I've already heard ads for a Chicago curling league, so hopefully this is the start of a boom like early-2000s poker

It's like watching golf. It's loving boring but there's short bursts you can pay attention to and it looks pretty in HD.

It's in the five-hole!
I have literally never watched more than a 3 second clip of curling, and I don't plan to change that. If we are importing Canadian sports, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the chuckwagon races from the Calgary Stampede on national tv. Sure watching that stuff led to a 12 year old me seeing a dude crushed to death, but it probably built character or some such.

Curling is some kind of evil Canadian brain virus. Like, at first it's just on so you have some background noise while doing something else, but as the hours pass you get sucked in more and more. It's amazing.

Darts should loving suck to watch on TV but that English Premier Darts has a bunch of fat fuckers drunk as poo poo in a huge arena while other fat drunk dudes throw darts and everyone goes crazy and it owns.

Also they had that announcer who was so excitable he made it seem like the greatest thing

It's amazing what good announcers do. I got REALLY into that stupid bike Olympic event where two guys peddle REALLY slow until one decides to gun it, mostly because the announcers would go apeshit when someone exploded off the back.

Curling is one of those things that's fun to get into every 4 years but I couldn't imagine actually watching it regularly.

Same with every Olympic sport, really. Luge and biathalon and poo poo like that kinda lose their charm when you're watching it all the time and actually know what's going on.

I thought this until I got the universal sports channel and now I'm oddly obsessed with alpine skiing.

I love it, but I used to ski competitively, so yeah. Not quite the same amount of fun as watching ski porn a la old Warren Miller, but it's up there.

Also after further review it seems to be US online-only coverage

I played one winter just for something to keep in shape, and the coach was, like, 100% sure a bunch of Minnesota guys who never played the sport before would be in the Olympics. Then I rolled an ankle because holy poo poo is that game basically all running jump-stops.

Yeah

No reason to do coverage outside of the US. Canada already gets streaming and VOD curling coverage through regular cable subscriptions that have TSN.

Streaming the Scotties and the Brier is really awesome.

Also Vic Rauter might be the best pbp broadcaster that isn't Vin Scully. He's just the Canadianest.

They do play in October!
The fact that I can now watch TSN's coverage of major Canadian curling events on my TV in my American living room using a Chromecast (or any other way of beaming WatchESPN to my TV) means this is a great time to be alive.

Full disclosure: I'm an active curler, so I suppose it's possible that non-curlers may not be as excited

Redgrendel2001

you literally think a person saying their NBA team of choice being better than the fucking 76ers is a 'schtick'

a literal thing you think.

Curling is basically an excuse for fans and players to both drink before, during, and after a match.

It's basically Canadian NASCAR.

I can get down with something where you get drunk and do stuff without being too invested in the results but still have fun. I could see curling being like casual (important distinction there) rec league softball or something.

Basically, get shitfaced, do something even slightly physical, enjoy the camaraderie.

edit: basically like a circle jerk except you can still make eye contact with people afterwards.
