The BBC have called it for Button as well and they're usually pretty cautious. e: Link I'm so happy that he's got another year, but part of me is pissed off I have to care about McLaren still.

Button/Alonso?

Either Button gets in and seeing him up against Alonso will be a nice gauge of respective talents, or Magnussen/that dumb reserve driver will get in and I get to despise McLaren and laugh at their "future hope" driver getting destroyed. I actually can't work out why Button wants to stay. McLaren have built complete dogs the last few years, and failed dismally to develop them over the season so they're even worse by year's end. Add that to a new engine and I'd be surprised if they manage to finish 5th next year.

Button seems to actually like challenges, he actively chose to go up against Hamilton the year after his WDC knowing full well everyone thought Hamilton would destroy him - but he didn't. Now he gets to go up against Alonso, the other guy rated as highly.

Sure, he could have gone to WEC, but he has made clear that he wants to stay in F1. I dont understand why he would want to do that, but F1 seems to some how make drivers cling to their careers in the series way longer than they should. Hopefully Button wont become the next Rubens or Truli.

I really really really want a F2012 scenario where Alonso takes the battle to Lewis in a shitbox Mclaren and wins. Thus redeeming Alonso as the 2007-2014 MWDC.

You know what's gonna happen though is Alonso will waste the next 4 years at McLaren just like he wasted the last however many years at Ferrari. What honestly are the chances McLaren with a brand new engine could compete with the ridiculous amount of money going on at RB and Mercedes? He'll retire as the most bitter living F1 driver.

Kilmers Elbow posted:Meh....we were all about Alonso/Raikkonen and that turned out to be a damp fart. Yeah but that was Kimi going into Alonso's turf. Button knows the current team, car and design philosophy and has built a relationship with them over the last 4 years. I expect Alonso will get things his way soon enough, but there's still a settling in period where Button might have a slight edge.

Having said that I feel for Magnussen. He's clearly a talent and I doubt McLaren are going to completely cut him out. Probably just farm him out to WEC or something and bring him in as Button's permanent replacement in 2016.

I don't really understand why McLaren is employing Alonso and Button next year, that's too logical and reasonable for Formula 1.

My favorite bit in Alex Yoong's Wiki page, by the way, is thisquote:Yoong became the first Malaysian to race in Formula One with Minardi at the 2001 Italian Grand Prix and left the sport in 2002.[2] Yoong had a less successful career in CART World Series by the time he left F1 he had established a reputation as one of the most completely out-of-depth drivers in decades. and he had a less successful career in CART?

Lol if you didn't see it coming from a mile away. Alonso probably preferred Button, Kmag not bringing in a lot of money, another big talent in GP2. Legit believe Kmag could turn out great but it's a tough sport and he insisted on starting at McLaren instead of a smaller team, he knew the odds.
