I was pulling into a 7-11 to get gas yesterday evening when I noticed an Explorer exiting that parking lot didn't have its lights on...probably because this 7-11 is insanely brightly lit so he probably just didn't notice or think about it. We were in oncoming lanes and I flashed my brights as quickly as possible, only to see him actually...turn his lights on. It's sad when I am so pleased about something so small and otherwise insignificant, but if there's a thread for that, it's this one.

I was getting gas the other night and this guy pulls into the gas station with his headlights off and hazards on. He pulls about 1/3 into a parking space and stops. I'm thinking he must have a blown fuse or something and was limping it to the gas station. So I watch as this guy backs up, pulls forward, stops, backs up, pulls forward, stops for a second. He then reverses at full speed swinging the car around, jams it into drive and then flies past me at the pump very nearly missing me, jerking the wheel at the last second. He proceeds to fly off down the road, headlights still off and hazards blinking away. By the time I realized that I needed to call 911 and report him he was gone unfortunately.

Dear Cyclist who cut me off at a roundabout - yes, you flew up the inside lane and went straight ahead even though it's left-turn only, yes, you then cut in front of me, and yes, that's why I honked the horn - because you almost killed yourself. Thanks for flipping me off though, my good deed for the day is saving your life, although I'm not sure why as apparently you don't give a poo poo. Please feel free to upload your little helmet cam to YouTube, complain to the police or a news outlet though. Although I bet you'll go home, have a watch and realise just how close you came to killing yourself and maybe not put your life in stupid amounts of danger again.

I got one from the cyclist POV. I was riding home from work (weather was beautiful and cool, gently caress driving) around 10 PM and came to a 4-way stop. One car beat me, did their thing, and continued on their merry way. As I roll up and stop, I notice an SUV on my left stopped about a length and a half or so back from the sign. I stop and take a look, because I have no clue what this guy is up to, and he just sits and the next car goes. I figure, sure, whatever, and take my turn. As I pass in front of their lane they flash their brights, lay on the horn, and yell something at me as I go past. They then proceed to move up, take their turn at last, and run a red light. I wasn't upset then, I'm not now. I'm just baffled. Why stop for so long? Why flip out? Why do the stop sign lawfully and then run a red? People are strange.

Two lane road. Single lane exit to the right. I saw some old fogey in a chevy subdivision in the right lane indicate right, then merge left while indicating right instead of taking the right exit.

I've had an experience like that. You never know when someone might just be seriously impaired. I was sitting stopped at a light waiting for my turn-left arrow to go green, facing an old lady in an SUV who was doing the same thing in the opposite direction. She started inching forward through the intersection at me, staring directly at me. She just kept inching forward and I started honking my horn at her cause she was getting close to my front end. When I honked, she actually sped up a bit. I was waving my arms like crazy and eventually figured out that honking was making her speed up, so I stopped honking. I had to throw it in reverse and go back a few car lengths, she ended up in or past where I was sitting before. Eventually she stopped and seemed to realize she had passed her turn, but never showed any sign she saw me (dead straight in front of her, our bumpers only a few feet apart). She stared straight ahead at me the whole time. She then indicated right and slowly merged into the traffic that was passing her, cutting off some people who in turn honked at her. I kept on going on my way to work like normal, kinda stunned by the whole thing. In retrospect I wish I had called the police cause that person was clearly either blind or had almost totally lost their cognitive abilities.

Well it happened again this morning, an idiot came to a complete stop where the onramp meets the interstate. Luckily I recognized the classic warning signs (decelerating to 30 mph on the onramp, braking constantly) and had given him plenty of room so I could just go around him and get into the open right lane of the interstate at 60 or so. I looked back and he was still sitting there waiting on a semi that was pretty far away, now with 3 cars sitting behind him. Why.

