Samsung Developer Conference 2014 by khyrre, on Flickr Samsung Developer Conference 2014 by khyrre, on Flickr My new Xperia Z3 Compact has disgustingly good low-light performance for a smartphone camera. 1/2.3" sensor, 25mm equivalent FOV, f/2 aperture. Up to 20.7 MP if you shoot in manual mode. The auto mode limits it to 8 MP but does a bunch of extra stuff to make the images look better, so I've been mostly sticking to that mode.

Disneyland sure is pretty at night Disney California Adventure by khyrre, on Flickr Disney California Adventure by khyrre, on Flickr Disney California Adventure by khyrre, on Flickr Got more photos in that album, but the rest were taken with my X100S. Only fell back on my phone for these three because the battery died and I forgot to bring a spare.

Manual mode on the iPhone is kind of weird. I tried playing with exposure/ISO values on my iphone, and it seems like noise increases with exposure time way more than it should. As in, getting the same exposure with either high ISO/short shutter time or low ISO/long shutter time results in about the same amount of noise, whereas with a "real camera" the latter would often result in less noise in the final. Presumably it's just because there's all kinds of poo poo being done by the ISP and JPEG encoder before you see the image, but it still seems odd. Has anyone else noticed this?

I just got an iPhone. Am I forever doomed to 4:3 pictures? The video setting captures a 16:9 image but unless I'm an idiot there doesn't seem to be a way to do the same with photos. If this is indeed the case... why?

Not really, just compose for a future crop. And I'm sure the iPhone has grid lines which would make it easier if you're bad at imagination.
