Is there any reason to get "Stanley Kubrick: The Masterpiece Collection" over "Stanley Kubrick: Visionary Filmmaker Collection"? From what I can tell, the Masterpiece collection includes Dr. Strangelove (which I already have on Blu), and a bunch more extras (which I don't really care about). Plus the Masterpiece collection is about $140 more expensive. Are the transfers for both collections the same? The only hesitation I have about getting the Visionary Collection is that it has the shorter international cut of The Shining, which is something I only found out existed 5 minutes ago. I've seen the longer cut of the Shining before, but I don't remember it well enough that I'm likely to notice the cuts. Plus, the internet tells me that Kubrick preferred the shorter cut anyway - is there any truth to that? Is the UK cut generally considered better?

I honestly don't think I've ever seen a source on Kubrick preferring the international version.

I recently bought the Visionary Collection and was very pleased. It's a great deal. It's a shame there's no Dr. Strangelove, but the set is a the best value regardless. And speaking of Strangelove, it looks like it's coming back into print, available at Best Buy with some unusual cover art: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dr-stra..._2UY4Ji8093ZrsQ wa27 fucked around with this message at 17:28 on Nov 19, 2014 |

Is that the only Kubrick that's been updated lately? I remember the Shining transfer looking pretty blah, too. If they came out with a bunch of shiny new transfer discs I'd have to quintuple-dip.

Spartacus will probably be, too, since Universal usually scans in 6K/8K and does everything at 4K now. I've read the 2001 DCP is only 2K, which is kind of useless. 65mm films need no less than an 8K scan with a 4K workflow for restoration/remastering.

There was also the "Stanley Kubrick: Limited Edition Collection", which was basically the US version of the Visionary Collection, with similar packaging. I picked up a few at Walmart for their Black Friday sale. Just casually walked in around 4 PM Friday and picked them up. Got Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Rises, 12 Years A Slave, and Gravity. On her own adventures mom found Godzilla for me since Walmart was out. Just watched Gravity and god drat what a ride, I really wish I had seen that in theaters. Might watch 12 Years A Slave now but am unsure if I can handle that much this late. It's been a long time since I could sit down and enjoy a movie so this has been cathartic.

It's probably the same transfer, but you can bet Criterion has the better encode and overall mastering. And the price difference is worth it just to avoid Universal's awful menus.
