I wonder if Donkey Kong Country wouldn't be better served with a deaths counter instead of a lives counter. I can get 99 lives no problem, and then waste fourteen or so on a tricky spot before climbing back up to 99.

Lives are pointless for any game not in an arcade.

Just one more thing!
It's especially silly since the game autosaves after every level. NSMBU gives you plenty of lives but if you do run out you have to start over from the last checkpoint on the world you're in. Granted, that's still kind of pointless because it's really easy to have tons of lives in that game.

This isn't 100% true but they really depend on the game. Spelunky, where you can get exactly one extra life and it is designed to be replayed frequently, is a good example. Mario on the other hand could replace lives and nobody would notice except for the lack of the iconic green mushroom.

Its more than an icon. They would need to replace it with something else that is common and "rewarding" for doing the usual stuff that leads to discovering a green mushroom. I am sure it can be done.

Don't even loving get me started on how pointless the live system is in modern games.

A death counter would be pretty funny. I'd want an overall and one per level so I can see how many times I died to that bullshit temple level in the volcano.

I want to see a death counter associated with pointless shiny stars on your profile, so like if you die 10 times in the game, you only get 4 shiny stars. Die 40 times, you get 3 and so on. The OCD it'd trigger here would be amazing.

Like the shiny stars you (don't) get if you trigger certain things in Mario games, such as merely seeing the super guide in Mario 3D Land? I remember when that happened, and it did trigger a lot of OCD in these forums.

Finally cracked on my day off and bought a Wii U to commemorate Smash Bros. being a month away. It's dope.

Walmart's site lies because they didn't have the Mario Kart 8 bundle, so I ended up with the Mario 3D World one and picked up Mario Kart 8 (along with Wind Waker HD!) separately. Didn't particularly want 3D World, but I have it now and I liked Galaxy 2 -- what should I expect?

Expect greatness. The first world is pretty simple--the game is fairly easy for the first few worlds, but the challenges are interesting and fresh, and when the game starts to show its fangs, it bites down loving hard. Try out all four of the characters, and just have fun. It's basically the closest to the classic Mario format in 3-D the series has gotten. It's a bit different from Galaxy 2, but there are a few...nods...to that line of games.

3D World owns. It's not quite as creative as the Galaxy games, or as long, but it's much tighter and overall more fun and also uhh co-op 3D Mario

3d world is great. If you liked Galaxy you'll like this. It's engaging and fun and pretty much every level has a new gimmick without feeling forced. Plus both the visuals and the music are outstanding. And it's probably the best multiplayer Mario ever. My girlfriend and I are almost done with it, it's her first game ever. When she said "I love this, are there any other games like this?" I was very sad to have to reply "... No... :smith: "

That bundle comes with nintendoland too, doesn't it? That's surprisingly fun to play with other people.

NTSC and PAL didn't become compatible after the introduction of 720p and 1080p they still ran at different frame rates. I wasn't aware that tvs have become compatible since, I have a european tv and it says nowhere on it anything about NTSC.

You guys telling me if I plug an NTSC device into this thing it will work?

Aww... :( Well, if she liked 3D World, maybe she'd like Rayman? It's also a fun, charming platformer with a great aesthetic and pretty rad music! She could even be Murphy if she has trouble.

Looper

You could try New Super Mario U. The character selection is meaningless and it's 2D, but it's still really fun with friends and much better than the rest of its series.

Kind of a step down after 3D World, though :(

e: I'm dumb and forgetful, Rayman's an even better co-op platformer!

Ailumao

Rayman Legends is probably better than 3D world for co-op since a lot of the stuff with Murphy is inventive and interesting.

Also those music levels in Rayman Legends are way better than they have any right to be.

Neither of the Galaxy games are true multiplayer, but both of them incorporate a lot of the same level design and game design concepts that are present in 3D World. If someone asked me for a game "like" 3D World, I'd say the Galaxy games without any hesitation, since, as far as Mario games go, they're pretty darn similar. I would certainly not recommend a straight 2D platformer off the bat to someone who just played and enjoyed a mostly 3D platformer, so Galaxy 2 would be your best bet, since it's got that similar "mix" that 3D World has.

Unless, of course, you actually wanted a co-op 3D platformer, specifically, then you're almost entirely SoL. I distinctly remember hearing of a cooperative 3D platformer either being in the works or having been released, but I cannot find any details on it whatsoever. Ah well. If what really caught her attention was the co-op itself, then I'd say that the previous posts have the right idea.

I think that depends on who you play with. The only time I've ever played DKCR in co-op was with a friend of mine, ages ago, and she was more than able to keep up, and we both had good fun as a result. I'll admit it's less "co-op" and more "playing the game at the same time," though.

Thanks for the suggestions, I didn't realize Rayman had coop. But yeah I think 2d platforming is gonna be less smooth, it seems like it'd be more frustrating for the person who's trying to keep up, and we'd get in each other's way a lot. I'll keep my fingers crossed though and try to stealth-record her reaction if there's ever a Super Mario 3D World 2 announcement.

One of Tingle's gimmicks in his own games is that he can barely fight and has to hire bodyguards to escort him through dungeons, I wonder if they'll work that in somehow.

I imported it from Europe, and I never got around to beating it. I stopped playing around the time I had to escort the wimpy jungle man. I found it kind of weird and lame that there was hardly any music in the game at all, at least in the overworld. I never really had any idea of how many rupees I needed to get someone to talk, and I didn't want to waste a bunch, so I just felt the need to look up the correct prices for things online. I really wanted to like it, and it has good ideas, but it's just not very polished.
