Well I have enjoyed reading this thread and witnessing some of the terrible, so bad it's good and the just plain wrong contained within. Here is a selection of my output from the 1990's that I just dug out of storage at my parents house. Turns out 90's me was a (mostly) neater painter than I feared but drat did I have a thing for bright colours!

Realtalk: I had a chat to a guy that worked in a GW store until quite recently and heard some pretty interesting stuff. Downright indoctrination of the staff to hit sales targets being one, a limit per-quarter on the amount of stuff they would claim their staff discount on, and they apparently even have people writing out lines if they make a mistake. poo poo, I haven't had to do that since primary school Oh, and staff discount is 50% off. That's a looooot of markup for plastic dudes. I only just met the guy so I can't verify if he was bullshitting me or not, so there may be some exaggerations in there.

Discount hasn't been 50% for a long time. Not for sales personnel anyway. Far as I know you'd need to be a legacy to still get that. As for sales targets, well yeah, it's a business.

HiveCommander posted:Oh, and staff discount is 50% off. That's a looooot of markup for plastic dudes. 100% markup is standard for miniatures. (So RRP = 2xCost). The standard distributor discount is at least 40-45% off RRP so even with that massive markup many companies don't earn all that much per sale.

This pack of beauties was selling for 235 yen (2 bucks or so) or something, with shipping inflating costs ten times. That's some termies, 6 bikes and two squads of dudes. And no bids. Figures I'd leave home (and credit card) the day when I find bulk used marine offers (they'd be good, because it wouldn't hurt as much if I hosed up stripping and customizing). Oh well

In the interest of less nazi chat and more bad painting pictures lets dig back into my old warhammer box and have a look at what I painted between the ages of 8 and 15. As far as I can remember this is in chronological order. My First Shield My Second Shield (Dad helped with this one) Top half of a bolt thrower (bottom half never painted) Spearmen. Archers Color Schemes. Painting's a little better, but still very thick. Very blonde horse. Later Archers. Thinned some paints this time. Still too many colours. Also, Juve 15: Andy Later horses, less blonde. Group Shot.

They look like they are from a group of well meaning but stupid bunch of robotic adventurers, attempting to disguise themselves as Tau by balancing the heads of dead soldiers on their heads... So many of these bad models seem to have a story behind them....

Would anyone here mind if I linked some of the funnier things that have been painted here by goons in the stickied thread over in Games that showcases creative stuff gaming goons (plus subforums) have done in 2014? There are some great things posted here; the angry little dude on page one is amazing. How much of this stuff is done by goons and how much from offsite?

Helldump used to be a sub-forum devoted to reposting and ridiculing stupid poo poo goons said from within the forums. It actively made the site worse. Instead of the most toxic elements getting called out and refuted, they were passively-aggressively mocked behind their back in a sub-basement by a clique of mean girls. Today it mostly refers to bringing in someone's out-of-thread comments. Quoting someone's AI posts with "Well look how dumb you are about cars!" in D&D, for example. But making fun of someone (or their models, I guess) from the safety of a thread they likely aren't reading is just bad form.
