I know people in Norway who get around the restrictions by using a us mailing address (either a friend's or one from viabox.com) and paying with amazon.com gift cards instead of using credit cards, but I don't know if there is any more to it than that.

That sort of matches the response I've seen from most other authors. Pre-orders don't seem to do much unless you are literally smoking hot and just want to make sure you can cash in on purchase-throughs before your star fades.

I have friends in the UK and the US but I figure it'd be easier to get set up in the UK because I live in Italy and have a bank account that, while Italian, is a sub-branch of a UK bank (BNL which is a part of BNP). I don't know the logic is kind of shoddy there, I'm just desperate. I saw veiled references to getting access to KU for non-US/UK but Google turned up nothing. KU launched for Italy last month according to http://the-digital-reader.com/2014/11/04/kindle-unlimited-launches-spain-italy/#.VIJMbYuJnzI

Oh wow, thank you. I can't believe I missed that, I swear I checked into KU a month or two ago and it was essentially US, UK, and DE. I checked amazon yesterday but I'm not sure if it was logged into my Aus account or if it saw that I was currently in Portugal, but either way it said not available in your country. I'm dumb for not searching more critically. Okay well I fly back to Rome tonight so assuming Italian KU has access to the global KU books (I believe it does, from an article I just read) I'm signing up for sure. That's crazy!

It's my first time, be gentle... Eh... Ok. I need some help. I have the plot written out one paragraph per chapter chunks. I'm... stuck to get past that point. How the gently caress do I start writing? In the past it was just easy, write whatever the gently caress I felt like writing for fun and shred it at the end of the day. Now that I have the idea of selling my What do I do?

Okay, I have to ask: Why an Alphasmart over any given laptop? I see a lot of people using those things, and I don't understand the appeal. I'm honestly curious, having not used one.

I think the idea is that it's free of distractions and you can't do anything but write with it. No alt-tabbing to porn, or steam, or whatever. Plus it loads up instantly. I don't own one, but I do have an old laptop with lubuntu and OpenOffice write and nothing else on it. Same reasoning, but I get multi line editing.

Sundae posted:Okay, I have to ask: Why an Alphasmart over any given laptop? I see a lot of people using those things, and I don't understand the appeal. It's all about the distraction free environment. When I go to my writing groups, everyone pulls out their laptops and they type a few words. Then they look at their screen and delete what they wrote. Then they get bored and tab over to Instagram. Then something on Instagram gets them excited and they spend the rest of the night on Instagram. I pull out my electronic typewriter, put my headphones in, and I write until my pomodoro app tells me to take a break. I do it because there's nothing else for me to do. The Alphasmart also has the benefits of having a genuinely nice keyboard and a year+ battery life on 3 AA batteries. It weighs less than two pounds, I can probably drop it from 4-5 feet onto concrete without any real repercussion, and if it does break it's maybe $30 for another one. It's also the absolute last thing a thief would walk out of a coffee shop with while I'm in the bathroom. Some folks are coming out with the overly elaborate hipsterized Hemingwrite that has some nice features (e-ink screen, dropbox cloud connectivity for backups) but will probably be hundreds of dollars.

My 25 minute blocks gets me about 1000 words. Those 1000 are cleaner and denser than when I spend two hours alt-tabbing and generally loving off to get the same 1000. I set out a goal to write 1k words a day for an entire year. I made that goal, but have been rather burnt out for the past few weeks. Time to break out the tomato and knock out the next 40k words to finish novel #5.

Hmm.. I re-did my title cover, changed keywords and modified the book contents to reflect the new cover, re-uploaded and modified everything in my KDP bookshelf. It went under review for 10 hours then emailed me to say 'your book is available'. Looks like everything has changed EXCEPT the cover, which is still the lovely old one on the actual book page, even though on KDP bookshelf it shows my new one. I've checked to ensure it's not just cached on my PC. Shouldn't everything be updated together? Do I re-upload the image and go through the process again, or wait longer? It's been 8 hours since I got the email to say the book was re-published and live. edit: Okay just washed the dishes, came back and the cover has been updated. Huh. New covers typically take longer to propagate through the system, if yours went through within twelve hours it was one of the faster ones.

I have one title that always takes super-long to review. It's a weird story. One day Amazon told me they objected to my cover. They wouldn't tell me WHY (the e-mail said it could have been any number of things setting them off, from obscenity to copyright — none of which I was violating, but they in their wisdom objected). I changed the cover entirely and there have been no more complaints, but now, whenever I update that project, it spends an extra 12 or so hours (beyond the normal period) in review, while I sit going that they're going to yank it for some unknown reason without so much as asking any questions. For all Amazon's advantages, there really is no talking to them sometimes. For all I know their automatic-content-flagging system decided my cover contained something that reminded it of a copyrighted photo and no human actually made the judgment call. Who knows. When you guys communicate with Amazon, do you do it by phone or all by email? I have heard quite a few people say they are a lot easier to do business with over the phone.

I don't think I'll ever be in a position to find out first-hand, but out of curiosity - if someone writes a review for something you've published on KDP, does Amazon email you a notification? Or is there a way to list reviews or do you have to check every store for every title?

You can check your AuthorCentral page and click on the Customer Reviews button at the top. This will list all your reviews for products under that pen name. Edit: But it can take a day or two to populate with new ones unfortunately. So if you need up to the minute info, you have to check each title individually on Amazon. Edit2: $1.39 borrow rate for November. I think this is the first official increase in payout since KU began. A strange but pleasant surprise.
