Anyone going through the archives, who's the guy calling in with all the characters like the fella who got promoted to office manager and the British record promoter and Vanilla "Hotbox" Grits? I think I know the voice, but I can't place it. He's, uhhhhh, okay.

Tom used to have a bigger cast of callers, including Matt Walsh & H. Jon Benjamin, who are both pretty huge comedians now. He gave an interview once where he said Wurster was clearly putting in more work than anyone else, so it just became the two of them.

I think Tom had Andrew Earles on a few years later to promote his book.

What I do is sometimes get a tin of soup, heat it up, poach an egg in it, serve that with a pork pie sausage roll.
Earles is a really funny guy. He just put out a new book about 80s-90s indie.

He and Jeffrey Jensen put out a great prank call album on Matador around the time that "Art of the Slap" came out.

There are some shared music nerd sensibilities. I think Jeff Jensen runs a food truck.

Some of the Matt Walsh calls were hilarious. I remember one where he was pugging a movie he had a bit part in and pretending he was the star that was really good.

Ninety-one? There are ninety other "Tiger Drivers"? Do any involve actual tigers, or driving?
My favorite is the one where he calls to promote a special called Matt Walsh Goes To Hawaii and it slowly comes out that they shot the whole thing on a soundstage. Then Horatio Sanz calls and says he's gonna sue him if he doesn't get cut out and Benjamin calls as a guy who just reads IMDB stuff of various people for like 20 minutes. It's super great.

The Walsh & Benjamin bits are easily what I miss the most in later episodes.

I'm listening to Jon Benjamin's Smirnoff Ice call right now. Good stuff.

The previous episode had a two hour call with a Nostradamus scholar. I kept waiting for the punchline, but it never came...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I've heard him on Coast to Coast. I just meant more that I thought Tom would try to sneak some more cuties into the mix, like his interviews with Uncle Luke and Kevin Smith. But nope, aside from a tanked Wurster call and another possibly set up call by a guy with an Adam Sandler voice, it was a two hour interview with some dork Nostradamus expert.

There were a couple of interesting parts, but it was mostly Tom listening to the dude drone on and on.

The Smirnoff Ice call is one I've used sort of as a gateway since it's one of the most accessible ones, but it's sort of problematic in that people go "yeah, that was great" but Wurster's (which I love, of course) are so often reliant on the tropes of the show, which you sort of have to get familiar with to fully appreciate.

Tom spoke with the New York Times about the revival:

He's also doing some podcast rounds. I'm listening to him on Todd Barry's podcast right now: http://www.feralaudio.com/74-tom-scharpling/

He talks about the show a bunch, and what he expects the format for the new show to be like (pretty much the same thing, done independently, also trying to bring it out to live shows more often, if possible).

He's also been on the Sidestreets podcast, which I've never heard of: http://sidestreetspodcast.tumblr.com/post/104073222942/episode-041-the-chump-steamroller-with-tom

and was apparently on Keith and the Girl today as well.
