I really like RPGs where you control multiple characters in real time, so FFXII has been my goto action RPG for that ever since it first came out. Dragon Age Inqusition reminds me a lot of FFXII but without the anime, and much better gameplay.

FFXII barely has any gameplay at all. Thank God for that fast forward button in the International version.

I don't really get this criticism, because it has the same gameplay that basically every party RPG has had since then. How is it any different than, say, Dragon Age Origins?

I never used the Gambit system to play FFXII. I mean you could set it up to where the game plays itself, but you don't have to and if you don't then it's a pretty challenging RPG.

I thought the current UC4 footage looked great, but this does call into question whether the "Running on PS4" footage was misleading. We had a discussion a week or so back regarding how something running in in-game cinematic has less complicated calculations to do than the same "in-Game" engine that has to allow for free agency, and why just showing an in-engine cinematic at 60fps with stunning graphics is different than actual gameplay.

Thoughts?

I agree with this statement. I also think releasing a target render that looks like X and then gameplay that looks like Y (where Y = worse, I suppose) is going to get people talking about you in a questionable light.

If this was the case (and maybe they did?) I would have put a big disclaimer that all that polish and whatnot will come at a later stage and this was just some unfinished alpha footage or whatever. As it is, showing 15 minutes of gameplay in this state is going to be the type of thing people assume is representative, as it was headlined at a big show.

Deep Down was last shown I think at Tokyo Game Show, and it was just another trailer. Nothing about a beta or anything has been talked about that i'm aware of. Game is still a long ways off.

Forgot about that. You might be right. For the record, I was not mad or dissatisfied. Just that it looked pretty different in a side-by side. And what I remember of the video posted at E3 (I should go back and look) was much more detailed in terms of movement and animation, at the very least.

if you look at the actual full video, taking into account its rips from streams etc, the game looks basically the same. there is stuff like drake getting slammed against a wall which has water running down it, that water then soaking his clothes and when a gun is fired near him soon after showing specular highlights from the water residue. or when he goes into water in a cave and has it making his clothes wet where the water actually touches, and this then changing the look of his clothes similarly to how he was at the beginning of the E3 video. someones made that "comparison" just to get people riled up.

The major difference with FFXII is that it is a Final Fantasy game. It lacks even the basic team-oriented mechanics that DA:O does. (Taunting/tanking, positioning being more than a minor issue, stealth/flanking mechanics, ect.) Combat being automated there really stands out because it underlines how simple all Final Fantasy combat mechanics are, and FFXII is honestly more simple than most.

People say it plays like an offline MMO but if it actually played like an offline MMO then there would be more class variety and combat variety. Even in INternational where they added jobs into the game (which does help), there's still relativley little variety between the classes beyond "this one hits harder" and "this one has more HP." Even having skills that emphasize their strengths would do a lot to help.

FFXII isn't bad when you consider there is a 3 year gap between these two games with FFXII having came out first. :v: It had some real good ideas at the time that have been improved upon by RPGs since then.

I'm curious about the state of the Panta Rhei Engine it is on. Deep Down is the only Japanese developed Capcom game announced for it. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 uses the old MT Framework Engine. Street Fighter V looks like it is an update of Dimps technology used previously for SF4. Panta Rhei was supposed to be used for a variety of next-gen games and allow more efficient development than past game engines. In contrast, the MT Framework Engine had shipped titles by this point.

You could take any game in development, show two different levels from the same build a few months apart, and someone will scream downgrade.

It's even better when they use Uncharted 3 as an example, since that game used pre-rendered cutscenes. They probabaly just changed the time of day, Drake's outfit and Elena's model.

I'm glad they're using real-time cutscenes for Uncharted 4, if only because it means we can be Doughnut Drake all the time. It was still fun thinking up reasons for his dramatic and sudden weight gain and loss in the earlier games, though.

I see no reason to get all antsy until the game releases. I'd bet on it being a little toned down from the original reveal because unanticipated resources needed for other game systems but throwing a hissyfit about it now is a waste of all that nerd energy generated from dorito mountain dew. Now if the game ships with graphics that are just on par with the TLOU remaster, go ahead and ask for blood I guess.

There were taunts (well, one taunt) but the teamplay dynamics were nowhere near as detailed or fleshed out as, say, Xenoblade Chronicles or DA:O/DA:I where the system is built around the DnD/MMO tank/striker/healer/support thing. It definitely leaned more on other things like collections and hunts which were becoming and are now also standard to the genre.

I don't think it looks quite as amazing as the E3 teaser did but it still looks pretty fantastic, especially in action. The view distance, the lack of pop-in, textures looked good close up, the complete lack of jagged edges all make for a gorgeous game. And dat foliage.