I was coming off the highway last weekend and a guy in a modified, lowered Camry came to a complete stop in the merge. He was then immediately obliterated by a gently overloaded Ram 3500 that was tailgating him off the road and checking cross-traffic for a merge opportunity. It would be nice to go a full year without having to fill out a witness form for one of these. It's too bad that in my province 100% blame automatically goes to the rear-ending vehicle because as far as I'm concerned the Camry should be buying the Ram a new grille. e: I'm pretty sure I know the guy who owns the Camry, in retrospect. I met him at the paint shop when he was getting it repaired from a rear-ending and I was getting a fender sprayed. Seat Safety Switch fucked around with this message at 16:34 on Nov 19, 2014 |

Seat Safety Switch posted:...I met him at the paint shop when he was getting it repaired from a rear-ending... Gee, I wonder how that happened? The worst is where there is a clear and open merge lane, but NOBODY USES IT. I live near the northern extension of rt 128 in Massachusetts, which is a very old highway with very short or non-existent merge lanes and extremely poor visibility for cars using them. There are however two onramps with generous 1/4 mile or longer merge lanes, and nobody ever uses them. They all get to the end of the ramp and stop to wait for a gap in the travel lane. I guess they're so used to all of the exits with no merge lanes that they don't even see it, but it's crazy.

It's too bad our province is filled with people who have no loving clue how to drive, too. Nearly got hit in a crosswalk again yesterday afternoon. Like, seriously, how does this keep loving happening? Don't turn through a crosswalk if there's someone in it: very simple and logical. I wasn't even trying to cross on the "blinking hand" portion of the signal either (which is a rude, ignorant thing for pedestrians to do).

Apparently it's my fault they have absolutely no idea how to drive on highways and should stick to driveways and surface roads.

I wasn't even trying to cross on the "blinking hand" portion of the signal either (which is a rude, ignorant thing for pedestrians to do). Depends on the timing of the signal. I know of a number of signals locally that will have a two-second "go" for pedestrians when the lights changes - *if* you've hit the ped-crossing-button. (Spokane, WA) Couple of 'em are crossing a 4-lane (plus center turn lane, plus wide goddamn shoulders so 6-lane size) through streets. If the thing goes to blinking red before you can get across the second lane, yeah, I'm not running back to try again next cycle. Way too many rear end in a top hat peds here don't even worry about such things as "signals" or "crosswalks", though, and just wander across wherever/whenever they feel like it. (I do that poo poo too except I make sure traffic is clear first. 'cause I'm an rear end in a top hat, just not *that* kind of rear end in a top hat.)

Out walking the dog the other day and I was nearly taken out by an oblivious woman who was driving a corrolla. The crosswalks around here have orange flags with them that you carry from one end to another. Basically to let others know that you are crossing. So I'm standing at this corner and across the street the cars start to stop for me. Well I cant cross yet because here comes Mrs. Herf Derf who, while looking at me waving the flag in front of her, she just blows on by at 40mph nearly taking me and my dog out. The people across the street were just as shocked as me. gently caress people, pay attention.

I've never heard of such a thing but I can definitely get behind the idea. An anti-car weapon is exactly what I need when crossing the street. They should be made of iron and lead, though. (not being sarcastic)

Heh one day in Indiana (ugh) I waited for the walk sign and as I stepped off the curb this chick comes flying around the corner, didn't stop, didn't look. I jumped out of her path and screamed/yelped at her that she nearly hit me. Her response? She turned around in her seat and flashed the peace sign at me and kept driving.

Oh yeah, I specifically meant people who will enter the crosswalk when the hand is flashing -- the flashing hand means that you should continue to cross if in the crosswalk, but are not to start crossing. A moot point, as in this case, I had both entered the crosswalk with the walk sign displayed, and almost been hit while it was still active.

One of my "stuck in bumper to bumper traffic" daydreams has long been some kind of laser etching system that allows me to write warnings into the fenders of people driving like idiots. Paint seems like a safer, less destructive option. But usually safe and non-damaging is not something I'm interested in during rush hour.

The problem is subtlety. Nearby drivers are gonna identify you really fast if a paintball spews from your grille. Even if they fail to notice that, the collection of police reports along your daily commute will tell them exactly where to look for the offender. Then it's just a matter of time.
