Romney ran a (largely) competent campaign in 2012 and some of the areas where he had trouble, particularly in foreign policy, are places where public opinion in the US has since flipped in his favor. I wouldn't be so confident about running against him in 2016, though we can't know what the geopolitical scene will look like two years from now.

If you're the Democrats, the most favorable matchups are the people who aren't going to win the primary. Your Ben Carsons, Newt Gingrichs, and Rick Santorums. Paul and Cruz are trickier.

I don't see much opportunity to co-opt a single-issue voting block quite as large as the entire southeastern united states, this time around.

That said, I think Mitt could do aight if he accomplished two things:

1) avoid terrible gaffes (the electorate has a short memory and I don't know that his gaffes from last time would kill him, regardless of how many times the democrats brought them back up)

2) find some way to stick to his centrist guns and run the way he ran in his statewide campaigns. Probably pry loose a nontrivial number of (white) democratic voters in colorado, new hampshire and the southern swing-states.

These both seem pretty far-fetched by this point, and I don't think he will run considering that he purportedly had to be dragooned into it last time around.

I understand that, yeah, but he wasn't even making a birther argument, was the annoying thing. He was saying that yes, Obama was born in the US and was qualified to be president, but if he hadn't been then according to section G of that law, he wouldn't be a citizen by birth because his mother had only lived in the US for a year after her 14th birthday at the time of Obama's birth and his father wasn't a citizen.

This is probably getting to be a derail, though; I should probably just drop it and ignore the guy, since it's a pointless hypothetical anyway.

Sounds like your friend hates Obama. Talk to him about it.

Who do the democrats want running on the GOP side? I'd imagine the best (aka worst) runner would be Rand or Cruz, but Romneys gotta be high up on the list too.

Rand Paul would be the best. He's a man who has a few "concerns" about the civil rights act, aid to Israel, and he thinks maybe the security state or defense budget shouldn't be so bloated. They can call him a racist/anti-semite and combo it with him being soft on defense/crime. Rand Paul thinking we shouldn't be imprisoning so many black men could be a CO-CO-CO-COMBOBREAKER, though.

“Go win the Heimlich Trophy!”

Honestly, this is a case where he's trapped between two races. Publicly saying gently caress Obamacare in Ohio isn't the greatest idea since the medicaid expansion is a thing, and our premiums dropped some. At the same time, he has to be able to point to that tweet if he decides he wants to run. Honestly, I'll be surprised if he does at this point--he has a literal stranglehold on Columbus at this point and can do whatever he wants which generally means "more money for me. gently caress you". He's too Boehner-esque to want the presidency--no way he wants to try to wrangle the tea party or deal with that when that's his most similar comparison for work ethic.

Good to see people are still angry over a 1991 opera

EDIT: Giuliani's statement is quoted in the page and practically begs for a quote shoutout on its own:

"Equally, all of us have as strong a First Amendment right to ... warn people that this work is both a distortion of history and helped, in some ways, to foster a three decade long feckless policy of creating a moral equivalency between the Palestinian Authority, a corrupt terrorist organization, and the state of Israel, a democracy ruled by law."

Yeah. Rudy's going to run in 2016 when he'll be 72, 9/11 will be 15 years old, and his messy personal life will be brought out to the forefront. Beyond just being a moderate North-Eastern Republican, Rudy is also a really unlikable guy who doesn't play well outside of New York and when the words 9/11 aren't nearby.

Buy hey, he spoke out against an opera! So Rudy in 2016!

I doubt it would have a serious effect. She could get some more leftist arguments into the discourse and get attention, both of which could be good things, but she won't have the mainstream support that Obama used to upset Hillarymentum in '08.

Nothing is going to approximate or top the Obama vs. Hillary primary season, that's for sure.

I don't think Warren should run because she's fine where she is for now. I've heard she's not the socialist some activists believe her to be so if she ran and won the primary, I'd expect her to end up as another moderate Democrat in the general/White House. Nobody's the socialist anyone believes they are.

Eugene Debs hated Milwaukee Socialists because they engaged in deal-making/horse-trading/whatever to arrange the political support for all those public works projects.
