The main factor which determines which side of this debate you fall on is if you hear a story like "this black guy attacked a cop for no reason at all" and your initial reaction is yeah, I find that a believable story. Black people ARE violent by nature.

Black people really don't need white people to give them the OK to combat racism, same as women don't need men's OK to combat misogyny. I mean, let's face it, there will never be a victim sympathetic enough for white people to genuinely go "oh, poo poo! Wow, that's bad, yeah, let's just stop being racist now" or demand some sort of structural change because by and large they don't have to deal with structural racism like black people do. Even the crazy-rear end white libertarians who manage to identify that police brutality is a huge loving problem are rather quiet when they're faced with riots or civil unrest by predominately black crowds (funny how that works).

No one was hit. The bullet went into a wall with an empty room on the other side. “They did all they could to retrain him as soon as they could,” Shumway said. “He had what appears to be superhuman strength.” The officers used Tasers on Leone seven times during the fight, but they had no effect. Shumway said Leone appeared to be unable to feel pain. He was speaking gibberish and acting like he was on drugs. “Somebody could have been killed from this. This could have been a real tragedy,” Shumway said. One officer involved in the struggle suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to the hospital. Leone faces charges including assaulting a public safety officer, unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest. Police took Leone to the Washington County Jail. Leone is from the Seattle area, but he graduated from Vernonia High School, Shumway said. Bruce McCain, a former Multnomah County Sheriff's captain, told KATU News that a big concern is about the officer's holster. "The whole idea is if you're in a scuffle, you cannot pull this gun out – even if you popped the top, this does not come out," he said, demonstrating on his old holster with an unloaded Glock. (watch the video) He says holsters are typically designed with three security mechanisms to keep anyone from grabbing the gun. The Beaverton sergeant's holster may have had only two safety features because his gun may have had a flashlight on it.

Even if what Wilson did is legally just, many people would prefer that he hadn't and if he had to in order to protect his life, that he be held accountable for it in some way. People are and other have tried and became disillusioned. Police corruption is real, and sometimes not having done anything is not enough to save you from that. If you have not been subject to police discrimination, there are quite a few people who would consider your experiences to abnormal.
