On the moon... they don't make Neo Kobe Pizza.

I really don't like how far up its own rear end Dying Light is. They're still pushing that grimdark ultra-violent serious drama angle from Dead Island even though we have 3 games now from that franchise that prove that they can't do it. Meanwhile, Yager is doing the actual Dead Island 2 and it looks like a super-bright colorful Dead Rising-esque zombie mayhem thing that I can see myself having fun with.

And yet Yager are the guys that made Yager and Spec Ops: The Line. So weird.
I think Dead Island: Riptide and the MOBA were done more out of contractual obligation, as supposedly Techland really didn't want to drop a sequel so soon which is why they're doing Dying Light with Warner Bros. instead.

Though I actually played Dying Light for about forty-five minutes and what I played was waaaay less goofy in execution than anything in Dead Island. It felt a bit more like Far Cry 3. The day/night cycle was actually pretty cool since you have to plan your missions around that and getting back to safe houses in time because it does get pretty difficult at night. A lot of the abilities are inherently goofy video game stuff like like Assassin's Creed like climbing around stuff and blowing up cars near zombies to burn them or messing with the engine/electronics to electrify them but tonally it has pretty urgent feeling. Not particularly serious but much more aggressively paced than the Dead Island games so far, but you still have traps and environmental stuff and things like that. I'm much more excited about it than I am for Dead Island 2.

I'm enjoying it myself. I like the characters and VA and combat system though the characters/story/VA aren't quite as good as ME2 (Bioware high water mark, thanks Martin Sheen) and the gameplay isn't quite as good as DA:O. Still, a game that does a lot of things almost as good as two great but different games as well as some cool kingdom management stuff reminiscent of Suikoden is pretty damned good in my book.

One seemingly minor but important thing to note is that you can develop complex relationships with the characters without a romance angle. They did this a little with ME but it's definitely more fleshed out this time around.

Uncharted 4 looks different because its a different time of day, it's the same model.

Here's an hour long panel on the design of the new model from PSX
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70jVUBnp6lQ

It might be the same model but the shaders are not nearly as complex. The gameplay at 44:30 has the kind of lighting that should get the specular highlights of the skin and hair to show pretty much in the same way as the screenshots, or the turntable animation that is shown in the video, but they are absent. I doubt they'll have highres specular and micro bumpmaps (not to mention SSS which is there in the promo shots for the Drake model) for faces in real time, which would be necessary to get that smooth skin like effect going.. I mean it's certainly doable when there's a limited amount of models and textures in the scene but then when they show real gameplay those details are not there. And yes I know it's an alpha build.

Speaking of details, the stuff at 43:23 cracks me up.. "Each individual piece of hair actually has it's own wind" lolling at individual pieces of hair. The whole thing looks like a combination of the hair having a seizure and that effect you get on a hot day when the road heats up and the heat waves distort the view. Also the more wind there is the more the hair will move? So they increase the noise strength and frequency and/or scale. Not exactly future tech.

I'm looking forward to this game, it's just the current representations that bugs me. Why the gently caress would you show pre-renders of details like skin pores? Or that one woman who talks about shaders like it's some big industry secret or something that's recently discovered. Also the amount of times she reminds us it's the work of REALLY SMART individuals. They're talking about very basic stuff and relying on no-one having a clue as to what it means while avoiding concepts like "realtime" and "pre-rendered". gently caress if that wasn't embarrassing to watch.

Just to be clear I know people are pretty down to earth when it comes to hype stuff like this, I guess I'm just venting out because I very rarely watch these making-of type of videos, and was just reminded why that is the case.

So are most people feeling positively about DA:I? I was thinking about picking it up for an RPG fix, especially with the Witcher being delayed, and $40 is just tempting enough.

E: loved Origins/Awakening, never played 2.

This is from a couple of pages back, but I'll pick it up once more.

Seems like you got a few positive reactions and a couple of negative, which seems pretty much on par with the opinions in the game thread. Most people seem to like it. Some people ragequit the game on PC because of poor keyboard+mouse controls (and having read about them, I can't blame those people) while some others are disappointed about the single player MMO feel (first real zone has a literal metric ton of quests, many of them fedex).

I'm personally about 35 hours in at this point, and have only done the first major plot advancement part. So far Inquisition is the best game I've played this year, and the best RPG since Fallout New Vegas. There's just something about it that manages to engage me like no game has since New Vegas or the original Mass Effect. Some people say everything is boring, but I disagree. I think the story so far has been surprisingly nuanced, the character are almost all interesting and the game is very good in world building.

And it's really goddamn huge. There's so much stuff that you might never even find. I was quite astounded to find the quest that went to Valammar, which turned out to be a fantastic looking mini zone with several enemies I had not encountered before.

The game has a pretty different feel from Origins though. There is a tactical camera, but it's quite limited, since you can't queue up commands. I still like using it though, micromanaging the fights ensures I take way less damage. The crafting interface is also really miserable. When you're crafting, you can't compare whatever you're building to what your characters are wearing.

There are flaws, but on the whole I think the game has succeeded really well. For 40 bucks I would encourage you to pick it up, if you're feeling positive about it after these replies.

Late edit: Oh, and here's a quality of life improvement for the tactical camera just found out after 35 hours: When you tell someone to move somewhere, you can press X again on the same spot to tell them to hold that position. That stops your ranged guys from abandoning their good positions and randomly chasing the opponents.

