I'm not sure if it's still available for streaming (e: Moreflicks says it is), but depending on what kind of horror/movies you like, you might consider watching Beyond the Black Rainbow. It's slow, creepy, abstract, and visually incredible, like an art-horror film from the 1970s, which is appropriate because that's roughly the period in which the movie is set. The trailer is also really good I think:

The show stays awesome and the soundtrack only improves in the second season. I don't know how I've gone through life without being exposed to PJ Harvey.

I tried watching Peaky Blinders with my dad but he wouldn't stop laughing at the soundtrack for what's supposed to be a period piece (right?). So of course it started really bothering me. I've only watched the pilot so far, because suddenly Nick Cave on the soundtrack is a big pro and a con.

Nick Cave songs feature in every episode, not just "Red Right Hand". Also later you get PJ Harvey and some other awesome stuff. I think the music fits the mood perfectly. I mean it's not like they're using "Get Ready For Love", they use Nick Cave songs that are supposed to sound like "old British stuff" anyway.

I liked the soundtrack a lot actually. It doesn't fit for a 'period' scene but honestly it fits far better to have some punk sounds going on when a bunch of dudes are running from the cops etc. Fit better than playing "The Entertainer" or whatever period poo poo you could play at that point. That would just sound campy today and the scenes are too intense for that most times.

He isn't bothered by the show having color, sound, and special effects that are computer generated, does he? If not, then your dad is being a big dumb baby and you should sever.

The music wasn't written in the 20s, good. Cultural cues and styles have shifted and if they tried playing 'bad rear end' music from the period we would all be bored out of our mind by the weak rear end bitch music about jingoism. I can't imagine a worse decision for the show than period accurate music.

I loooove Pontypool but it isn't for everyone - I've heard a few people claim it was boring and pointless because nearly the entire thing takes place in one set, and there's not a lot of "monsters" to keep them interested.

Basically if you like the opening monologue, you'll probably like the whole thing.

It's funny how complaints about anachronistic music only seems to apply to certain genres of music. I've never heard anyone complain about modern orchestras or pianos and stuff in pre-modern set movies. Really having modern classical music in something like Troy or Clash of the Titans is much more anachronistic than Nick Cave in 1918.

Classical is old so it makes sense. Like putting pots and fig leafs in artwork so that you know it isn't pornography. Yeah, no one can account for the difference, but it totally exists and isn't weird and forced at all.

That actually is a pretty apt description of what 20,000 Days on Earth makes his recording process seem like. That movie was like watching sausage being made.

Final performance of "Push the Sky Away" was still phenomenal though. Maybe it's kinda like that Wilde quote about good artists being the least interesting to actually talk to. Which reminds me that I still need to see Anvil.

I'm on the third episode of Broadchurch and I like it. It's suspenseful and funny, and I'm not a Dr. Who fan but I like David Tennant's relative zaniness in it. I loved Mitchell & Webb but it didn't spoil me for Olivia Colman's performance, which is pretty great as the green small town detective with the big case.

I also like it because I'm gradually becoming more and more horrified at the law enforcement in it. Was...was that the UK's version of the Miranda rights? Also at the beginning I sort of thought "man it's almost like they're planting that detective there to monitor the family" and then I was like "holy gently caress they planted that detective there to monitor the family"

I don't think any of this is really spoilers.

As far as I know, the UK version of Miranda is pretty similar to the US, except the right to remain silent is altered to a right to remain silent but if you don't mention a relevant fact that you later rely on in court, that omission can be used against you. I find it a little offputting, but I dunno that I'd call it horrifying.

Also the guy's not really a detective, he's a family liaison officer, which is apparently common in UK murder cases to keep communication open between the family and the police. The only thing odd about the one on the show is that I don't think they usually actually stay with the families? But I'm just getting this poo poo from articles on the Internet, so I might be wrong.
