I get that people will pay to get something early, but this is people paying $50-200 for an invite when there are buy it now auctions listed right there for <$10.

Because if this is anything like the invite system for G+, it'll take MONTHS for invites to reach every single person who asked for one from Google.

...Except that's not the case at all and it's more like the invite system for sending money in Gmail because you can have someone else invite you and then you can invite others.

For the first 24 hours though, everyone basically gave their e-mail to everyone else online just to get an invite. There was a Googler on Twitter giving them out randomly to anyone who asked, Reddit had two threads going that just gave out invites, and Android Police got spammed with hundreds of comments containing e-mail addresses just to get an invite.

People on Reddit actually started to subscribe others to hosed up porn websites after a while. :v:

Alternative Reason: People are insane and want "the next big thing". Same reason why iPhones, Galaxy devices, and new OS updates for iOS and Android are so popular for the first few days. Except the next version of Windows. Everyone seems to steer clear of that.
That's crazy how G+ is pretty much a failure but when it was new invites were selling for crazy money.

I wouldn't call G+ a failure. Sure, it's not as popular as Facebook, but it still has a lot of active users.

Yea, video game codes always pull $10-20 for the beta/alpha access

It was a legitimate question. I don't use it and don't know anyone who does, so I have no idea how it's doing. I'd read somewhere that it was mostly Youtube-related so I was asking because I thought you guys would know.

I use it and like it but it's definitely not what Google wanted it to be. It's not a draw to outsiders but it's great if you were already in the tank for Google. Of course if you were already in the tank, they likely don't need your data.

It's basically good for nerdy and some other interests, since you can follow interesting people on a bunch of topics, but it probably not going to have your weird uncle.
Which does have the accidental advantage that you are reading interesting stuff and not the sorts of things a weird uncle would post.

This is exactly right.

Whereas I've got lots of friends and family on FB, it's really a chore to read what they're interested in posting. The opposite happens on G+, 99% of people in my circles on G+ are people I don't know but post things I'm interested in reading.

And that's OK. G+ doesn't have to have the insane user numbers that FB has, it just has to have the right users for me. Of course, its not what Google wanted out of it, but it is what it is, and its certainly a site I visit at least once a day.

Sundar Pichai is now in control of most of Google's lead products thanks to a promotion from Larry Page. This includes Google Search, Maps, Google+, commerce, research, ads, and infrastructure. Pichai already controlled Chrome and Android before this.

Yeah, that doesn't seem like a disadvantage. I deleted my Facebook account because I just couldn't stand my family posting horrible racist poo poo and Jesus/Bible stuff all the time.

I like Google+ well enough as a social network, but none of my friends use it (same for Hangouts -- I love it, no one I know wants anything to do with it). I think that (again) it was just Google being idiots about advertising it, and then the whole trying to force people to use it thing, really. If they'd done things differently it might've worked out better. Oh well.

Anyway, looks like the T-Mobile z3 has a locked bootloader: http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/10/23/confirmed-xperia-z3-for-t-mobile-us-has-a-locked-bootloader/

Is there any problem with buying a new N5 on Amazon instead of direct from Google Play? I've got Prime shipping so even the slight increase in price is fine to me because I'll get it right away (and both Amazon and Google charge sales tax in my state so I've got that either way).

Welp, I got it from Google and paid the extra $4 for 2 day shipping, I may get it a day or two later, but I think it actually comes out a few bucks cheaper, and I'll be sure to get support from Google.

I wish I could tell you 100% that a Nexus 5 through Amazon get's Google Support or not but I have no clue. Given the choice I'd do the same thing to be sure and buy direct from Google.

Just looking for a little advice.

My brother lives in England, and me and my dad are going halfsies on a present for him. He wants a samsung android phone, and that's all he specified.

It would have to be a factory unlocked international version, I'm not even really sure how to go about purchasing that to be honest. I see that there are unlocked options on amazon though.

What do you guys recommend from samsung? I personally have a droid maxx and love it, but I know nothing about other droids. He has two kids who are old enough to be playing games but they have their own droids, and my brother is a gamer, so probably looking for a newer model that can handle better games.

edit: So I'm seeing the galaxy S5 is the newest model, is that a recommended phone for someone whos dead set on samsung?

I work with a dude who is all about Samsung. He came in the other day and showed us the killer feature of the note 3: you can draw a rectangle with the stylus and then launch the calculator inside it. I'm guessing other things too? It seemed like the lamest thing ever but dude was super excited.

I'm assuming he does "top ups" which when I lived there with him were prepaid dealies that you load into your phone, no service required... though that was 10+ years ago. I'm probably mis-remembering. He just specified unlocked, but asking him is probably a good idea thanks.

I'd doubt it. Anyone who'd want a Samsung can get one subsidized for $600 cheaper through their carrier and anyone who cares about GPE software is going to avoid a Samsung. I'd be surprised if they sold 100 of those.

Note 4 is way better than S5 if he doesn't mind the extra size. Also I'm not sure if international Samsungs (in the way that you mean) are all Exynos or some of them are Snapdragon, Snapdragon is better.
