He dropped over a grand on a new hobby? Whatever it is, he has probably only done it 5 times so far. He will be sick of the hobby before he does it 20 times, and then the equipment will be given away or sit in storage somewhere. It's not a hobby unless you do it often. Dont buy expensive equipment for something you have only done twice.

Through some Internet stream of consciousness, I arrived at the conclusion that SloMo has decided to join the Escorts Rating Service. He's paying $300 for a call girl to visit him, and then he goes online and rates/compares/contrasts. Once a week for four weeks, $1200.

It's got to be photography. If you want to be extremely boring and extremely pretentious and spend a lot of money doing it, in Seattle, you take up photography and take lots of boring pictures of the sunset to put on facebook. edit: calling now that first photo posted will be a sunset cityscape taken from kerry park

I think SloMo is the kind of guy to get seriously into model trains ironically. Don't forget the imitation crab meat. Re the SloMo vs Knyteguy thing. I also see a lot of the hate directed at SloMo is jealousy related. Especially when you see all the "I'm barely making ends meet and my overall budget is less than your rent." type of crap coming from non BFC regulars. Most of the BFC regulars seem to have better directed issues with him and his habits. Also people seem to want to berate SloMo because it makes them feel better about themselves and the people berating KnyteGuy seem to do so because they genuinely want him to improve.

Tanning in Seattle can be a reasonable thing to pay for, assuming the purchaser is using it more for light therapy than for getting bronzed.

But your actions make it clear you don't actually care that much about removing your debt. It's literally last on your list of things you do when you go through the month. But if you're happy, then congratulations I guess. You certainly had to deal with a lot of lovely stuff in the past, it's just frustrating when you could do so much better and achieve your stated goals so much faster. The reactions to his attitude are unsurprising.

His hobbies are stupid and he doesn't appear to be getting any enjoyment or value out of them, except maybe from the idea that now he can smugly tick of whatever's on his list of "things important people do". He has a serious spending problem (spending $2000 more than your salary in a month, without having planned for it in advance or having an emergency come up, is a pretty big loving problem) and is in denial about it, then gets defensive whenever people call him out on it.

Bloody Queef posted:I think SloMo is the kind of guy to get seriously into model trains ironically. Don't forget the imitation crab meat. I think it's more that SlowMo has no loving excuse. He's not chained to a house, he doesn't have a baby on the way, he doesn't have a wife pressuring him like Zaurg did. When you make as much as he does and have as few real financial obligations as he does, it takes real effort to put yourself in the red each month. Yet not only does he do so pretty consistently, but it's always on the stupidest most useless poo poo possible, like blowing hundreds of dollars on opera tickets, drugs, tanning, or alcohol. He is just straight-up unable or unwilling to restrain his spending, and the only reason he's making even a little bit of progress is that he gets paid so drat much that even if he busts his budget each month, he still has a chance of overspending by less than his budget is going to be. The other thing is his lack of real progress on things that he said he was going to do, or that the thread advised him to do. The only advice he's really followed that I can think of is cutting back on travel and selling those drugs he bought. He never sold that car, for example, despite the fact that he was saying for months he was going to do so, he poured a bunch of money into it claiming he was just getting it ready to sell, and he buys a bus pass and blows at least a hundred bucks on Uber rides every month. And while it's easy to focus in on the hobby and the tanning, each of which he spent over a thousand dollars on, let's not forget that despite being constantly berated by this thread for it, he still also spent over a thousand dollars on things that he's going to put into his mouth - a hair under $400 on groceries, almost $350 on booze, and $275 on restaurants. I'm a little behind on Knyteguy's thread but I don't remember him spending over five hundred bucks a month just on eating out and getting drunk. The sheer uselessness of SlowMo's wasteful spending, and the massive amounts of it, get people's hackles up because there is just no good reason at all that he should be in debt with the money he makes. And also because every post he's made is so carefully calibrated to piss people off I can't decide whether he's trolling or just really THAT stupid. It's not jealousy - I probably make around as much as he does and I'm debt-free, just because I don't blow piles of money on dumb poo poo and don't rely on a credit card as an excuse to spend more than I made every month. I don't even have a real budget myself, because you honestly don't really need one with that kind of income, you just need to loving restrain yourself from blowing hundreds of dollars on impulse purchases.
