wolrah posted:Borrowed from the Mustang thread, but it's pretty awesome anyways. Just to highlight this since the Hoonistang overshadows it, but a 5.2L with a flat plane crank is an unreal bit of engineering. I'm pretty sure that's the largest flat plane crank engine ever built. American cars are really on another level the past few years. There might be some absolute poo poo being built, but when we do a car right now, it's a world beater in every sense of the term.

Sweet Christmas that Hoonicorn tape man. The low rider bit had me laughing at my TV and I had to start the whole thing again once I composed myself. Ken Block rules and the Hoonicorn is my new favorite vehicle ever built. It's the end of the loving world on wheels.

I don't understand that Ken Block vid, why is he wearing an open face helmet and then goggles? Why not just a full face helmet? EDIT: I suppose his company probably sells goggles or something?

Most rally drivers wear an open face helmet. I assume it's for peripheral vision. The goggles are probably marketing.

I started laughing pretty much as soon as it lit up the tires and didn't stop until it was done, what an absolute riot of a vehicle.

What does a rally driver need peripheral vision for? In case a tree sneaks up behind him unoticed? Seems like of all people they would need it the least. Just to be clear I realize there are probably other reasons that rally drivers wear open face helmets, my point is that they don't then wear goggles on top of them.

While the stunts in this video may not be as crazy as some of the ones in previous gymkhanas (except that lowrider madness) that car is unbelievable. I wonder how many sets of tires they sacrificed making that video. With the way that monster burns them up I feel like every cut must have included a tire change. That has to be the most savage car I've ever seen.

Preoptopus posted:I wanna know just how much renting out the LAPD for a day costs. Anyone want a Monster after watching that? Those cars were production props, so about $275-350 per car, per day. They still had actual police presence for street closures, but not as many as the video depicted; it was still awesome for effect though.

I think the Hoonicorn quite easily offset all the hybrid and EVs in Los Angeles in both emissions and tire wear alone that day.

I've seen, heard and felt that engine in real life, it's very imposing. Back in 2004 (IIRC), they used it to basically kickstart the entire electrical grid of the greater Copenhagen area after a massive outage. They had to start it on dry bearings as the pre-oiler runs on electricity. But it handled everything like a champ. Not bad for an engine built in 1932. Let me just post up this picture I took while I was there: KozmoNaut fucked around with this message at 20:21 on Nov 18, 2014 |
