Look again at the character models and the level of detail in the backgrounds. No one's going to tell you that it's the best looking game of the generation, but it's a marked improvement.

I think most of the whinging about the visuals comes from people who played SF4 for two hours in 2009 and don't really remember what it looks like. I still play SF4 a few times a week and I don't mind telling you that it's really showing its age.

I've bought and played every version of SFIV and SFV still looks like crap.

SFV looks like the average person expects a next gen SF to look like. I wouldn't have minded a different style, but the average person is kinda the one financing the game we sperg over.

Blanka and Sim are 2 of the most iconic SF characters though. I would say the old 12 are a given + Cammy, because she is always on the top of popularity polls.

Hype for Street Fighter because, well, it's Street Fighter, but I've never liked the SF4 'Giant Monkey People' art style. From history involving miniatures, I'm totally okay with the oversized hands/feet/heads, because it makes for expressive characters, but I was hoping the style would go the route they have with Xrd, using 3d modelling to make a '2d looking' graphical style.

SF3 is still the best looking Street Fighter, for me - I'd actually controversially say that looking back I'm not even that keen on it as a game, but graphically & style-wise it was just The Best.

What's the chances on Juri being back in SFV? Not my favorite character by any means, but she is a neat "evil" female character, which I really cannot think of any others in Street Fighter, and her ability to hold onto her fireballs is pretty unique making for an interesting play style to fight against.

You could drop everyone from the original twelve except for Ken/Ryu/Chun, and the game would still turn out okay, I think. There's so many much more interesting characters in the Alpha/III/IV rosters to pull from.

I kind of hope SFV goes the SFIII route, and tries to mix things up a little. There's always expansions for when fans moan their old mains aren't in it.

Man, I think SF3 might be the best looking fighting game ever let alone the best for Street Fighter.

The proportions are still odd like SF4 (Chun in particular is really weird looking like usual recently) but overall the graphic style is a big improvement over SF4. Their faces look a lot better to me. The characters look a little more "realistic" in spite of still having some cartoonish body proportions.

Oh, I don't think there's been any 'perfect' FG - They've all got their foible, and to be honest, I can live with USF4 because at least more of the cast is competitive (or even viable) as a percentage of the overall number than most other FG's. My only issue is the graphic style is kind of rubbish.

I'm genuinely curious as to why people put balance so high on their list of things they want in fighting games, is it purely from a spectator perspective or what? Is it about comparative effort for equal results? I imagine it's not surprising given my love affair with 3S, but i've never really got why it's an issue for people who aren't playing at the toppest of top levels, there's so many things that you can learn and do to overcome the stuff that other mediocre people are doing and it's great fun coming up with ways to mess with good players who have rigid logic on how to play by putting them in wacky situations. It always feels like even against people equally skilled playing better characters you can always go to the next level if you put in the effort to learn to deal with them.

Eh, I really like the SF4 aesthetic. The bright bold colors, the caricatured facial expressions and bulky character designs make the game feel very fun and light, which I think is a good thing for Street Fighter. Street Fighter should be a romp, not some ironically grim-dark game like Mortal Kombat. That's my only real concern with SF5, the graphics and style are very reminiscent to me of the latest installment of Killer Instinct. Not the the fighting system looked similar, but the color palette and character models feel very similar.

I mean either way I'm buying it, as long as Zangief is in.

Well from a spectator perspective it means you get to see more characters which is great. The better the balance, the more diverse the cast you will play against is. Tier List information trickles down to lovely players, such as myself, and heavily influences who people play, meaning you will get to play against a wider range of opponents if more characters are considered to be in equal tiers. Further, a balanced cast allows people to play whoever they think is cool and stand a decent shot of winning, provided they put the time in. No one wants their favorite character, who they spend time on, trying to get good, only to later find that they suck thanks to poor balancing.

Every game made after hyper fighting is loving garbage

Pretty much the only games people will agree on are HF and ST and even then you'll probably have someone out there saying how lovely they are. Tastes are subjective and different people find different games fun. I really love 3s and vsav and I have a love\hate relationship with SF4. I don't enjoy games like Marvel or Skullgirls at all. I don't really play 3D fighters.

The kind of person who wants balance in a fighting game has a sense of fairness but is also really, really lazy. They don't want to spend effort in learning someone who sucks, but they also want to make sure that their character isn't perceived as better, because then how real is their gloating at the end of a fight session?

Its not lazy. To truly learn a character and play it well can take a long time, and you only have so much time to spend on a game. Do you want to spend that time learning a character who can't actually compete?

Further, a win is a win. Who cares if my character is considered better, you had an equal chance of choosing to play that character, if a character is objectively better than the rest of the cast, I am that much better than you by choosing to use the character that wins.

I guess my logic is that the game is what it is and if you don't find any of the viable options fun then you probably don't like the game itself? It just seems like an unattainable ideal and that measures to go after balance end up making every character feel more homogenous, I mean when I think of the funnest games to play they're all pretty unbalanced (3S/MvC2/CVS2) but playing with the viable characters is hella fun so who cares. I'm a well known bad opinion haver though so I guess there's giant flaws with this logic.
