Technically, I suppose I'm asking for a Fallout 3 mod, but I imagine there would be a New Vegas version, too. Is there any mod that let's you swap the appearance and stats between armors? I remember being so sick of the Ranger combat armor when I was playing the console version and wishing I could mod it so it looked less generic. I can't seem to find anything for this in Nexus, and I figured it would be a very popular mod.

I don't know if it'll be the sort of style you're looking for, but I made a Reilly's Rangers variant for the DTO Bonus Pack ages ago. It doesn't replace the Ranger armour itself, though someone must have done that at some point. Maybe FOOK2? I know it uses DTO stuff in a few places.

As a more general thing, there's no simple way to switch the appearance of armour while keeping its stats in the way you describe, no.

I did grab a mod for FNV at one point that automatically gave you DT based on your level, unless you were wearing armour with more DT than that. So you could wear whatever you want and still be protected like you were wearing 'level appropriate' armour.

Do you want to be able to swap armor appearance on the fly in game, or would you just like a permanent appearance change to the ranger armor/a new armor with the ranger armors stats?

Fiddling with or creating new armor is actually a good little intro into learning the GECK... You make a copy of the ranger armor, point it to the .nif file of whatever you want your new armor to look like (this can be one that exists in game already or something you grab from another mod) and then figure out how to place it in game. It's not as easy as it sounds, but it isn't rocket science.

Alternately, find a mod with a new armor that you like the looks of, then open it up in the GECK next to the ranger armor and change the stats to match.

So, what's that machine race mod (I know it's in the OP, but can't find it for the life of me :downs:), and does it play well with other mods? (Especially Project Nevada and TTW?)

The only issue with TTW is it makes the 'growing up' segment and the one mission you regress to being a kid crash. You have to create a regular character and change when it asks you to respec when you go into the wasteland or download a save for that point.

I can deal with that. I wanted to poke around in FO3's guts a little anyway. Thanks.

Edit:
Okay, where are the dang .NIF files supposed to be, anyway? I'm looking at the file path that the GECK gives for any armor's biped model, but the only files in the actual directories are the world models. I guess that I need to somehow browse the BSA files, too, but I don't know how.

Double Edit:
I extract the individual meshes and textures I want from the BSA files into the Data directory?

I own a hard copy of Fallout 3 and ended up purchasing most of the DLC on the Microsoft Live platform back in '09 or so. The DVD ended up in storage somewhere and the DLC are tethered to Live, so I've basically abandoned any attempt to try out TTW until I (possibly) pick up the GOTY edition during the holiday Steam sale when it's up for $5 or so. Still, it's pretty remarkable how modders were able to pull off merging these two games together, and its existence is essentially the only reason I would ever seriously consider reinstalling FO3.

Sometimes I have a weird craving to go back to the Capital Wasteland, though. There's something about that green-tinged urban sprawl that I miss in NV.

I actually think the sewers/subway are great fun, especially with Mart's Monster Mod.

TTW is way more stable, though.

e: is there a more basic/simplified version of Increased Wasteland Spawns at all? Even the latest version has a memory/script leak issue that makes my game crash with it enabled.

Without, I don't get bloat/etc.

And despite that, it is thanks to that author that you don't have to root through morally questionable mods to get a morally neutral mod that ultimately does the exact same thing. Sounds like someone is just taking a good idea and re-purposing it to be equally useful for lawful bounty-hunters as much as it might be useful for evil bandits. For all we know, the only reason the author is aware of those mods is because said author asked the community if there were any mods which already did X.

I had a similar thought. And then it reminded me of the last time I played Arcanum. I collected all the companion NPCs, took them to a room in the sewer under the main city, and stripped them of all items and told them to wait there. It was my people storage room.

How would I go about changing powder ganger guard armor into non faction armor? I really like the look of the stuff, but being disguised as a powder ganger is pretty annoying. How do I access the Project Nevada menu in-game? I could have sworn there was a pipboy option somewhere to do so, for checking your cybernetics and such, but I can't find it. The FAQ for it says to hold "P" but that did nothing when I tried it. I know I'm probably missing something obvious, I'm just getting back into the game after a long hiatus.

Yea they do, but you need cybersurgery to see the actual implants, pop them out to upgrade them and pop them back in.

Man I wish there was a mod that would alter the PC's appearance as s/he augmented their body with implants. I just finished playing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel a few weeks ago, and one of the classes changes appearance as he modifies his body.

Actually, I know there are a couple of mods that add cosmetic implants, but the first one (which is competently done, even if it only encompasses two or three pieces) doesn't really have anything to do with the vanilla implant system, and the second one is a really poorly done series of textures for a barbie doll custom body type.

Okay, for those of us that use ENB (I just use it for ENBoost), I created a little batch file that automatically starts ENBInjector.exe, then Fallout, then closes ENBInjector.exe when fallout exits.

code:
echo off
start ENBInjector.exe
timeout /t 1 /nobreak
FNV4GB.exe
taskkill /IM ENBInjector.exe
exit
Cust cut and paste that, save as a .bat file in the New Vegas directory, and run it when you want to run New Vegas.

I picked this up during the Steam sale, but it doesn't work :(

Game launches just fine, plays the intro movie, then goes to a black screen and crashes to desktop.

Can someone offer some advice?

OK new question: I have jsawyer installed and nothing else because the readme says it probably doesn't play nice with other stuff.

I don't really want other stuff anyway (the thing I was most jealous about when playing on 360 was this particular mod), but it would be nice to have a prettier wasteland. Which of the weather/skies/etc. mods should I grab if I don't want to conflict with jsawyer?

e: I have no idea why I made a second post instead of editing the previous; sorry.

jsawyer plays just fine with lots of other mods, read the OP for a great list of mods that will beautify the game; to start with though, pick up a lighting mod, a sky-box/weather mod, and the better textures mod if your machine can handle it - along with the various game-improvement stuff (stutter remover, etc.)

I recommend not getting a lighting mod. Just causes more problems then it solves. Besides, you probably won't even notice the changes. NMC's textures are the ones you want, he has many various kinds for various systems. Graphics mods do not interact with gameplay mods, ideally. You should just be putting texture files into a folder, not running anymore .ESPs. You were correct by installing jsawyer, by the way.

Yeah, I run JSawyer.esp with about half a million various mods. JSawyer.esp sort of serves as the "base" of my modding--it sits early in the load order, so the few subsequent mods that make changes to the same things will take precedent--but 90 or 95% of the things it does still affect the resulting gameplay.

Personally, I really enjoy the Interior Lighting Overhaul (ILO). I like how it makes caves and abandoned interiors really dark and moody, and gives you a reason to use Cateye, night vision, the PipBoy Light, light sticks, flares, whatever. Your mileage may vary, though.

The problem with lighting mods, is it makes substantial changes to the cells, which pretty much means conflicts with just about everything. When it comes to modding, they're more trouble than they are worth.

Additionally, the engine is really only designed to handle so many lights, and once you start exceeding that, you get strange artifacts where lights JUST barely off screen will stop working, or you will get strange flickers, etc. As much as I love them as well, they simply cause more trouble in the long run.

I understand what you're saying, but I've currently got about 113 plugins right now and the only significant thing ILO conflicts with is the community patch, where the patch attempts to correct something random like the "water level" in a cell without water--this has basically been my same experience with numerous other installs across FO3 and NV. "Everything" is honestly a very strong word. Nor have I had the other problem you're describing.

So again, your mileage may vary.
