Someone's making a documentary? I can't imagine that would be interesting. "We interviewed some lawyer about driving 18 hours and digging. Here's an action shot of a green fence"

They interviewed Egbert, went over the Cleveland solve, interviewed Preiss' widow, have looked at some other digs (none fruitful, I assume) and have interviewed many of the people who have been involved in the hunt for years. Probably the Chicago finders.

They walked around NYC with Egbert and Siskel and looked at some places, but i mean honestly you aren't going to solve this thing in an afternoon.

My take from Siskel's recounting of the trip is that honestly Siskel and Egbert don't really know poo poo about these puzzles. That's really been my takeaway from re-constructing #4. I'm sure I'll watch it and I'm sure it's at least a little bit interesting to crazy people like myself.

Well, my only thought was that just like the clipboard makes you look official, having a business card of a production company in hand, regardless of how small they actually are, gives you some cred when talking to DCR. Most people don't understand "treasure hunt", but everyone understands "making a movie". It might open doors (a lot more than dressing like one of the village people and going to dig).

Ok, I'm just gonna post this because the wiki is down and I can't sort through a few hundred pages to see if anyone else has noticed this.

Cask 9, possibly Montreal.

The prominent pattern on the guy's clothing is checkered flags.

His collar and shirt is an oddball shape, which has something of a resemblance to one end of the Formula 1 race track in Montreal:

If you look at the circuit on google maps, the resemblance is even greater, as the various layers of the coat/shirt/neck seem to coincide at least roughly with the river/track/lake at the circuit's south end.

https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Circuit+Gilles+Villeneuve/@45.5014444,-73.5266022,2251m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0xe0144f3fc885389b

That race track was opened in 1978, and it was kind of a big deal because it's on an artificial island, so even if it's not a big deal now, it was a landmark ca. 1980.

Am I doing it right? Sorry to interject in the whole Boston diggy bit, but the thread kept popping up.

I'm personally not a huge fan of aerial stuff, I think everything is either representative (Mill-Walk-Kee, Liberty Bell) or a direct visual clue. But it could be. It's the "could bes" that we will probably never solve.

Also, that would probably be more of a city/area clue & we know that ones in Montreal.

CommonShore

Is it an aerial theory, considering that the shape of a racetrack is really well known, and the artificial island (linked to the World's Fair, btw) is kind of centrepiece too? (in that respect it hits two keywords in verse 6, "water" and the needlessly-capitalized "Fair")

xie

I GET UPSET WHEN PEOPLE SPEND THEIR MONEY ON WASTEFUL THINGS THAT I DONT APPROVE OF :capitalism:
I think that's reasonable. I explained that we've spent (cumulatively) years on the hunt, narrowed it down to the park, and spent time combing the park putting it together. I said this was a one time request, I wasn't going to pester them for years trying to dig up the park.

In person the theory is very sound, it's a very simple and logical walk through a park. There aren't zillions of them but there's a steady stream of really solid and very hard to deny matches in the painting along the way, culminating in a spot that's both super duper clearly indicated by the final 3 lines in the poem but also by the painting itself. It's pretty solid when you walk the whole thing and have pictures of all of it.

I think I could convince most people of the theory if they're open to it, it's really really solid.

So it's the two statues combined into one figure? I'm noHonestly at this point, being realistic, the least matched Painting is probably #12. We have the gargoyle and the obvious liberty face, but the image has no concrete coordinates. There's just a lot of NY stuff going on, and it's super super likely that there's one in NY as Preiss grew up there and had his offices there.

That's not to say that #12 is anything other than NY, but there's absolutely nothing Legeater concrete there. gently caress Preiss for sending johann that email.
I still don't think I buy the NYC solutions. The bird is a close-enough match for the Chrysler building gargoyles or Ellis Island statues, but it's also close enough to the eagle statues on drat near every federal and state building in the US. I can't say the woman's face isn't the Statue of Liberty but I have a hard time believing that she as a whole isn't a better match to another statue or piece of artwork without anything else being a solid image match.

My gut instinct is that the dots in the "window" are going to be it, if only because it's the most frustrating thing that nobody can find a good match for.

xie posted:

I know it's not a real rule, and the book specifically says they can be almost anywhere but at this point they really all do seem to be in actual parks rather than private grounds.
The book says they aren't in "(b) any public or private flower bed" and one was found in a planter in a garden, I don't how much faith to put in where Preiss said they are or aren't.

edit: LOL, copies of the book start at $110 on Amazon. Should have bought more when they were $4 each and gouged people once the movie comes out.

That definitely wasn't a flower bed in Cleveland and they didn't have to dig up any plants. I think the rules are pretty fair. Also I always point out with #4 that it was a suggestion from JJP who lived in Cleveland, not a perfect insight into his methodology.

There's almost no chance there is one that's in someone's backyard or on 'very private' property. I can see digging one on the grounds of a college, that sort of private, but not someone's house or anyplace that in 1981 Preiss would have gotten arrested for digging at.
