Not sure if Hendrix qualifies as prog rock but there was a good 90 min documentary on the BBC: Jimi Hendrix: Here My Train a-Comin'. It should be on iPlayer (for British goons only, sadly) for 7 days (or is it 30 days now?). Perhaps it is already well known but thought to mention it here. Interesting that it interviewed Buddy Cox and Buddy Miles, who often get passed over.

I'm listening to the Genesis remastered albums now and I have noticed all sorts of things in them for the first time. I am convinced that extra parts have been added to the originals. I can list some of the stuff that seems new if you like. Do any of you know if extra material was added to tracks as well as enhancing stuff that was already there? By the way, any thoughts on Jeff Wayne's changes to War of the Worlds in the remastered version of 10 or so years ago?

Time Table 7:23 3. Get 'Em Out by Friday 12:10 4. Can-Utility and the Coastliners 20:45 5. Horizons 26:30 6. Supper's Ready 28:12 My previous experience is with vinyl from the 1980/90s and non-remastered CDs of 1990-2010s. I listened to these on fairly decent systems and I am listening to the Youtube on laptop speakers so it could be that some differences come from that. I am working from memory because all my vinyl and CDs are in storage so I can’t do any actual comparison. Overall the mix sounds a lot brighter (treble enhanced), clearer and with lead vocals more “forward”. (Watcher of the Skies: vocals a lot clearer, hearing more echo on the drums, cymbals crisper) (Time Table: more echo on piano/keyboard) 10:10 mellotron and flute sound new to me (Get ‘em Out By Friday: organ seems more subdued, drums punchier) 18:30-19:00 pub background noise is definitely much louder 20:40 PG’s vocals diminish then rise in volume at this point, didn’t the original just diminish? 21:45 added triangle? 24:20-24:30 acoustic guitar – never heard that before 26:12 flute new? 28:45-29:50 hello cello 30:10 PG: “listen to this” (?) presumably that was there before but never could discern the words before 31:40 flute either new or –more likely – enhanced 32:57 enhanced synthesised echo 33:45 children’s choir louder 34:11 cymbal new? 40:20 new effects on vocals? 48:30 chimes much clearer 50:30 were electric guitars doubletracked previously? Apologies to non-Genesis fans itt!

The new Kayo Dot album, Coffins on Io is smooth as all hell. Much less "metal" than their last couple of releases, but it's better for it. I've not heard proggy or avant-garde rock music that's created an atmosphere quite like this for some time (I hate the soulless guitar-wankery bands). Highly recommended.

All that being said, a lot of the time I don't have the luxery of listening to music in a silent room, or on high quality headphones, so in that case, the new remixes are the ideal choice. As nitpicky as we soundphiles can be about compression and the loudness war, when you're listening to music in your car, having those kickass loud compressed remixes do sound great in a high noise environment. The Genesis compilation I put together for my friends used the latest remixes since I knew they were probably not going to listen to it on a high quality system.

Anyone ever listen to any of Dan Britton's projects like Deluge Grander or Birds and Buildings? I just picked up August in the Urals and it's seriously a gem, 70 minutes of epic Zeuhl-ish prog with hardly a dull moment. Sadly the prog circle is so tightly knit nowadays that you have to discover a dude like this by chance, but IMO this has got to be one of the best prog albums of the last 10 years, and listening to his other stuff on YouTube it seems like most of his work is just as good.

Heaven & Earth is a really good album though, probably because he helped write it for his own vocal range and not Anderson's.

So, I posted about them in the free MP3 thread a few months back, but iamthemorning are now signed to Kscope records and have released their second album, Belighted. For any of you who are interested, they're a progressive rock group which focus more on classical piano playing and female-led vocals. Also, Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree, King Crimson) is the drummer on this album. Signed copies of the album are available for $16 USD, and the album can be listened to for free on the bandcamp page I linked. Oh, and Devin Townsend released a single the other day to mark the upcoming release of Z2 (the sequel to his album Ziltoid the Omniscient). It can be found right here.

