I guess the one flaw in my argument is you'd have to prove a definite link between the naked use of "indigenous" and "aboriginal" as derogatory terms in australia when people are usually a lot more up front and will just call them coons or whatever but its still pretty lovely when a group of people ask you to use a term or NOT use a term for them and you just do it anyway because you think language isn't actually a tool for oppression in anyway

MC Eating Disorder posted:Because in the one specific context I mentioned, cultural issues mean that appropriating an adjective as a noun is really problematic, which is my point. If you think the problem with "A chinese" is that its ungrammatical, you're a loving moron. People said that for YEARS and now they don't. Guess why. I've never heard of "A Chinese" even in a historical context. Do you mean 'A chinaman'? I dunno, I really don't think it's problematic, and making the language to describe this stuff really complicated and criticising anyone who doesn't get it right is pointless, and makes understanding the issue inaccessible. Like, of all the issues to get hung up on, "this adjective is dehumanising" is not one that really matters. I'm going to get called out on this, but I don't care. It's silly and has gently caress all relevance to the actual issues. While we debate whether we can say indigenous or aboriginal, awful idiots just say 'boongas' and vote for people who continue to steal their children, imprison them without charge, and gently caress them over in any way possible. cool I'm glad we agree but its still a dick move to not call people by their preferred names A/D? I mean its not like you have to call every aboriginal person "first people" or whatever, the guys sleeping on the street in Fortitude Valley don't give a poo poo about this but like, its nice to just have some awareness of these issues when you're talking to educated aboriginal people because this poo poo is a very big part of their identity and its such a pointless thing to take a stand against

And yes, several aboriginal people I know object to the naked use of both terms. I don't know how widespread it is but I really like "first people" anyway and it defuses that dumb loving Andrew Bolt argument about how he's totally loving indigenous and makes secret racists almost immediately out themselves

Fruity Gordo posted:No mention of her stellar performance litigating asbestos victims to death, way to overlook her accomplishments fairfax. It gives it a quick mention quote:"If Julie struggled personally when her marriage collapsed, she had to dig even deeper to win a ticket to Canberra. Career triumphs in Perth quickly mirrored the success she'd had in Adelaide; by the time she was 30, she was one of Perth's most impressive litigators with a "take-no-prisoners" approach that got her noticed. She represented mining and industrial giant CSR, which opposed compensation claims from some workers who were dying of asbestos-related illnesses. (Bishop has been targeted by Labor on this point, but has consistently denied the claim, saying she acted ethically and professionally in accordance with client instructions.) She also acted for Burswood Casino and its founder, Dallas Dempster, in the 1990-92 "WA Inc" royal commission, a long-reaching political scandal that prompted her, ultimately, to sign up with the Liberal Party. "I thought WA deserved a lot better than we had received from Labor governments," she says. hmmm yes denying asbestos victims a loving pittance from a multi national corporation is totally ethical you slimy poo poo bag I like to murder homeless people but it's not a crime because technically they don't exist.

Mithranderp posted:I (relatively) recently learned about the history behind all the "Boundary Road"s in Brisbane, i.e. that they represented the boundary which indigenous people were not allowed to cross after a certain time. I'm assuming that similar poo poo happened in other towns/cities. While that definitely doesn't represent the WORST of our appalling treatment of our first people, it's certainly shameful to think about. Part of me would like to see a name change (idk what to, but something that maybe wasn't used to exclude people from their own loving ancestral land) but then again the only reason I even know about the curfew thing is because I was like "boundary? boundary of what?" and googled that poo poo, so in a way, changing the names of those roads could be a form of whitewashing the past and pretending that we didn't do poo poo like that. I just had this conversation with my husband. Me: "Hey, you know how Brisbane has a few places called Boundary Rd?" Him: "Yup" Me: "Do you know why they're named that?" Him: "Uh oh... is it something good?" Me: "Noooopppppeeeeee" Him: *sigh* "Something boundarying black people from the white people?" Me: "Yuuuuuupppppppppp"

Eyespy posted:From a few pages back, but is there any easy way to debunk this horseshit? One of my co-workers will not shut up about it. Its cheap and easy to get halal cert for products unrelated to halal regulations. Its not like 1c per pot bought goes to halal regulators, its a matter of a couple hundred to certify each product each year. In other words, even if they are making money off it, they're making gently caress all after all the operating costs of a regulatory body. The issue as of late is that Indonesian authorities are accusing Australian regulators of lowering the price, making it too cheap for others to compete, and to quote a news.com.au article, they should be contributing to funding Muslim schools and mosques. Unfortunately when you are donating your profits out to religious institutions, it becomes hard to prove where the money ends up either way. But, it does imply that funds raised by halal Australia certified products are not generating funds for other religious institutions.

Laserface posted:I thought you guys didnt like gendered insults? If it helps you understand, the basic tenants are punch up not down. In this case "dick" is a male gendered insult and as the male of the species is at the top of the pecking order because of the patriarchy this means it's fair game to use as an insult. It can be used affectionately or, as in this case, to let someone know that they're being a dickhead. One could not acceptably call you a vaginahead because that would involve people from a privileged class making light of a class that is traditionally downtrodden and abused in the current societal norms.

Honestly I prefer to be called Fuckwit because dickhead reminds me of the struggle of my people. I appreciate the people in this thread that post articles and facts as its a great way to keep in the loop with regards to politics. You made me a greens voter so you should be happy that you got another person out of the "my dad votes X so I'll vote X" club. You guys seem to get way more upset about the fact that you might upset someone than actually offending someone. Its sort of dumb.
