Ahh nostalgia, you cruel bitch
So I'm finally playing 13 for the first time and the cutscene overload just hit rock bottom.

Somewhere in chapter 8 I'm running alone down a corridor as Sazh immediately after leaving a cutscene, walk into a room, and bam another cutscene. The cutscene is literally nothing but him walking straight through the room, then you regain control in the corridor on the other side. Nothing else happens, he just walks through a random room via cutscene.

Yuna's design is supposed to be like Yuna's rebel phase, so she imitated Tidus. It looks silly, but at least there's a logic to it.

I just meant character-wise. Anything other than Vivi-Steiner-Zidane-Garnet is a travesty. Eiko gets Holy and has Double White as a trance over Garnet's Eidolon, but I've never found myself really wishing I had Eiko over Garnet.

Her entire plot exists for like two scenes, so at least it's not annoying.

On that note, was FF9 rushed to get released? I mean, the game still ended up being fantastic but Amarant and Freya's characters kind of went nowhere and it feels like more was planned for them. Were they originally going to have more stuff to do or were they just made because they needed a dragoon and a monk?

Well, to be fair to Freya, there was also the invasion and decimation of her home, and then what few remained of her people fleeting to Cleyra.
...where nearly all of them were blown up. So add genocide to her list of issues.

So yeah, she had a lot going for her in terms of interest and motivation. Shame she completely drops out of the story after this and we don't get to see how she was coping.

FFIX features like, three or four cases of genocide. X-2 has genocide too. That was one of the subplots I liked. If you don't do anything, the Ronso massacre the Guado. If you do something, you save them. It makes you feel important in a more personal way than just saving the world.

Finished the game. Chapter 13 is possibly the worst last part of any video game I have ever played, and I played Bravely Default's true ending path right before this.

Holy gently caress, where do I start.

-Everyone mentions Cid being useless, post-death. I didn't realize he did not even survive two cutscenes before he was killed by his Lt.

-Speaking of which, what the gently caress was the point of that whole Calvary subplot. They ain't poo poo going to remotely reach Orphan, and they were turned into Cieth anyway.

-The whole premise of a boss basically writing the entire game to the very end is so stupid. It's like some dumb meta plot about why the game was on rails, except uniroincally.

-If the entire loving point of the game is to join Orphan and get killed, why the gently caress are you fighting so much? Why the gently caress are you awakening Ragnorak, then putting up your unbreakable shield? Multiple times?!

-The final dungeon is the most tedious thing I have played. Completely non-nonsensical even for FF, and designed in a way to just be random and fillerish.

-Did I mention the entire chapter 13 was useless? Because oh there's Rosch again that was also pointless. Again, why the gently caress is he alive. He served no purpose in the end.

-The entire scene between the 2nd and final boss forms of Orphan was pointless, unless you love torture porn.

-They made two more games after this. gently caress, now I finally get the hate. I honestly don't hate Lightning, but now I do by association with that entire shitfest last chapter.

Generally XIII-2 is considered a mechanical improvement on XIII. LR uses a pretty different system and while I like it way more, with the exception of things like 'stagger exists' it's distinct enough that I don't know that liking XIII's system will be very relevant one way or the other.

Orphan's Cradle was indeed a horrible dungeon and ruined my liking for XIII. it's weird, I hated Pulse, I hated Orphan's Cradle, but I loved the part in-between. Eden Under Siege was probably my favorite segment of XIII. Then Chapter 13 happened and I just stopped ever considering replaying the game.

I do enjoy the concept of the fal'Cie. It's just that it wasn't executed well. The way they are first presented as the robo-gods with humans their helpless slaves but then you learn that they are the true slaves. Bigger slaves than humans can ever be. Humans can at least die and be free of their Focus or whatever other bondage they're in. The fal'Cie though? They're stuck in their "roles" for eternity. Look at Orphan for example - it was created solely to be murdered. What a lousy existence that was.

It's why I think Lindzei should have just been the final boss of the XIII Trilogy or whatever. It's his fault that all of XIII happened.

Yeah you mention Raines, Rosch, the Cavalry, etc etc. as being pointless. One of the worst things about the game is how utterly meaningless all the supporting characters are. Basically you have the 6 playable characters, Serah, Sazh's son, Hope's dad, and... a bunch of white noise. It's really poorly written and executed.

And if that plot made you unhappy, maybe you should skip XIII-2. Overexposure to Caius levels of melodrama may be hazardous to your health.

So take a turn or two to reapply them, at the very least you want haste on yourself and imperil on him. Also when he does his big telegraphed attack that I forget the name of, don't bring out the sentinels like you probably want to. The trick is that if you do enough damage while it's charging you'll stun him, it'll go off early and do much less damage.

I don't remember his Chapter 11 fight being too hard. I had more trouble with the first one. That and Orphan are the only bosses I recall giving me a lot of trouble. That is, until I looked it up and found that the final boss of the game was loving vulnerable to Poison. I never would have guessed that. Before I looked it up, he wrecked me something fierce and I could barely do any damage. But then I used Poison and suddenly I didn't even need to do damage. Snow did some attacks maybe but not much.

I actually think Nomura made an outfit with as much weird poo poo as possible so that he could see if they'd be able to model it in-game properly. Yes, I'm completely serious. Also, I think that Nomura seems to enjoy the challenge of making absurdly complicated characters with tiny details all over the place.

I agree with most of this and it's why I think the game falls apart once you get to Gran Pulse. You may not think so while you're playing the Gran Pulse section because it at first seems innocuous, but when taken into context with the end of the game it becomes obvious why it's the start of the free fall. The story up to that part is much more well defined and you can sympathize with the characters. I'm not saying that you will sympathize with them, but that it's at least possible. The goals of the characters make a bit of sense, and you're never wondering "why exactly am I doing this?" Most of the time, you're just running for your life, but when the characters do gain a bit of agency they focus their ire on Sanctum, the group who had been trying to kill them up to that point, which makes sense.

But after the first stint in Cocoon? Wandering around Pulse for hours trying to I guess try to get rid of your brands or something? And then the crew goes back to Cocoon to save Cocoon but how? Nobody ever says "this is how we're going to save Cocoon". Somebody says something like "We'll make them listen to us!" which is seriously lame and what does that even matter? And then at the end, Orphan shows up and everyone is all like "well I guess since he's here now we gotta kill him and by extension kill everyone on Cocoon." Because nobody could've known that Fang/Vanille would end up saving Cocoon by becoming the crystal pillar.

Edit: actually FFXIII-2 has a story that's a lot better communicated and makes a lot more sense in the end. It's also full of stupid poo poo but it's not the kind of stupid poo poo where it leaves you going "...what?" but the kind of stupid poo poo where it leaves you going "oh, I guess."

Like Nanomachines in MGS.
