Well, shit.
I'm obviously the world's biggest noob, because I can't work out how to leave an instant adventure group without dying half a dozen times in the process. Today I was level 30 and was put into a level 50 IA group on Ember Isle. When I'd done my 7/7, I dropped the group, at which point I was reset to level 30, but still in a level 50 zone. Several corpse hops later I finally managed to respawn without being immediately killed, so I teleported back to my home shard. You can imagine my surprise when I then found myself STILL in Ember Isle at level 30. Several more deaths later, I finally found a clear spot to use Soul Recall.

When you drop group, you get a 'return to where you were when you queued' option, which I assume works fine if you are not being level-boosted. But for lower levels, I just have to soul recall every time?

Other than that, game is pretty fun. Chloroharb rocks.

I just came back to the game myself, but it doesn't look like that issue has been posted in the IA forum yet - might be worth submitting a bug report thru the game client. I tried testing it on a low-level, but it keeps putting me in a Stonefield group.

If you disable side-kicking by right clicking on your portrait will that prevent you from getting into random IA groups beyond your normal level? That might be a temporary solution. Otherwise soul recall prior to dropping group which is pretty annoying with the cooldown. Also, you could ask the NPC healer to revive you on the spot if you don't want to revive at your body, but it incurs additional soul vitality penalties or something.

[edit] A better solution I saw ingame today: drop the group and then queue for an instant adventure in the zone you want to return to and take the free teleport home.

I've used IA with sidekicking multiple times, including teleporting my level 12 warrior to Tempest Bay and being boosted to level 60. When I was ready to drop group, I found a place away from mobs, dropped group and got the teleport back prompt. That worked just fine.

Maybe it's because you were immediately put in combat?

Despite downloading this game shortly after I first posted here(why oh why is it 18 loving gigs?) I'm only just starting now. Probably? I dunno. The thread's mostly dead, and the goons that remain seem to be semi-bitter vets. I would like to get a goon presence going if one doesn't exist anymore, since I just started and this game does seem to have good potential. There's been 2 or 3 new people posting in here in the last couple of pages, so maybe we could get together and start a newer goon group for those of us who aren't burnt out on it?

I'd definitely be interested in a resurrected goon group if other people are as well. So how do you level up more than your initial 3 souls? Like, what if I get to level 50 or 60 or whatever and suddenly decide I wanna level up the bard soul for whatever reason? Do I basically have to figure out which souls I want early on and stick with them, or can I level them all independently?

Souls aren't leveled individually, you get all of them (well, all but the expansion soul) at the start. As you level you will expand the amount of roles you have, and each role (think build) is a set of 3 souls that you have put points into. It's really a great build system, you can change at any time out of combat.

After finding the capital city and purchasing a new role, I think I get it. So now the question is what role should I choose for my 2nd one? I've got Dervish as my primary cookie cutter role, but I chose it pretty much solely on the fact that it sounded neat. So far it's served pretty well in the quests that I've been doing, so I guess I'm looking at for a role that's completely different, just to see how much the game changes. Anyone have any suggestions?

It is beneficial to fill as many roles as you can.

So get a DPS role (Dervish fits, but it wasn't great in Storm Legion) and a tanking role (Riftstalker is good) and a utility role "just because" - this is bard - you'll basically end up DPSing most of the time, even if you're "the" utility just because it's irrelevant if people know what they're doing, but you'll still get more groups if you have a utility role to checkmark because it's supposed to be necessary.

That is, of course, if you actually want to do other roles. If you get picked as the tank you basically have to tank. You'll get an assload of groups but it's a more important playstyle than just mashing number keys. Which you can totally still do. Sometimes.

This is all worthless advice if you don't use the group finder and in that case just multiple DPS roles and roles that just look fun are beneficial for soloing. Maybe a role is good at Rifts (in my case this was Bard) but another role is better for solo questing. (Marksman, in my experience)

The prebuilts are there to help guide you, to get you into the teens and 20's as a decent build without you getting too exposed to the wide expanse of the soul system. I would suggest one role be your solo questing build, one role being ranged damage for instant adventures (do them, great exp), and maybe one for dungeons and such. Use the class guides on the rift forums to help with leveling builds.

Once I pick a new role, can I change it, or do I have to buy a completely new role? Like, if I pick Riftstalker as my 2nd role, and then decide that I don't like it later, can I change it to Demolition Specialist, or do I have to buy a 3rd role and assign demo to that?

Each role is a unique build...role 1 could be a bard mix of bard, riftstalker, ranger

Role 2 could be a tank build of riftstalker primary, with a few points in bard and nightblade

role 3 could be a ranger build of primary ranger, marksmen, and some bard.

Each role can be a mix of whatever combo of 3 souls you want, they are each unique with their own hotbar and you can swap between them whenever out of combat. With addons you can even autochange gear and wardrobe when changing roles.

Class trainers will reset the points assigned in your role for a cost, but it's pretty cheap. When there are zero points assigned, you can swap souls around as you like.

The app is ridiculous and I'm still on the fence as to whether it is worth even having. It has been buggy for so long that I don't anticipate them fixing it anytime soon.

As for rogues, I haven't spent much time playing one but in general starting off with the pre-built ones work pretty well. After awhile maybe try using a 61 spec for an idea of which souls to combine and just trying things out since you can reset your souls at a trainer.

The levelling guides I used were on rift junkies and they are a bit outdated now. Here is the rogue one http://www.junkiesnation.com/2011/08/20/rogue-levelling-guide/ which could be a good starting point on how the class works.

Tom Powers

During the end of Storm Legion the rogue pre-builds were all the top specs, contributed by the people who made them originally.

Top specs being top DPS, most HP, etc.

I was rather impressed.

