and a willingness to use them." I mean christ, one of the major legends about how Medusa happened is that she fled to Athena's temple when a man tried to rape her, the man caught her anyway and raped her in front of the statue of Athena, Athena being the goddess of wisdom decided that the appropriate reaction was to blame the woman for being raped in her temple and turn her into a hideous snakebeast that was so ugly people who saw her face literally turned to stone. What the gently caress Athena? You want petty, go check out the Old Testament, OT God was a gigantic rear end in a top hat who could throw lightning and was treated by his worshippers as such.

Which honestly just makes a lot of sense. The Greeks and other ancient cultures never had to struggle with rationalizing ideas of free will or the problem of evil. Their gods were dicks and they knew it.

If there's anything I learned about Greek gods it's that they're a bunch of manchildren with powers way beyond their maturity.

"The gods are petty emotional shitbags" was a pretty solid explanation until we worked out that the real reason was because there are in fact no gods to begin with.

Almost all old gods are manchildren with powers way beyond their maturity, it's not limited to the Greek or Norse gods. Hell even the goddamn Dreamtime spirits from Australia were frequently petty shitheads. Gods that aren't petty shitheads are the exception, not the rule.

That being said, I've said all sorts of lovely things about God (as have tons of my friends, innumerable people on the internet, and plenty of famous people) and I'm still kicking. It's playing off confirmation bias.

Like isn't this a major reason why Christianity took off the way it did? In a world of shithead manchildren gods and greedy Roman bureaucrats, there's this alright dude talking about a God who loves you individually and whose followers have an almost socialist support network. If I were a working class pagan in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, I'd convert to that.

If you try explaining these things they stick their heads in the sand and just say "you're different," and usually talk about how they bootstrapped their way to college in the 80s by joining the army, because the army will take everyone Basically they can never admit that social programs are any good because of mythological welfare queens.

I was watching the breaking news on the Kennedy Assassination, and I guess Cronkite was describing whack job conservatives protesting JFK? I guess they were pissed about the US being in the UN, and hit him with picket signs. Amazing how "Not My President"!-types existed all the way back then. But yeah, this would be worth bringing up the next time any right-winger brings up the fact that "Kennedy was a conservative". I know those pop up from time to time. e: Holy poo poo, a retro Gold Mine! quote:“We need a man on horseback to lead this nation,” Dealey said, “and many people in Texas and the Southwest think that you are riding Caroline’s tricycle.” http://www.dallasnews.com/news/jfk50/reflect/20131012-extremists-in-dallas-created-volatile-atmosphere-before-jfks-1963-visit.ece FuzzySkinner fucked around with this message at 02:18 on Oct 19, 2014 |
