A couple of people have posted it, but in the pictures the plusle and minum act as the battery, which is typically represented by two lines, one with a plus next to it and the other with a minus. The Pikachus are the resistors/devices in the circuit, and the first 2 circuits you learn about as an electrician are series, and parallel, stuff in series is in a line and has the same current across the devices and they split the voltage. In parallel the devices are hooked up side by side and the current splits evenly across the devices where the voltage is the same as the battery. The first picture is series and the second is parallel.
