Read a McConnell staffter talking poo poo about notions that the Clinton name could pull the mid-South back into the Democratic column, in 2016.

Which was odd because I've never seen the Democrats mention any such ambition and doubt it is a possibility they seriously consider. More likely to see them dump money on demographically-promising red states in the deep south (georgia and south carolina) while consolidating recent gains in north carolina and virginia.

Still might write a token, just-for-fun letter to Hillary's staff petitioning that she do a campaign stop in Elliot County (a weirdly anomolous hyper-rural KY county that has voted democrat in every presidential election since the 1860s, but was almost snapped up by Romney in 2012). For symbolism.

Christ, let's get a break from the roof caving in on the midterms thread.

In tangentially 2016 news, Ted Cruz gives a "no comment" when asked about voting McConnell majority leader:

quote:

Ted Cruz refused to say whether or not he would support Mitch McConnell for Senate Majority Leader even after his party secured control of both chambers on Tuesday night.

Appearing on CNN, Cruz (R-Texas) was discussing the midterm election results when Wolf Blitzer asked if he would get behind McConnell.

More directly relevant, the latest edition of George Bush says Jeb is still deciding whether to run in 16:

quote:

George P. Bush told ABC's "This Week" that his father is "still assessing" a presidential bid, but suggested it was more likely that he would seek the White House this time. The ex-governor declined to run for president in 2012 despite encouragement from Republicans.

Rand Paul says he won't (as chair of a relevant Senate committee) try to block DC's marijuana legalization:

quote:

Sen. Rand Paul on Tuesday indicated that he will not stand in the way of marijuana legalization in Washington, D.C., if voters approve a ballot measure on Election Day.
The Kentucky Republican, who is the ranking member on a key subcommittee that deals with D.C. oversight, said outside a polling location in Bowling Green, Ky., that the district should have “discretion” on legalization.

Look up their national campaign office when they officially announce, call them, and say "I live [place] and I want to volunteer," or use the online form if they have it. You will make some poor rear end in a top hat's day if you're an early, enthusiastic volunteer.

I have a feeling if Clinton were the nominee she'd be playing by the old Kerry map and probably write off NC entirely, maybe or maybe not VA depending. GA and SC would never even enter into the conversation except as a joke.

I think what's a lot more likely to happen is a slow motion train wreck as Democrats spend the next two years remembering how awful a candidate Hillary is, powerless to stop it, and the Republican nominee romps to a relatively easy general election victory.

Jeb Bush will be 69 in 2024; if elected he would match Reagan's record for oldest man elected to the Presidency. His eldest son, newly minted Texas Land Commissioner George Prescott Bush, will be 46.

Of course, for anyone keeping score at home, Hillary Clinton will be 69 in 2016 and Joe Biden will be 73.

Funny how this scenario gets a lot less plausible when you slot a specific person into the "Republican nominee". Which, much to the David-Brooks-of-the-world's chagrin, has to happen eventually.

As much as yesterday was disappointing I'm looking forward to see how Republicans interpret this wrongly as a mandate to impeach / investigate Obama and pass all kinds of bad bills. I see a lot vetoes and ducking subpoenas in his future.

How the republican candidates react to this will be fascinating to watch. Who swings even harder right (if even possible) or who rises as a statesman and tries to find ways to compromise.

The Republicans just have to figure out how to sneak a clause into a personhood amendment that declares Brooks Brothers mannequins to be natural-born citizens and they'll have plenty of candidates to run.

I agree that none of the named have disqualifying medical issues at the moment, though I don't agree that age is no longer a problem until 80. A lot of serious problems can still develop in a person's 60s that could cause issues for a Presidential candidacy.

Hilary is still going to be president from 2016-2024. Literally the only way for the Republicans to defeat her is to dig up Reagan's corpse and resurrect him via science or magic. Even if Hilary were to somehow die before she is elected in 2016 and 2020, Chelsea would probably serve in her place.

Anyone know how a massive economic downturn (worldwide) would play out now? Obviously Fox News would blame Obama, but at the same time I'm wondering if it would motivate the non-midterm-voting crowd to really get out, or change the progressive calculus a lot as incomes drop once again while protecting corporate profits.

If there's serious debt ceiling or budget shenanigans it might pop the stock/tech bubble, and even if that doesn't happen the issues in Europe/China might cause enough of a general slowdown that causes stock/tech/fracking to drop.

Most of the speculation in here is on political matters or assuming we largely stay on the same course economically (or slow but not crash). At this point I don't think that's likely.
