Detention is so good that when someone said not to watch it a page ago I smiled fondly and started re-watching it just now. The opening scene alone is so good at being totally insufferable, and it's just great seeing how they stagger and setup all the different callbacks and character subplots early on. Ione's is my favorite

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is on Amazon Prime, and this is probably heresy to a lot of people, but outside of Gene Wilder's performance, it's legitimately bad. Charlie is a lovely kid, the cinematography is bad, and it takes nearly an hour before you get to the chocolate factory. Add this to the list of childhood nostalgia movies I shouldn't have rewatched as an adult.\ I followed it up with Burton's Batman which is, of course, still fantastic.

Regardless, it's still way better than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which I decided to watch one day to see if it was as bad as I thought, and it was indeed worse than I thought it would be.

Witness for the Prosecution is borderline depending on how you want to define noir, but it probably has enough of the hallmarks to squeak in. It's on Netflix.

Warriors of the Rainbow is a pretty good movie about Taiwanese aboriginal tribesmen fighting against Japanese occupation. There's a little kid running around with an LMG killing EVERYBODY near the end of the movie which was . It's really dark overall and 2 and a half hours or so in length, for those with short attention spans. Their tribal song was pretty cool, and I kind of suspect that the Sheediq's "Rainbow Bridge" is what crazy dog and cat people are trying to pretend their pets will go when they die. Also I noticed Machine Gun Preacher is up again or still up.. It's Gerard Butler playing the role of a crazy drug-addled biker gang member who finds Jesus, and then decides to go to Africa for missionary work. He sees some atrocities and loses his loving mind entirely, and forces everyone he knows to give him money so he can kill a bunch of LRA fighters single-handedly. The protagonist is not a likable guy, and probably not that sane - there's an amusing interview with Butler where he talks about getting into the role and how he was scared shitless of screwing it up and pissing off the dude he was playing. The guy's pretty much what Stallone et al in The Expendables were trying to pretend to be. coyo7e fucked around with this message at 21:44 on Nov 13, 2014 |

Kiss Me Deadly is great but is also very much a statement on Noir itself. It's a good one to revisit after you've watched some others — for example, it's a lot clearer in its disapproval of the noir genre's misogyny (or at least identifies it more clearly). And Kiss me Deadly isn't afraid to show its protagonist being abusive in a way that other noirs might pass off as charming.

And by those standards it isn't even the worst PG-13 out there. Your memory has conflated the movie into something worse than it really is, I say watch it and confront your childhood demon. The cats just bite her a bit until she wakes up.

I watched it for the first time just recently and would answer this with an emphatic yes. That movie is completely unapologetically bonkers, really made me miss the period when Burton's schtick was still fresh and charming.

And here I thought Burton's shtick was offensive and tasteless garbage back when I was like 14 and saw Batman Returns for the first time. It's a hot pile of crap. If you want to go psychedelic Adam West style Batman then I guess it's pretty hot, but personally I have always felt that it's just hot poo poo, and I don't care what temperature the turd is, it's still a turd.

A lot of people will argue Batman Returns commits the sin of a man who dresses up as a bat fighting a person who dresses up as a cat, and a penguin-man with less seriousness than its lofty subject material deserves. I am not one of those people
