I like how there was attention paid to even the crafting mechanics, which in most games (Atelier excluded) amount to pressing "Confirm" on a menu (same with the harvesting mechanics). I like that there are a dozen classes, each with a bunch of skills, and the majority of them are non-combat-related. I like the dialogue, which is cheesy but obviously had a lot of love put into them. So is that game basically Final Fantasy x Animal Crossing?

Another little thing from Dead Space 3: There are a whole slew of extra difficulties you get for beating the game, and one of them is called 'Classic' mode, which strips out the gun crafting and co-op and forces you to only use weapons from previous Dead Space games. It's a pretty cool challenge that proves that once again you can beat the whole drat thing with only the plasma cutter, but that's beside the point. The little thing is that, about halfway through the game, you get your hands on a Probe Gun which you have to use inside of a giant necromorph to do plot stuff. Usually this thing is a loving awesome and very formidable weapon even if it's only temporarily until you do the necromorph thing, but since it's not a previous Dead Space game weapon, in Classic mode they nerf its damage to a single lonely block (compared to the plasma cutter's default 15) so that it's absolutely useless against anything in combat.

The Moon Monster posted:So is that game basically Final Fantasy x Animal Crossing? Like Mokinokaro said, you don't end up modifying too much except the furnishings in your home, which I don't particularly care about. I'm really drawing a blank on what other games to compare it to (other than Disney's Magic World which is apparently quite similar). There are a dozen classes, but four of them are combat oriented (two melee, one ranged, one magical), there are three classes that allow you to gain resources, like wood and fish, and five classes that allow you to craft various things. The classes work together as you might expect - you want to get resources to do crafting to get better equipment (or furniture and stuff) to kill enemies to progress further in the story to get access to better stuff and more skills. I just really like how there's just so many...I don't know, mechanics to the game. Every class can level up by completing tasks (craft X of this, kill X of this while this class, chop down a rare pine tree, use your charged fishing ability X times and so forth), which gets you better recipes, special moves, tools, etc. Also, your character levels up. Also, each of your skills levels up (different weapon skills, specific crafting skills like armor crafting, weapon crafting, furniture crafting, various harvesting skills), and you also get something called Bliss for reaching milestones in the game, which gives you bonuses like a bigger inventory, the ability to get haircuts, or pets. It's not exactly what I'd call strategic or complex, but all this sort of stuff is like crack to me.

So I beat GTA V yesterday. One neat little detail I noticed was during a big shootout with the Chinese gangsters, where an enemy popped up at my side suddenly as I was shooting at another one. The newcomer was perfectly positioned to kill me instantly, but then didn't because I killed the guy I was engaging, and instead of shooting the ambusher looked over to see if his buddy was okay (he wasn't), giving me a split second to finish him off before he could recover. It's a very little thing, but seeing such a human reaction from a random mook in an unscripted shootout blew my mind a bit.

That also happens in Max Payne 3. If you get a headshot on a dude near another dude, he'll go WUUAAAH and do a double take because his buddy just got his brains blown out.

A little thing I never noticed before from Fatal Frame 2: in their default costumes, both Mio and Mayu are dressed very somberly. They both wear brown, black and white, with one splotch of color: a crimson bow. Mayu also has a high collar, hiding her throat. It's so obvious in hindsight, but so subtle that I hadn't realized it until now. I play the game at least once every couple years.

In the Payday series the characters use codenames and due to the voice actor for "Hoxton" not being available during the initial recording sessions of the second game he was replaced. Overkill wrapped this into part of the storyline and recently released some DLC where you break him out of prison and get him back onto your crew. A little gag being that he's really pissed off that "new" Hoxton has his codename and mask. The little thing is when he interacts with the "new" Hoxton(Houston) he doesn't use the code name. He just calls him a fucker or a twat instead.

Here's a pretty ingenious little thing in Dead Space that I bet was on purpose. In the first game, the targeting reticle on the screen does not come from a point right in the center, the beam projects outward toward the center from where Isaac is aiming the gun. When you rotate the beam on the plasma cutter from horizontal to vertical and back, it rotates counter clockwise instead of clockwise, like this: Since Isaac is on the bottom left side of the screen at all times, rotating the beam clockwise would throw off the player's aim because the reticle would rotate in a direction opposite where the enemies will be coming at him perspective-wise, from the right side to left. Because of the FOV, if the beam rotated clockwise, the enemy would have moved out of it by the time the cutter rotated because the up-and-right motion is also the opposite direction they will be moving unless they're retreating, which enemies in Dead Space don't really ever do. Dead Space 2 and 3 changed this by making Isaac's aiming be a faked animation and having the "real" target always be directly at the middle of the screen like any other shooter instead of making the shots come from him. Alan Wake also does this by having the flashlight or gun aiming project outward from Alan meaning you're basically steering him like a forklift when you're in aiming mode.