Life, friends, is boring
As much as I am enjoying DA:I, I can see why some people would find it boring. At times I feel like I am playing a massive offline MMO with better combat and sweet graphics, and I am completely fine with that. In fact, it's the most fun I've had with a single player RPG since the original Dragon Age and Divinity 2 (which was a really good game in my book; I would love to have a re-mastered version of Divinity 2 plus expansion on the PS4, but of course that will never happen).

I hate the inventory system, the crafting screens could be a lot better, and I almost never use a mount, because I'd rather gather herbs and poo poo. There's other stuff I could list that I am not the biggest fan of, but overall I'm having a blast. The combat is definitely not as deep as the combat system that I loved in games like Icewind Dale, or even the original Dragon Age, but I am using the tactical camera quite often and things die in various shiny ways. Don't play the game on normal difficulty though, go hard or nightmare, otherwise you won't need the tactical mode, like, ever. Also, when my Necromancer got his first damage over time spell, I shed a tear.

The complaints about the art direction being boring sound weird to me, but that's a purely subjective thing, and I could make the same complaint about every Final Fantasy game in existence, as I just can't bring myself to care about that franchise. Sometimes things just don't click with you.

Enough of this nonsense. You are an important mayor and this absurd contraption has wasted enough of your time.
Guess I will go more in depth on why I don't much care for DA:I to give a differing view and provide more info than two sentences.

There are about a billion little annoyances that are just wrong or stupidly broken things that worked fine in the last two games and they all add up to being really obnoxious. Why is the inventory and crafting such a mess? Why can't I warp directly to the war-room? Why do I need to constantly mash L3 to light up things that I can interact with? Why don't they just stay lit up? Why don't they appear on the mini-map? Why is the map so mediocre? Why did they gut the tactics system from the first two games? Why do some things require so many resources? Why not require half the resources and cut the spawns in half (or don't who cares it's a singleplayer game) so that you have to spend less time scrounging up a billion elfroot to upgrade and replenish potions? Why do some war-room missions take 18 or so hours? Why does the interact button sometimes not work on things I am standing on while other times it will interact with things not even on my screen, mostly often a mount I dismounted. Why is the mount implementation so bad? None of that poo poo on it's own is a serious problem, but collectively it's grating.

What is serious is that the combat is pretty meh, at least from the rogues perspective. Cooldowns are just too long. Resource regeneration seems a bit off too. In terms of feel, it was like a vanilla WoW era character who had to hold r2 down to autoattack. All the enemies needlessly shift around constantly and this makes being a dagger rogue tedious. Bow rogues don't have this problem and are instead hamstrung by being boring as hell and not having any risk. I did daggers to 10, at which point I switched because getting flanking was tiresome and your moves often propelled you out of flanking. Then I did bows for 5 really dull levels before going back to daggers at 15, at which point I had gotten some insanely good daggers and the assassin specialization and it didn't even matter that much that I didn't have flanking consistently anymore because everything just died.

The world design is really poor, in my opinion. Stormcoast, Fallow Mire, and all 3 desert areas in particular feature huge chunks of map where nothing of interest exists. Just trash to fight and herbs to pick.

And lastly the real problem that I have with the game is that it is astoundingly unrewarding to play. The majority of quests that you get in the game are delivered to you via finding a random book or letter laying around. You read this usually dull snippet, get tasked with an mmo quest, and then when you complete the quest you get QUEST COMPLETE, some experience and some power and that's it. The only time you ever get any decent story to go along with your quests is when you do a party member side missions or the main story. It's awful. It's like I fell into a timewarp and landed in Vanilla WoW where quest text was boring poo poo you skipped as fast as possible. Even DA2 had better sidequests and people malign the hell out of those. Even throwaway radiant skyrim quests offer more background and insight into the world than what you get with most of the sidequests here. Even the main story seemed disjointed to me, with things happening that didn't really make a lot of sense given the context around them. Val Royeux in particular was rife with conversations that made no sense at all but I guess that was all part of THE GAME.

Even things I thought would be really cool just left me deflated. For example, you can take over a few keeps in the game. The result of taking a keep is maybe 1 or 2 really dull quests, maybe something to do in the war-room, and a new vendor. Exciting poo poo right there! And let me tell you about the payoff for a literal reputation grind with the Dalish got me. Spoilers! An elf joins my cause and 4 lines of dialogue from the leader saying we cool now bro. Also a NEW VENDOR!

There are some positive things to DA:I. The characters are pretty much all well-done. The voice-acting is top notch. Minus some nitpicky things I think the war-room is brilliant and I hope it gets used in a lot of games going forward. Taken as a whole I don't even think the game is particularly bad. A solid 7 on that meaningless 10 point scale everyone uses. But I probably would not have played it as much if it wasn't effectively replacing an actual mmo for my leisure time. "Being slightly more interesting than an mmo I have been playing for over a year in which the only content I haven't done is some really tedious grinding" is not a ringing endorsement though. Buy on sale. Maybe buy at full price if you aren't a completionist sperg like me. I imagine I would have liked the game a lot more if I had just done as little as possible to move the story forward versus doing literally everything.

Yeah. I like that stuff too. We're friends now.

Good trophy: MGS3's "use bees to harass an enemy"

Bad trophy: Guilty Gear Xrd's "you installed the game and reached the title screen!"

Who wouldn't want a trophy just for playing a cool game like Xrd? Seems reasonable to me.

Speaking of easy trophies, just crashed and bashed my way to 1st place in the opening Drive Club race. I should just quit now and sell the game because I'll probably never win again.
