i briefly dated a girl who commuted two hours each way. she was a teacher, so it's not like more local jobs would be difficult to find.

oh yeah, one of my sister's (high school) teachers commuted like two hours from san antonio every day

even if she wanted to avoid inner city schools i think there's enough suburbs in san antonio to cut your commute in 1/4

should you get paid for the time spent commuting to the office

you can do whatever you want while commuting, though. it's your time and as long as you're where you need to be at 9am nobody gives a poo poo where you are or what you're doing at 8:50am. maybe you left early and hung out at dunkin donuts or something, your time your call

on the other hand, if the boss has you clock out but then prevents you from leaving, forcing you to stick around for an extra mandatory 15 minutes every day for some side task unrelated to your actual job, you should get paid for that time. except the supreme court just poo poo all over that, and their logic is exploitable as hell - anything that isn't an "essential function" of your job falls under this exception

i mean i guess it depends on what you're teaching, and i *think* she might have been a history teacher, which would complicate things, i suppose, but even still, two hours is a long way for a teaching job

i assume in america you already gotta clock in only after youve put on your uniform, unlocked the front door etc, and clock out as the first thing when shift ends

i worked as a lifeguard as a teenager and after a year and a half got a new manager. first thing new manager did was essentially this policy which didn't even make that big of a difference in any of our paychecks we were only doing it because it was more convenient. i did the numbers and found out this was only saving him a few hundred dollars a year and this was for a massive athletic club with thousands of members paying ~$200 a month for membership.

i quit soon after and got a sales job selling big screen tvs on commission while they were still insane-priced and lived like a baller my senior year :hehe:

depends on who you ask. lower courts and the department of labor usually rule that employees have to be paid for that time - big-name companies like Hilton and Farmers Insurance have lost million-dollar lawsuits over the past few years due to not letting people clock in till they've booted up their PCs, reviewed their email, and opened up all the programs they're expected to use. but supreme court rulings override basically everything else so hourly shitjob-havers just got hosed in the rear end

i still don't really understand i guess. if it's not an essential function of your job to do this extra 15 minute thing, then how can it be mandatory? i know the real reason ofc so this is really a hypothetical question

The county inspector that came through the new Walmart datacenter in Jane, Missouri had to sign an NDA before they'd let him onsite to inspect the property. When he called their bluff, Walmart execs said they'd be happy to tear the hundreds of millions of dollars facility down and rebuild it on the Arkansas side. He signed the NDA.

Walmart is loving good about info control. I doubt the jewelry DC poo poo is publicized much