Genesis is one of those bands that rewards you the more you listen to them. I had pretty much known about Genesis for as long as I could remember since I was a little kid in the 80s and they were pretty popular then, but I didn't discover Gabriel era Genesis until I was in high school. I remember not liking them that much at first, a little too weird and awkward for me. I did like The Musical Box a lot though, and Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, and the opening to Watcher of the Skies were also great from the get go. But everything else took time for me to really appreciate. But it really paid off. Now they're my favorite band. Well, them and Phish.

Genesis is probably my favourite band too (although King Crimson is a close contender)...I just love their sense of melody. There's melodies in everything they do and the melodies themselves are catchy without being lame. They really have a way of keeping the ear interested.

I originally thought of Genesis as "the band with the ugly muppets" because my first exposure to them was the Land of Confusion video which came out when I was like 9 years old. But I didn't intentionally listen to them until I was 14 or 15 or so when I discovered progressive rock and was surprised to find that they had been part of it, and that Peter Gabriel had once been their singer (I had liked a few of his solo songs as a kid because of his creative videos, but didn't know the connection). Most of my prog discovery was through the free MP3s that ProgArchive hosted (hosts?) so any time I would see a band I was even remotely familiar with or was highly rated, I'd download their three or four songs and burn them on a CD-R and my poor mom would be forced to listen to La Villa Strangiato or whatever. The first "real" Genesis song I listened to was The Knife, which I thought was dope as gently caress, and then Supper's Ready, which blew my mind. Also I watched that Genesis documentary, Tony Banks is a huge wang

My dad had a tape dub of the fourth disc of the Frame By Frame boxset (1981-84) and just played that in the car ALL the TIME. I thought Fripp mouse-solo in "Elephant Talk" was the funniest thing for years.

Actually, since we're on the Genesis train, my girlfriend's father HATES Genesis/Peter Gabriel. I'm not really sure what it is, except I think he was just too old or not interested in prog when it came to the states, and was just really against anything with production values in the 80s (he also really hates U2, but to be fair I think the only thing he's heard is stuff of Joshua Tree) I get a real kick out of listening to Genesis while doing work for them. I told him how I did a bunch of house painting to "Selling England By The Pound" and he nearly had a conniption fit. If I tell him I did some light carpentry to Foxtrot it might just send him over the edge. I don't even play it publicly, it's just on headphones and he STILL gets upset. If I told him how much yardwork I've done to Tales Of Topographic Oceans I'd be a dead man.

I saw the 2008 show, and it was like a limp version of the 1995 Thrak show (still great, and my seat allowed me to see Fripp hiding behind his amp the entire time, and smiling!) But the Sept 20 show was just a revelation. I have a feeling they will do what they always do: film it live in Japan next year and release that. 4 of the five concert dvds I have of them are from Japan, the other from Shepards Bush in London. At the 1995 show, they had been together touring and recording for over a year with the double trio. 2008 was a bit rough, but this one would have to be my ideal KC lineup since I was a baby when they broke up in the seventies. And I absolutely want a new album. The song left off of the tour box from the Jackzyc/Collins/Fripp Projekct sounded like vintage Crimson rather than the laid back stuff on the album release. Now just waiting for Relayer in 5.1, and nervous as hell about The Endless River. Its about time Genesis got some decent Blu Ray audio releases out. I'll buy up through Wind and Wuthering and be happy. And kudos to who brought up Hendrix. I love the radio promos that they play on the documentary: The world's biggest progressive rock band!" Progressive, not prog.

It's not REALLY prog, but Daniel Lanois' new album "Flesh and Machine" is really, really loving good. Total headphone album. In some respects I kinda wish it was more of what Eno's "Small Craft on a Milk Sea" was doing. Edit: man, I mangled that last sentence.
