So, what are you guys' picks for the best albums to come out this year? Seems like we got a good amount of releases all over the place. I feel like there's a lot of albums that flew right underneath my radar, are there any albums y'all think didn't get nearly enough attention as they deserved?

In this thread's wheelhouse:

GridLink - Longhena (do people like grind here? It's also kind of mathcore)
Code Orange - I Am King
Every Time I Die - From Parts Unknown
Full of Hell & Merzbow
Cult Leader - Nothing For Us Here
Xibalba/Suburban Scum split EP

I'm surprised that the name Merzbow is being thrown around and it's not a joke. Are they actually making music that's really music now

Merzbow is one person and it's a collaborative effort. It's more or less just a FoH album that he produced, although some versions have a second side that's noise.

Is this the correct thread to talk about In This Moment? I just saw that they had released a new album named Black Widow. Yet to listen to it, but is it as good as Star-Crossed Wasteland? I thought that Blood was an incredibly boring album, and Star-Crossed Wasteland was the best they could do. Their album before that, The Dream, was also pretty cool however.

Edit: Christ they're still clinging to that "we have a good looking vocalist so lets base every song on her sexual appeal"-angle?

Merzbow has done collabs with tons of people, he's absurdly prolific.

It depresses me that his noise output is considered a joke when it's really great stuff to zone out to and get lost in the texture of.

I don't listen to too much metalcore, but I was impressed by the new Illudria album. Really reminiscent of that neoclassical guitar style that The Human Abstract made use of, and THA are one of my favorite -core bands. The new Torrential Downpour and Plebeian Grandstand albums are good mathcore, and if Longhena counts it's one of my favorite grind albums ever.

I was gonna mention the Kardashev EP which is awesome poo poo but I remembered that came out last year :shobon:

I think the only album from the year people haven't put on their top 10 that I would is Vanna's Void. Digging out all my hardcore poo poo from the early 2000s, the Vanna album was sort of my gateway drug into picking up a lot of the stuff people have been listing. I love how angry and vicious it is.

Coma Witch had a big impact, and Acacia Strain has me a lot more receptive to a wider range of stuff. I also really, really love The Ghost Inside album, watching that live stream of their show last night just adds to that too.

I liked the Emmure album. It's really dumb, and they try a little too hard to be edgy, but it works really well on an angry day.

I've also just been trying and sampling A TON of other random stuff, getting a feel for what I really love, what I just like, and what I can't stand. I put off Job For A Cowboy, because their band name is loving stupid, but I think their album warrants another listen.

Agree with you on all of these. Void doesn't quite reach up to Vanna's previous album, but still a really good release. I love their new style.

Coma Witch wins the year for me. Obey the Brave's Salvation comes in close second. Unearth and ETID were also bangers. I was sort of let down by the Ghost Inside record. I like it, but not as much as any of their previous three tapes. Few too many slow songs for me.

God drat man, every time I listen to Acacia's new album it just gets better. By far their best work since Continent IMO. Just so many crunchy riffs, bounce factor off the charts, and breakdowns so simple yet brutal. Really glad the turnover in the band with guitarists and DL finally exiting the writing process didn't slow em down.

The new guitarists for Strain said that Continent/Dead Walk was their favorite albums by the band, and it definitely shows. I'd say check out those two albums (I like Continent better than Dead Walk but I think the general consensus among Strain fans is the other way around so whatevs).

Check out Whitechapel's 2012 self titled album also. The songwriting on that album is top-notch, a shame their new album was kinda meh.

The Ghost Inside is such a horrible suggestion for anyone who likes Coma Witch to check out. I just saw TGI play with Every Time I Die and they're really such a snoozefest band. Not only do I personally not like them, but they're not in the same realm of The Acacia Strain at all.

The new Acacia Strain guitarists came from the bands Oceano and Molotov Solution; both excellent examples of similar music styles. Molotov Solution's album Insurrection is hands down one of the best deathcore albums ever. Oceano's latest isn't all that hot but their prior stuff is good.

I fuken love Ion Dissonance. "Cursed" was their best tape I say, so the new one (whenever it comes out) should be diarrhoea-inducing. The bonus tape at the end with the clean singing is actually my favorite track for some reason. Hopefully they do something like that again even though stupid people will hate it.

I thought the relatively hated tape "Minus the Herd" was way awesome as well and people are bad and wrong if they don't like it.

It's uhhh ok I guess. Never been a big Diecast fan (there are a few songs off Internal Revolution I dig) so I'm probably not the best person to comment on em.

It's kind of funny seeing bands like Bleeding Through, Chimaira, God Forbid, and (probably) Shadows Fall call it quits, while Diecast, It Dies Today, and Haste The Day are making their "comebacks". At least if you miss those other bands, you can expect them to be back in a few years.

I still remember the first time I saw God Forbid in the back of a little bar in Queens, NY. I've always loved them but stopped listening much when they released IV. Reject the Sickness is one of my favorite songs ever written. That album is solid and Determination is their best album.

Bands like God Forbid and Lamb of God were awesome at pioneering a more metal infused style of hardcore but then the style got so popular and lost all of it's hardcore influence and they just started playing bigger shows to worse fans (Slayer fans and poo poo).

I eventually saw Lamb of God open for Metallica which was crazy but at that point they had already written a bunch of lovely albums and sucked.

Wrath is a great album, and Resolution had a few tasty tunes. Sacrament kinda sucked imo.

Nothing beats Ashes of the Wake, though. Also, the remaster of As the Palaces Burn is great and actually makes the album listenable. The documentary on it is hilarious because it's basically Devin Townsend admitting that he was in way over his head while producing that album and all this poo poo.
