Hey goons, I just bought a Wii U and I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the N64. I bought it solely for local multiplayer with my roommates. It just came with the 1 gamepad tablet controller thing. What else do I need to buy? I was told there's some sort of controller adapter, but I can't seem to find an answer if I need that just to use the old Gamecube controllers, or if I'd need it for the 'regular' Wii remote / nunchuck attachment. I just grabbed Smash and Mario Kart, and I'll grab the new Mario Party when it comes out... What else is available for excellent local co-op / multiplayer?

Katana Gomai posted:OK I seriously don't get the hype for Captain Toad, the levels in SM3DW were adorable to look at but in terms of gameplay they were boring filler garbage. I played the demo of Captain Toad at Gamescom and those levels pretty much solved themselves, too. I'll get it whenever it drops below 20€ because it is adorable as gently caress, but there's hardly any game behind it and I am continously baffled as to why it's held in such high regard. Those levels in SM3DW are the "3D Land" to Captain Toad: The Game. Beyond the first 2 or 3 levels, Treasure Tracker starts showing a lot more substance, and also starts implementing stage hazards and gimmicks from 3D World (the falling donut platforms, speed boosts, haunted mansion levels, etc.) I agree that $40 may be the wrong price point, and I also agree that it's adorable as gently caress.

Your controller options are: the Wii U Pro controller, it's a fantastic wireless controller with a battery life of 50+ hours. Wii remotes + nunchuck, I can't in good faith recommend this option. Wii remotes + classic controllers, the classic controller is a nice controller that plugs into the Wiimote. You ignore the Wiimote and only use it to power the classic controller. The pro controller will run you $50 a pop but it's the nicest loving thing in the world to use to play video games. I can't comment on the cost of the other options. You're on the right path with Smash and Mario Kart. I've enjoyed playing New Super Mario Bros U and Mario 3D World while co-oping with my girlfriend. It's also my understanding Nintendoland is a blast, especially the ghost/flashlight game in it. I haven't played it but I've heard lots of excellent things about it.

You want pro controllers, maybe wiimotes+nunchucks if you have any interest in wii games. The gamecube adapter only works with Super Smash Bros and is designed for the 8 player smash mode and obsessive nerds, and no you don't need it for wiimote stuff. Also games-wise definitely look into Rayman Legends and Mario 3D World

Smash and Mario Kart have the excellent properties of being able to use pretty much any controller you throw at them any combination of: WiiU Tablet Controller (Comes with system, only one can be used at a time, replacements only available through Nintendo) Wii Remote/Wii Remote Plus (Some games require plus, Smash and Kart do not) Wii Nunchuck (plugs into Wii Remote/Wii Remote Plus and goes in your other hand) Wii Classic Controller/Classic Controller Pro (Plugs into Wii Remote/Wii Remote Plus, but is shaped like a traditional controller and only uses the remote as a connection) WiiU Pro Controller (Excellent stand alone controller with fantastic battery life, probably the most expensive option though) Gamecube Controllers with the Gamecube Controller Adapter (Currently only works with Smash, support for Kart is supposedly being added in an update, Adapter is currently very hard to find) And it'll work. I definitely recommend a WiiU Pro, It'll work with most other games on the system, but any the above work fine.

Mario 3D World is great for local co-op and an awesome game in general. For anyone. I've been playing games forever and I'm having a blast, it's easily one of the best Mario titles ever. In contrast, it's literally my girlfriend's first game ever and she loves it. The co-op works really well even with our disparate skill levels. New Super Mario U isn't as inspired and people have mixed feelings about it, but I think it's a really good platformer with a nicely balanced challenge. Co-op is a little more frustrating if you're not at the same skill level, since 2d platforming involves getting In each other's way more often. Finally, Nintendoland is cheap and has some great co-op and competitive games. Its status as a "launch title minigame collection" might seem offputting but it's a ton of fun in groups.

Hell yeah they are. I've been trying to find used copies of things here and there, but eBay is absolutely insane. Pikmin 3 copies are still like $45-50 used, New Mario U is ~$35+shipping used, etc. People are literally paying nearly what they're going for on Amazon/other retailers for new, sometimes more than if they had bought them on sale.

I think even Club Nintendo free downloads count too. You just log into the Digital Deluxe Promotion site using your Nintendo Network ID and as you make purchases you earn points which can be redeemed for a code that can be entered in the eShop which adds 5 bucks to your wallet. Thanks for this, I forgot that the DDP site existed. Now I have to decide how to use $30 of store credit.

It's not an exclusive but Rayman Legends is an excellent platformer. It also has a fun multiplayer set of options too, that are a bit less anger-inducing than New super mario U.

What's the correct way to turn off controllers? Sometimes someone will accidentally nudge the joystick while pressing A and it ends up loving up the menus for any game we're playing. You can't really turn the controller off without turning the entire console off.

That will disconnect and reconnect everyone.

Hi thread, please don't take this the wrong way because I intend to get a refurb Wii U and several first-party games... but I want to play devil's advocate: Why should anyone drop the money on a system where the best offerings only happen to be the newest, shiniest versions of Mario, Zelda, and more Mario? Pretend this is in a vacuum where Wii U would be the only system, console or otherwise, purchased. ------ AGAIN, I'll stress that I've been following this thread for a long time and the posters within all seem to be friendly, helpful, and patient in regards to pre-converts asking questions. I want to play all the Marios and Zeldas forever. Bayonetta too, maybe...

The best games to play on Nintendo systems tend to be stuff put out directly by Nintendo and has been for quite a while. That said, Nintendo's first party stuff are all excellent games that are super polished and super full of charm. Also if you like action games, the Wii U has three fantastic ones to choose from; Bayonetta, as you mentioned, The Wonderful 101, also from Platinum and absolutely wonderful, and Hyrule Warriors.

Being in the Mario IP doesn't mean the games are identical.

mamelon posted:Hi thread, please don't take this the wrong way because I intend to get a refurb Wii U and several first-party games... but I want to play devil's advocate: Because those games are very good and reliable in quality. There is hardly ever the disappointment in those titles like with what happened with AC Unity. Like, if you want to boil down Nintendo systems to just Mario and Zelda, what is there on other systems? Call of Duty, Madden, and more call of duty? What does the Xbox one have besides halo or sunset overdrive? If you don't care about sports games or FPS, then Wii U is gonna meet your needs and then some. There are plenty of good games on Wii U, and for me personally there are more exclusives I'm interested in playing on it than the other two systems. (Honestly even counting non exclusives there are more games that I personally want to play on wii u than elsewhere). Short version, "because it has the games a person buying it would want to play." Same reason we all purchase any console we do.

As someone who doesnt have a gaming pc and doesn't want to play stuff on a 2 year old laptop, there's also a good amount of indie titles on the WiiU eShop. I am planning on grabbing a bunch of eShop points cards this holiday and buying at least half a dozen titles before the DDP ends.

Honestly you'd be better off on PlayStation for indies. The wii u is great for first party stuff, but I find the eshop to be pretty lacking in general. Of course, the one true path to gaming ambrosia is a Wii U and a PC that can run videogames.
