I've been asked about Homestuck before. I usually just say "a comic online where these kids and aliens go on time-travel adventures." You don't have to go into any sort of detail about how craaaaaaaaazy and weird and bad it is, and if someone wants to know a little more, then they can ask. "Comic online?" "Yeah, they just post the pages on the web site." "Aliens?" "It's kinda scifi!" "Time-travel adventures?" "Yeah, the apocalypse happens and they have to build a new universe or something? *SHRUG* I like the [jokes/soundtrack/whatever]." Even if someone who knows that "Homestuck" implies "crazy nerd poo poo" overhears, if you talk about it like a normal person talks about any other niche hobby, then... well, if they get bent out of shape about it, doesn't that make them the real crazy nerdshit? It's not a big deal to like something nerdy, the problem with "Telling You About Homestuck" is that people turn it into an opportunity to take over the conversation, which is really obnoxious. I don't think people care too much if you just mention reading a comic in passing, even if it's a little bit oddball! (That said, once I told a friend about Homestuck and played up all of its negative points, because I had the feeling that she'd become a little too intense over Nepeta. Peppy, socially awkward young women who never outgrew their fanfic and I-love-animals-the-most stages should be steered gently away from Homestuck, I think.)

Homestuck is a coming of age story about how growing up is hard and no one understands.

I describe Homestuck by describing Wizardy Herbert and then expressing how angry I am that WH was DOA while Homestuck stole all of its amazing ideas.

Daius posted:Homestuck is basically Jumanji Why did you all keep posting after this obviously correct answer was given? I have never been asked to describe Homestuck that I recall, but I have used it as a form of currency where friends who want me to watch things I don't want to watch must read a commensurate amount of Homestuck in return. This works for me either way, since they either hate it in which case they stop pestering me or love it in which case I enjoy their newfound shame and self-loathing.

I know Homestuck is a webcomic about kids and fun that is now lovely we think but at least John did his personal quest. and made His Choice. with his Denizen. Actual Sburb stuff happened. That's got to count for something, right?

When I say "is lovely we think" the "we think" means we aren't sure. I do enjoy reading the comic, and moments like the pipeorgankind flash remind me of why homestuck is cool, but... I feel like people in this thread (arguably some of the more sane people I would interact with that read the comic) have been vacillating between "oh it's good" and "oh dear lord it really, REALLY isn't good" more violently, lately. Hell, the SA thread on Homestuck wasn't acting like this in act 2 or act 3, was it? are we getting like this because of the direction of the comic/nature of meta narrative, or is it because it's bad? or is it because vriska ...it was vriska wasn't it edit: i feel like i have tumbled down this very specific, somewhat bad smelling, oddly shaped rabbit hole before
