Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
I went to vote (:911:) and, well, this guy at the local library.

For reference, the red rectangle is where the car was "parked".

The front lot was full, but there were approximately two cars in the back lot 50 feet away.

I was next to a car in traffic who was honking at the guy in front of him because he wasn't blocking the box. The car in front of me wasn't blocking the box either, then got some space and pulled ahead. The honking car to my left zoomed forward cutting me off and then back into the left lane, blocking the box.

I know! The lady that used to drive from CB to HFX to see her daughter passed by exits I drive on a weekly basis and that freaked me out, but then there are tons of poo poo drivers around here. Why can't they accelerate in a merge lane and get up to the highway speed? Hell, a kid was killed last Friday by someone blowing a stop sign 3 blocks from my house on the same road I was cut off on my bike and broke my leg! Needless to say I don't ride MCs anymore, too many stunned people looking at their phones instead of driving around here.

Could be wrong (it's been a good few years since I passed my test) but here in the UK, that'll fail you — not merging at speed. The rule of thumb is basically that you need to be doing 60mph when you leave the merge lane — more if you plan on immediately heading into the middle lane to get past lorries etc.

Pretty sure you only go on the highway for CDL (at least in PA). And for me it was only about 2-3 miles, hit the exit and return on local roads.

In my case, anemic 4 banger + auto trans + uphill ramp = 50 mph at the end of the merge lane if I really mash it. There is one onramp in my town that I never use. I'll drive 10 blocks to use one that is longer and gives me a better look over my shoulder.

There's one I use pretty regularly which is similar to that. It's probably 1/3 of a mile long, all downhill and almost perfectly straight. If I stomped on it I could probably be doing over 120 by the time I hit the merge point, yet every other time I use it I'm stuck behind someone merging at 50 mph onto a highway everyone does 70+ on. It's insane.

Here's the ramp I'm talking about :

It goes from an 80 kph to an 80 kph highway, and they still can't get up to speed on that. It's drat near straight, and the sight lines are wide open.

People failing to merge drives me nuts. I grew up in Ontario and drove on the 4XX highways all the time. When I moved to Winnipeg, the first thing I learned is that merging was a totally foreign concept.

This intersection is the bane of my existence:

Turning east onto Bishop Grandin there is a merge lane that is at least 150' or more. Traffic on Bishop is only 80 KM/h so that's ample time to get up to speed and merge, but 90% of drivers stop mid-way on the turnoff and wait for the lights to change and traffic to clear completely. If someone is coming south and makes the left on the advanced left turn, some people will sit through that entire cycle as well.

Any kind of adequate driving is a foreign concept in Winnipeg, especially with the rampant perimiteritis that hole suffers from. And the rest of us who live (or used to live) outside of Winnipeg laugh at the bad drivers :P

To be fair, about 90% of the morons we share a road with think a proper left turn means to barrel directly into the farthest right lane of the road they are turning onto, so I can sort of understand being timid on the merge.

For anyone who doesn't realize just how bad it is in this country, this is the route I was directed to follow for my driving test in 2002 in Medina, Ohio:

From what I've heard through friends' younger siblings it hasn't changed much other than that the BMV is now in the building at the center of the block they had me circle. They still basically just go around the block.

Standard five cone "maneuverability" test, then around the back of the strip mall. Left at a light on to the 35 MPH main road, another left at a light, right at a light, right at a four-way, right at a light, and right back in to the parking lot. Nothing remotely challenging, no speed limits higher than 35, all lefts are protected. If you can gently caress this up cars are not for you, IMO.

I'd still do it with the van too, but given the chassis similarity I assume the PT would be a lot easier.

Is there anything else a stupidly powerful PT Cruiser would be good for? I'm pretty sure they've got a beam axle out back so that + convertible has to = hilarious handling so it's probably best kept in a roughly straight line.

Ha! Your test was far more complicated than mine was back in 03 in Chardon, OH. Drive out of the BMV cross rt44. Pull into a development, turn around in the first cul de sac, and return to BMV. The only "tricky" part was when you are driving through the parking lot of the BMV there is a painted stop mark on the pavement with no red sign and if you blow that you fail.

After watching 90% of drivers act like total loving retards on 480 every day I feel like its well within my rights to buy a $500 beater and drive it into the Ohio statehouse as means of protest against the abysmal driving standards set by my god awful state.

I didn't even have a "maneuverability" test: Turn left at the stop sign, then right at the next one, then go down this side street and parallel park, then do a couple more turns, never even getting anywhere near the only reasonably busy street in town, and then get back to the start point. Can't fully remember for sure, but the only thing I got dinged for was either stopping too short of a stop line, or stopping just over the stop line. My parallel parking was clunky as all hell, I'm sure, but it wasn't even mentioned. No k-turn or anything like that either. 10 minutes, tops. Not Ohio, unfortunately, but a small town in upstate New York.

When I took my test in FL there was no road test.

It was pull into this small fenced in lot with a 15 MPH limit (in reality you did the whole thing at idle speeds), turn left, pull into a slanted parking spot, back out, turn right, do a 3-point turn. drive to parking lot, park. Get license.

If you're in the Alyth, 58th to 26th ave, abandon hope because it's Blackfoot or bust. and most of the side shortcuts slam you back into Blackfoot or Glenmore only with more traffic at slower speeds. Any crisis down there and traffic is just not moving. The one glimmer of hope is that 11th street north of blackfoot becomes 12th and that will get you slowly onto memorial around the zoo at St. Georges, but you and 10 000 other people will be using it and you have to use Ogden or Highfield to get there. No direct route from Alyth.

Foothills industrial is one large CP rail trap. If you're between Glenmore and 130th; Barlow onto Shepard will sneak you around, but the left turn onto Glenmore West is an eternity in itself due to the short left turn fighting Ogden. Cut through Ogden to Blackfoot and back onto Deerfoot. North of Glenmore, 50th ave onto Ogden, but traffic is a bitch or 50th onto Barlow - Deerfoot. 52nd is an alternative with one CP line to jump, but all the construction at Peigan makes it a pain. There is Stoney, with connectors at 114th and Glenmore but the connectors northbound are 17th and 16th Ave, so you're looking for Memorial you're backtracking or if you're into the north west, it's a long circle back. The plus side is with Stoney you're at 120+ the whole way round.

Glenmore didn't work badly once I finally got there, but I was trying to be clever and I thought the 26th/25th Ave. connector didn't have a level crossing (oh boy, it very much does!) so I had to backtrack significantly to get back to Glenmore. If I'd just gone south on Blackfoot when I was on 58th, everything would've been hunky dory.

It's a good thing Memory Express is cheap and awesome, because I'd never put up with that location otherwise. This was the second time in a row I caught a CP train leaving there...