You can change it back in the settings, thank god. And you should, as the beam trails from the barrel make it much easier to plan your shots for things like the Line Gun and even the Plasma Cutter.

It's not just a game, but the ps4 had an update today that had shareplay in it. Shareplay is amazing. Basically, I can have someone connect to my console and play a game as if they're sitting next to me. So any game that is a split screen only multiplayer can still be played with a buddy online. I can also "hand" them my controller and they can play any of my games without having to download anything. They don't even need to own the game. They limit you to only being able to stream for one hour, but all you have to do is restart the shareplay and your friend can resume where they left off. I got to play Alien Isolation for 3 hours today because my friend was using shareplay with me. This is seriously amazing.

Speaking of Dead Space, In the first game, some time in the last year or two (I first noticed it sometime last year), they silently patched the game so that enemy corpses automatically drop their items without having to stomp/shoot them first. Holy poo poo does this streamline things. I hope they add this to the other two games at some point (you can kind of get the same effect in 3 with Acid Glaze, but there's otherwise better accessories for a lot of guns).

Playing Borderlands 2 for the first time and really enjoying it more than I did Borderlands. The "Too Close For Missles" mission was tailor made for me. I LOVE Top Gun and was giggling like an idiot through that whole mission. For those who haven't played it: You come across a displaced fighter pilot named Loggins who was kicked out of school for gyro pilots. The mission he gives you is this: This is in the intro to Top Gun while Danger Zone, performed by Kenny Loggins is playing: You have to go to the camp and steal their volleyballs and jet fuel, then light their volleyball net on fire. Through the whole thing there are references and quotes from Top Gun. Once you light the net on fire three guys named "Shirtless Dudes" attack you. They're wearing jeans, no shirts and dog tags. When you kill one (or all) of them they yell "GOOOOOSE!!". (R.I.P. Goose) I was grinning ear to ear.

The starting nations (England, France, Germany, Spain and Venice) as well as a few others get full, long winded battle speeches (we lucky few etc) modified by a few factors. Lords of the Fallen is a terrible untested buggy piece of poo poo that crashes every 15 minutes and you shouldn't buy it. However, the animation work in the game is gorgeous. Attacks for you and your enemies feel fluid and organic, while your defensive dodge changes based on the context and the angle your moving in. Credit where credit is due.

It doesn't crash for me. It can't run with an FPS cap of more than 32 or it threatens to melt my computer, admittedly Seconding the animation work though. When you're in heavy armour you actually feel like a big, heavy bastard akin to some sort of space marine. When you run your character just sort of hunches forward and can only lean forward slightly to make himself quicker, and if you're walking then he has this half-intimidating-half-adorable waddle going on as his armour shakes him side to side. Equally, if you're carrying a heavy weapon in one hand he'll be noticeably weighed down on that side and brace himself accordingly.

Speaking of animations, yet another little thing from Dead Space 3: Isaac (presumably Carver too) has several animations for taking damage from enemies from different angles, in different parts of the body, and of different types of damage (slash, stab, blunt objects etc). They could've just had him do an "ouch I got hurt" recoil for the upper body whenever you eat a necromorph blade or whatever, but instead they took the time to make the damage appear locational. <--- Also, my new avatar probably counts as a little thing somehow because they managed to gently caress up the writing quality in 3 so badly that the game is hilarious AND fun to play!

Dead Space 3 had kinda crappy writing true, but there was one blend of QTE and writing I really liked - hammering the 'use' key to close a door before acidic gas kills you and your girlfriend; a girlfriend who, unfortunately, is on the other side of the room and won't be able to get to you. The way Ellie screams at you to save yourself and seal her in was pretty heartwrenching combined with the fact you had to force Isaac to do it.

I finished Portal 2's co-op mode a little while ago, and it was excellent. The puzzles alone made it worthwhile, but it was almost as much fun killing or messing up my partner for the one-liners GlaDos would respond with. The control scheme was also great, particularly because you had 3 simple commands outside of emoting: stand there, look there, timer starting from 3. While it's easier with voice communication, between those three commands and being able to see your partner's screen, it seems perfectly possible to solve puzzles silently. The best little thing for me though was how Atlas and Peabody are just so expressive. They only have a single eye, but it's very easy to pick up on their facial expressions and body language.
