So England has decided to come out swinging. After sitting basically the entire war in Europe out, they've decided to land in Japan-occupied China with 6-7 divisions, quickly pushing aside the small garrisons left and meeting up with the Communist Chinese in a matter of weeks. I decided to invade Korea to help out and try to make sure we didn't risk the loss of South Korean films and pop-stars. I only discover now I cannot liberate South Korea.

This is kind of an annoying, if minor oversight. This also came up with Austria, and the Czech Republic. I was allowed to liberate Poland, but for some reason it doesn't get any of its Baltic Sea provinces back?

I guess the simplest workaround is to change the owner/controller of a bunch of provinces I took over? Is there a way to also force their government into the Allies while I'm doing that?

Yeah, fixing flags isn't really a priority at the moment. The Netherlands has been named The Netherlands for ages though, and you can't see they country name in any of those screenshots.

Each counter represents ~10,000 soldiers, and the type of soldiers they are represented by symbols. That has been changed to the new setup where there's a symbol of a helmet to say they are infantry instead of a counter with an X on it and a number 1 means ~10,000 soldiers, whereas 2 means ~20,000 soldiers, etc.. Additionally there is now a small icon of a man on the map instead of just being the counter and people do not want that man to be there. Then there's also been a change to make the terrain map have a ~1 province wide colored border instead of coloring every province on the map to show control.

Technically a HoI3 counter wasn't a fixed size unit, a division could be 4000-15000 men. In HoI4 the 1/x under a unit means there is 1/x division(s), which can also be variable sizes.

I'm pretty sure there was a console command in a past HoI that would basically do a Turtledove by spawning a faction with all techs researched and super-powerful units in one province. It's a reasonably interesting premise for a mapgame to shake up the 50th time you do WWII and you wouldn't have to actually read any of his writing that way. I'd call that a win-win.

At least in HoI2 the aliens would continuously spawn in max tech units but wouldn't declare war on anybody except the owner of the province they spawned in on and wouldn't get ships unless they spawned on a sea province. Maybe they changed them to declare war on everybody at some point though because the last time I played a Hearts of Iron game was HoI2 vanilla before any of the expansions were released.

From the link I gave above it seems like its less censorship and more avoiding the ire of the harmful media board which can place some pretty strict restrictions on how its sold.

Probably this. In the US, a little flash of nudity in the wrong decade meant an x-rated game, even if you could see more in an r-rated movie at the same time. Things have lightened up a bit over time, but you don't want to risk it because someone got really picky one day on the board and decides that "no, I don't want my kids playing this filthy naked WWII simulator". Just swap nudity for violence with Germany.

Just wanted to say thanks for these beautiful pictures unironically. I have used counters instead of sprites since the time of Now and Forever. I don't really give a gently caress about it but I will miss them dearly and would be the guy to turn off the sprites and just play using the new helmet+number icons if that were possible.

So my plan isn't working great here. I gave a bunch of Polish land back to Poland from Germany- but when I re-built Austria it basically went back to pre-Annexation, except drifting towards Comintern. Is there a straight-forward "liberation" file in the game that I can mod to allow me to simply liberate Austria and Czechoslovakia the same way I can with Poland?

The Command and Conquer thing was something else entirely, and you'll note that the later C&Cs didn't even bother with it. podcat said they couldn't sell games in Germany which had flamethrowers in it, which is utterly wrong. The worst that board can do is ban sales to minors, which should only make a tiny impact on HoI sales in Germany.

Although I have to admit the idea of 15 year old play HoI multiplayer is somewhat entertaining. "GG soviet fag, no skill just spam infantry loving human being"

In addition to banning sales to minors, it also bans mail ordering the games which depending on German case law, of which I know nothing, could apply to digital distribution as well.

Yup, they did. From wikipedia:

Flammpanzer I a field variant of the German Panzer I used briefly during the war in North Africa
Panzer II Flamm, a variant of the German Panzer II Ausf D/E.
Flammpanzer 38, a variant of the Jagdpanzer 38(t) tank destroyer.
Panzerkampfwagen B2 (F), a variant produced by the Germans based on captured French Char B1 tank chassis.
Flammpanzer III Ausf M/Panzer III (F1), a variant of the German Panzer III Ausf M.
Sdkfz 251/16 Flammpanzerwagen, a variant based on the Sdkfz 251 series of half-tracks.
