In Kyiv, the General attorney is concerned that "volunteer batallion" "Aidar" may stage a coup. http://www.pravda.com.ua/news/2014/11/7/7043584/?attempt=1 These are highly "interesting times" on both sides. Of note is that Aidar is, as far as I know, not directly linked to any Oligarch. Their pretty heavy handed tactics in Donbass (seperatists tend to see them as the third most "evil" Group after Azov and Right Sector) definitly give them legitimacy in Ukrainian nationalists circles, and that they of all People in some way cooperate with the seperatists and/or Russia is incredibly unlikely. While I am the last one to minimize the role of far right militias, I think it is not very likely that a single batallion can successfully stage a coup. Especially one like Aidar which tooks some really heavy losses in the fighting. This thus seems more like a prelude to either increasing control over this unit or disbanding it. E: It seems that the more "Populist", as in, not linked to oligarchs and/or foreign interests (Strelkov f.e. apperantly had a Russian Oligarch sugar Daddy, and fell in close correlation with his sugar Daddy getting jailed for tax evasion), fractions on both sides are loosing out. I can virtually assure you Aidar has an oligarch or two backing them because you can't even get a job running a rural traffic stop without an oligarch. I think both revolutions are eating (some) of their children, but the biggest danger after direct Russian invasion is their respective oligarchies reaching an even more crooked deal than the usual shenanigans. As for Bezler, I would guess he's being held at an undisclosed location where he could die of a pre-existing medical condition at any time. Putin's not worried about anyone coming for him and he could still be useful or killed off as needed, so no need to make a decision right now. Forgall posted:Apparently they are fast-tracking the law which will prohibit foreign companies from storing personal data of russians from 2016 to 2015. Not really sure what consequences it will have. Well the obvious and immediate one is that pretty much every major social network gets banned in Russia. On the one hand, the current situation where a very large part of everyone's online activity is run through a handful of US megacorporations isn't exactly ideal, given that US data protection laws are pretty lovely even for their own citizens, and virtually non-existent for foreigners. On the other hand, Balkanizing Russia's internet access even further is just going to isolate Russians even further from the rest of the world and force them to rely more on their heavily distorted state media. It could have global knock-on effects, too. A lot of countries started thinking quite hard about this after Snowden. If Russia follows China's lead, maybe others would, too. Of course, a "great firewall of Russia" may not affect Russians too much, given how most seem to use VK anyway.

I'm about to do a lecture on it to dozens of US journalists in New York, that should give it another boost.

Smerdyakov posted:Товарищ, зачем ты понимаешь украинского языка? I can read Ukrainian and generally get the meaning but not speak or understand it unless someone is speaking very slowly. Kind of like Dutch for most Germans. I would normally agree with that, but the normal structures of power are considerably damaged, and it could be feasible that some of the resulting power vacuums get at least temporarily filled by non oligarch actors. In addition, which Oligarch? As far as I understand current Oligarch shenangians in Ukraine proper, the main thing is Kolomoisky vs. Poroshenko, with Firtash (who got a major win in the election because his Pet Nazi got into the Rada, while Kolomoiskies did not) being currently allied with Poroshenko, but Poroshenko not being very sure about his allegiance. Firtash was also instrumental in getting Klitschko and Poroshenko into one camp, and it is strongly implied that he has good relations with the Germans at least right now, and had decent working relations with the Russians. The US also apperantly choose to no longer bother him with money laundering charges. Concerning the damage, what I am worried about is the "super awesome Russian invasion prevention plan by your friendly pro Western Oligarchs". Basically, rob and expropriate Ukraine so thoroughly that not even Russia wants it anymore, blame every social hardship on Russia, exfiltrate the loot into the West, burn down everything you cant loot and commit just enough cruelties to make Ukraine a utterly divided political powderkeg but not enough cruelties to be ousted outright.

I've read a lot of articles by the theatre/art/literature-related opposition where they call him a gopnik or pahan - a thug with a worldview typical of the 90s russian criminal society. Pretty accurate considering the guy JUST decided to appropriate another private oil business (Bashneft). A plausible situation that Ukraine has been put in by Russia. Blame still lies with Russia. I won't deny the "West" is going to exploit the situation but "operation gently caress with Ukraine and then rob it" was never a plan before Russia decided the cold war was still a thing. This will always be Russia's mess and that they might not even get the spoils is entirely their problem.
