I was so disappointed that they were showing the pilot over again in the guise of a new episode until that song.

I'm substituting for an elementary school (grades 3-5, or ages 8-10 or thereabouts) librarian tomorrow, and given the weather forecast I expect that outdoor recess will be canceled. In such circumstances, students are directed either to the gym or the library, and if they go to the library they all expect to watch a movie/show/something on a big screen.

I've subbed for this librarian before and likewise dealt with indoor recess, so I know all that the library normally has on hand for these events are some Scooby Doo DVDs and like one DVD of Halloween-themed Shrek shorts. gently caress that poo poo, though, I hate watching that and students don't care much for it either. What's a properly good thing to play for kids ages 8-10 for the duration of a recess?

About 20-30 minutes, I think? There's usually no classes that visit the library right before and after lunch, so I don't keep good track of the schedule midday. :v:

I've got a kid so I've seen most of the kid's cartoons over the last few years, and it's definitely one of the better ones. It's very beautiful looking, almost like anime without the anime.

It seems obvious to me that cartoons are experiencing some sort of revolution lately, tackling subjects that were unthinkable for animated features to talk about even just a decade ago. I've found a timeline of American cartoons, describing how much they changed over the years, and would like to hear your opinions on the matter.
Here it is.

I don't know, I'm not quite as enamored of the current crop of CN shows as a lot of people, but they're definitely as good as anything else on the list of Respectable Art Not For Kids Anymore western cartoons, or even, god forbid, animes (FLCL is still my favorite animated show, bite me :japan:) I like the way things are going with Kickstarter and miniseries, maybe they can revive the OVA as a format

That said though what's still missing is theatrical traditional animation, it doesn't look like that's going to rise from the grave anytime soon unfortunately. Maybe it hasn't been long enough since Disney stopped to expect people to take it up again, but animated TV just can't really do the same things movies can

I like Legends of Chima. It started off pretty mediocre, but really picked up in the second arc and has been pretty good since then.

Also, Fangar is the best villain, his voice actor is either so terrible he loops back around to great or he is intentionally hamming the poo poo out of the role, either way it's wonderful :allears:

There's probably a thesis to be written in how anime and western animation went in completely opposite directions around the same time, with anime becoming more pandering and narrow until catering to literal pedophiles became the norm while western animation became more accessible and open to outside demographics to huge success.

BOSS BATTLES DID NOTHING WRONG
I think western animation is extremely narrow and demographically limited. 99% of it is garbage for children, with a handful of (very recent) gems that are still for children but also appeal to an older audience. Then there's adult animation, which is extremely formulaic and narrow and also usually has cheap low-effort animation, almost like it's only animated ironically.

There's probably more good anime than good western animation just because there's so much more anime created every year. There's also a lot more garbage anime for the same reason.

I'm 100% serious when I say that "Over the Garden Wall" could be looked at as a mile-stone for Western animation. It's a real turning point. Television-animation that exists as a beautifully-animated, well-told story that could be enjoyed by anyone.

Steven, are you telling LIES?
The thing that made Over the Garden Wall so great for me is that the entire thing felt timeless. They nailed the 1820's Americana tone and atmosphere so well, that if someone told me it was based off one of Washington Irving's short stories or some obscure folk tale, I would believe them without a second thought.

I had thought the first response to my mention of anime would be screaming about pedos, it was actually the second

Mission Accomplished

I'm not going to get dragged into defending anime. I do think it's sort of funny though how the people who hate anime the most seem to not actually have watched any or be familiar with it at all outside of second hand stories on the internet / extrapolating from 4chan / maybe watching a Miyazaki movie or two. Like if I asked you for concrete examples of shows throughout the years as examples of anime becoming more pandering I don't actually think you could name any.

The entire movie is a parable about why persecuting people for being different is bad, and then at the end when Norman's sister finally works up the nerve to ask the jock from school she's been crushing on for the entire movie out to see a chick flick he says that it sounds fun and that his boyfriend loves chick flicks. It's a great gag and also immediately drives home the movie's theme, the fact that it pissed off so many Christians is just icing.