Now with that said it was pretty much pointless unless you were a cutting-edge raider, but then my understanding was that tier 3 was about $$$ rather than perfect DPS rotations, since they were essentially impossible anyway when released. Meaning if you had an understanding of RAID mechanics, you could do good DPS (relatively) without "the best dps spec" so long as you knew what skills to use. Most people I played with (tier 1-2) were really, really, really bad. Incredibly overgeared ($$$) and incredibly bad. Definitely room for customizing the spec how you like if you're fine without it being "objectively the most dps possible if you follow the 3 minute rotation."

But the pre-builds were all good and should give you an understanding. They are, however, geared towards the top-end and some of them are just awful until that point. Hunter (the Rogue one with the pet - probably got the name wrong) comes to mind, since the 61st point you spend is the most important by far giving you like half a dozen huge buffs.

This is extremely helpful to know. I've been wanting to try ranged DPS and pets, and when I read the guide on (I think) Huntsmen, it confused the hell out of me with all the buffs and macroes you're supposed to juggle. It confused me even more that this build was labeled as easy, while the Dervish build was labeled as advanced, and has literally 0 macroes and buffs you have to keep track of. I'm currently wrecking PvE face with Dervish at level 18, but I want to try other build styles that give me different ways to play and approach situations that don't require me to do math, keep track of a stopwatch, and be a high level player at the same time.

So basically, I like the Dervishes "poosh bottans 1-7 till targit full down" style of play, and I want to try it in ranged form, with pets and explosives if possible, without having to be more complicated than that.

Tom Powers
May 26, 2007

Marksman was, during Storm Legion, VERY smooth from (30-40ish?) to 60. There was even a prebuild for it. Raid-game it was more utility than DPS, and Huntsmen at that point was really good DPS, and VERY easy. I think the final skill lets you have more buffs active at once, so you don't really have to juggle. You CAN if you want to heal, or have some damage reduction at some point, but usually there was no need.

Now Huntsman was "the" top rogue range DPS spec through tier 2 (not sure about T3) but to reach that level of DPS you had a really long skill rotation because this skill comes off cooldown every 8 seconds, but you have to use this other skill immediately before it etc. I could out-DPS people using the same spec, with better gear, while they were trying (and failing) to follow the rotation. I could push my DPS up by about 30% by trying to do the rotation but that was just too much. It wasn't necessary for low tier PUGs and people would often forget about raid mechanics while trying, which sometimes lead to wipes.

That was, once again, my Storm Legion experience and I'm sure it's all changed to be more accessible.

Anyone got any advice for earning credits? I wanna get those P2P souls, but I lack any spare spending money for video game stuff. The one thing I can't stand in any F2P game is blocking off game mechanics behind a pay wall. Sure, do all the decorative poo poo that you want. Hell, even do the extra bag slots and earrings, cause you don't need those, but don't make me buy souls so I can copy what all the guides are saying.

Tom Powers

So long as you ignore the GEAR that they have for money (even if it's an absurd price) the F2P model is pretty decent. The soul packs are really not THAT expensive, especially when you consider that's basically all they're charging for expansions, and they're permanent unlocks at that.

If you can buy an old Rift box copy you get a bunch of stuff, and it unlocks the AH, which is where you can make money. It's a pretty good deal.

Making money? That'll get you credits, since you can purchase REX (1250 credits each I think?) from other players. I think they're around 1400 platinum on Deepwood now but you can always get a better deal. And then turn around and sell it for profit.

Edit: Deepwood isn't a PVP server. Seastone is the only NA PVP server. You can switch servers, too, temporarily and "permanently," for free.

I love Assassin. It's a fun soul and does ludicrous amounts of damage. (I recently discovered I wasn't using Debilitating Dart or Expose Weakness in my rotation :saddowns:)

The thing is though, you have absolutely zero AoE. If you're finding yourself in need of AoE, you're gonna want to look at Bladedancer or Nightblade for your primary melee soul, Marksman for ranged.

e: or sab, but until you get silent setup and make Annihilation Bomb detonate charges it's mostly a gimmick.

http://rift.magelo.com/en/soultree#z/xkGB5liGkG8/t
Something like this might be decent for melee AoE at level 20.

AoE

#show Twin Strike
suppressmacrofailures
cast Reprisal
cast Twin Strike
cast Quick Shot

ST

#show Quick Strike
suppressmacrofailures
cast Reprisal
cast Quick Strike
cast Keen Strike
cast Quick Shot

Finishers would be Compound Attack if you're not dying, Meditative Trance if you are. This also gives you a ranged interrupt, which can be handy. Weapon Barrage also silences for 5s, so a ranged attacker will run up to you if you hit them with it.

As far as using Bladedancer in the long run, I can't say I'm a fan of rotating all of the rhythmic movements.

e2: swapped MM for Ranger, since the 0-point pig goes up to level 36.

That sounds like some pretty solid advice. I'll likely be buying a 3rd role tomorrow, and I'll try out that build and see how it feels.

As far as MM vs. Ranger, I tried Ranger in a different build, and I actually found the pig a bit annoying. Setting it on aggressive made it target everything in a 20 meter radius, while setting it on defensive just made it target everything that looked at me funny. It sucked trying to stealth through anything anywhere. I'll probably have to play with it on passive for a while and see if that helps out a bit. Aside from that though, I like the ranged builder that comes with 0 point MM. It allows me to draw a single foe towards me while I chip away at its health and build up combo points, which is coming in handy at Stonefield.

Quick Shot is a 0-point ranged builder from Ranger.

One thing I forgot to mention, leave the pet on passive. If you're gonna use a pet, just use a macro like

code:
#show Quick Shot
suppressmacrofailures
petattack
cast Quick Shot
That way it will ONLY attack things you're shooting at. It'll still use its abilities on cooldown, which is nice.
