This is super cool and way too much fun... which is why I'm posting at three in the morning.

I started doing this yesterday with a few images that struck me as being good material for manipulating. I used echo and edited the coding text for this one:

And I finally found a good idea for a new picture on my soundcloud profile:

In short, this is the best and most entertaining thread I've come across in a while!

A combination of LastManStanding's processing code posted in this thread, ASDF Pixel Sort script for processing, and a stand alone program called Pixel Drifter.

All three were used on the first image and pixel drifter was used for the last two.

I use ASDF and Pixel Drift but I know very little of what I'm doing with them and I can't for the life of me get any of Last Man Standing's scripts to work or do anything. Possibly related: my coding knowlege extends as far as copy and pasting code into notepad to make scripts for Arma.

For example:

I'm completely clueless as to what I can and cannot fiddle with below that red line.

I know you can pay for Pixel Drift, does that open up more options that let you move bigger chunks of the image around? I notice there are a lot of grayed out options in mine and everything I do is kind of just a fancy pixel sort.

If you're like the other people who have had trouble, it's either because you're bad at copy pasting, you aren't copy pasting every file in the folder (you need all the files for it to work), or you aren't putting your image file in the correct folder (some scripts require the file to be in a folder labeled '/data'). The easiest way to fix this is to just download the zip file.

Welp didn't see the zip from before. Your scripts are actually incredibly easy to use.

As a stand alone program for 15 dollars, I'd say it's worth it. It does have a handful of other options regarding sorting and parsing (allowing you to do the whole "move big chunks around" thing) along with the ability to save individual frames so you can make gifs.

For those of you that are as processing illiterate as I am, the data folder needs to be placed in the lib folder.

I like using these because Batman has such a distinct silhouette that I can make the image almost incomprehensible and you can still make out Adam West fighting a robot.

most of the day was spent tweaking processing stuff so p much all of my stuff for the past few days are reference points to see if things are doing what i want them to do. so, uh. here some of those reference points are. i know the sketch-looking one isn't /glitch/ per-se. it was the framework for a Kof sketch that is about to start drawing glitches and i thought it was pretty so... it's there too.

this is p much my favorite thread.

^^That's some cool poo poo Mandlebrot^^

Some of these pieces are probably more "generative art" than glitch art. The next glitch thread should include generative art because that poo poo is fuckin neat.

So this image was made using a program based off the Rutt Etra analog video synthesizer.

These were made using Atkinson and Bayer dither algorithms found in old mac paint and old digital kodak cameras . The last one has a simple drumroll cut applied to it.

And the last two are forgotten pieces I just found.

Update to GlitchPaint

Now with a fancy GUI :eyepop:

Other changes:
I integrated PixelSorter, so you don't have to switch back and forth. The line tool can now be used at any angle. The noise level of the noise tool is now adjustable. Paste tool has a preview. I made a very basic glitch filter.

I also added a filter which reduces the color palette with a floyd dither.
The options are a 1-bit black/white, 3-bit 4-bit 8-bit RGB, 4-bit Gameboy, NES, and an optional custom palette space.

When my glitch filter glitched out:

What value overflow does to a dither algorithm.

What did you use to do the Rutt Etra stuff? I was playing around with something similar in 3-d, (my glitch tunnel video thing earlier, I have another test I need to upload soon I'll post it here), but I was curious how to you got the 'authentic' Rutt Etra look.

There's three options you can use; the first two are video plug ins; one for Quartz Composer and another for Max visual programming . Then there's a webGL program that's stupidly easy to use (http://airtightinteractive.com/demos/js/ruttetra/).

This is awesome. Is it a rotating brush or some mathematical squiggle used as a mask?

I also like this and it should be super simple to put into GlitchPaint.

Do you have any feedback on the new interface? Is it straightforward enough? Anything you'd like to see changed or added?

I only played around with it briefly so far, but is there a way to type in my brush number? Or some other way to quickly change brush size other that clicking + and -

Read the shortcuts tab or text file. '[' and ']' change the brush size by 5. '-' and '+' change it by 1. By holding the key you can go from size 1 to 100 in about a second. The mouse wheel will scroll through the tools and tab will change the mode.

Cool stuff Boi Hole.

I've spent way too many hours over the last few days learning how to use Blender and other 3d rendering software to decipher this tutorial, but I figured maybe someone else here is already aware of how to use said software and can use the glitch tutorial with ease. Seen some really sweet work done with it.

Another Update: (Download)
I've given up on github so it's a zip file with the option of running the program as a windows 64 application or running the source in processing.

Changes made:

- The window is resizeable allowing you to maximize the window.
- Added halftones in both black/white and color (it's not a true color halftone, but I might do that later).
- The amount of dither is now controllable. Negative mean less dither, positive causes it to overcompensate which leads to interesting effects.
- Mosaic with an optional gap.
- Triangles, both uniform and random.
- Blinds can be inserted manually and can be offset.
- The sort brush now works as a selection.

Thank you so much for keeping the updates coming; I've only just started playing with these tools but they are really cool and I look forward to learning them. Everyone using them has been on some next level poo poo.

However, I did just download about 90 audacity plug-ins (oh god I know nothing about audio engineering, what are these things) so first things first...

I've been using the same image over and over as a testing bed, and just decided to start combining test images as channels:

New Program: (Download) Had some free time yesterday so I threw together a RuttEtra style program.

- Full 360 rotation along the X and Y axis.
- X and Y resolution control. (Warning: Using very low x/y spacing on large images can pretty much stall your computer. When working with large images, slowly lower the spacing. I might limit this later.)
- Line thicknesses.
- Displacement mapping using any combination of RGB and/or HSB.
- Perspective or Orthographic projections.
- Display results as a single plane, horizontal lines, floating pixels, or a mesh.
- It also lets you load a custom displacement map for added fun.
- As always, the 's' key saves the frame.

Example of the different modes:

Example of line thickness at high line spacing:

I've found that looking behind the images often gives the best results:
