Kind of an odd question, but here goes . . . I'm going to be in Vegas next weekend. One of the reasons I'm going is photography. I know there's plenty of stuff/people to photograph along the strip, but I may rent a car and drive around a bit to photograph abandoned stuff. Are there any good half-built but basically abandoned subdivisions in or near Vegas that would be fun to explore and take pictures of? To give you an idea of distance I am willing to travel, I'll probably drive out to Nelson.

Not really, no. Housing doesn't really go unfinished here.

Maybe the structures that ever got started are finished, but the subdivisions themselves aren't. There are loads of subdivisions with miles and miles of undeveloped streets, lonely clusters of houses, etc. Just tool around Google Maps and you'll spot plenty, especially in Enterprise and Henderson.

My non-gambling buddy and I rented a car and did the clock-wise circuit of Vegas northeast to Valley of Fire St Park, east to Lake Mead, south to Roger's Spring (its stinky but a neat rest stop), then back west to Vegas. There is plenty to see at VoF so I recommend spending most of your time there, stopping at various locations for great pictures of wildlife and plantlife. If you are in shape, you can hike around the White Dome Trail.

There's also Red Rock Canyon to the west of Vegas. Very picturesque.

For anyone who cares my Vegas roundup highlights:

Food:
-Mandarin Bar is very nice selling very tasty cocktails and with a killer view. If you want to impress your lady this is a good spot.
-Secret Pizza is "vegas affordable" and really really good.
-Holsteins is also good. Share food. Not because you're a cheap-rear end but because if you get a shake you really get 2 shakes and by the time your burger comes you gotta fight hard to finish it.
-Lotus is still great. Probably the best crispy duck I've ever had.
-Minus5 Ice Bar is the definition of a tourist trap, however I thought it was worth it and had a great time.

Gambling:
-Sigma Derby is a stupid game but possibly one of the most fun and certainly the best bang per 1/4 buck.
-Aria cocktail service mojitos are surprisingly good.

Hotel:
-Aria is a great place to stay with a loving fantastic view and the people there were true professionals. If you own a hotel you should come pay this place a visit and take notes on how to make people feel welcome.

Shows:
-MJ One is like concert with a crazy high production value for a dead person. It's not very Cirque-y imo but fun if you're a MJ fan.
-Zarkana is fun if it's comped. Probably wouldn't be first on my list to pay for but still some impressive acrobats.
-Penn & Teller was great. My wife got to be part of the show, they stayed around after to sign some poo poo etc. I thought they were hilarious and at the same time really impressed by their tricks. Sit close.
-Absinthe I thought was great. Some really impressive stunts and I dug the comedy.

Attractions:
-Tiger and Dolphin thing at the mirage was neat. My wife really liked the tiger kittens and dolphin training was fun to watch.
-Shark reef was smaller than I thought but a good comp.
-NYNY coaster gave me an awful headache. My wife made fun of me :(

One other thing I noticed is that it appears that after the Casino/Hotel industry is that the next largest employer in Las Vegas must be Walgreens because they are building those things everywhere.

I've been tryin' to speak with you for a long time
I am considering a trip to Vegas the week after Valentine's day with my wife and two kids, one 5 and one that will be 4 months old. We are primarily looking to go to someplace where it does not rain all the time and isn't too cold in February, and have not decided yet if we will drive or fly (depends on cost of flying). I know there is a lot of stuff to do in Vegas with kids, which is why we want to go there. We are not looking for drinking and gambling, though might hit some penny slots at some point.

Where should we eat? We are on a budget but don't like to eat crappy food so not looking to cheap out totally. All cuisines acceptable, although would like non-spicy options for the my daughter. It would be good if there are some places that can deal with/are good for kids. My five year old behaves well in restaurants as long as the food doesn't take too long. We live in Portland, where it is acceptable for my wife to breastfeed anywhere, including restaurants and shopping malls. Is this a problem in Vegas?

I am willing to pay a little bit more for the room if there are cool activities for the 5 year old at the hotel, but if the savings are huge I am willing to cut corners on the room as long as it isn't super lovely. My wife insists on a pool. If we fly I would want to be somewhat centrally located to kids activities. We also might like to get outside the city and go hiking if anyone has good suggestions for this. We are also interested in at least one kid friendly activity where our daughter can be very active.

Is there anything attraction-wise we should not miss as a family?

vegas with kids, yea...

TheReverend
Jun 21, 2005

Don't bring kids to Las Vegas.

If you want warmer weather and family fun to go Anaheim and see Disney Land and maybe go to the beach.

I'm not saying it to be rude or anything, it's just not a good place for kids. They tried making it "family friendly" but it didn't really pan out.

If you insist, the best I can think of is
-Outdoor attractions like Gondola ride, Mirage volcano, Bellagio fountains.
-Tourist shops like M&M world.
-Adventuredome at Circus Circus
-Shark reef at Mandalay Bay
-Secret Garden at Mirage
-Was Museum.

The "kid friendly hotels" aren't really all that kid friendly nor great.
Circus Circus is far away from everything. There's a kiddie casino (win tickets from carnival style games) and a free circus show. They do have the adventure dome.
Excalibur looks cool to kids but it's super dated and not really any kids activities except for an arcade and maybe that Tournament of Kings show.
Luxor is trying not to be Egyptian anymore.
Treasure Island is trying not to be pirates anymore.

I can't really think of a hotel room that would have stuff for your kid to do.

A lot of pools are open year round. Call the hotel and ask. Mandalay has a really neat pool but I don't know if it's open.

For food, you're kinda hosed. There is food courts and stuff but they sell the kind of food you said you want to avoid. Good food is going to cost. That's just how it is over there. Everything is costly.

Rent a car and hike Red Rock canyon if you want her to be active. She could do Hoover Dam maybe. I wouldn't miss Hoover Dam because I think it's a really neat and historically significant piece of engineering.

There's a pinball hall of fame, but that's also off strip.

I think realistically you're going to need a car because any kid possibilities are going to be away from the strip/Fremont.

Maybe someone else knows a better kids strategy but I wouldn't recommend it.

edit: beaten.

Southern California local here that hits up Vegas approximately 6 times a year.

Everything I've bolded in your post is where I think you're going to run into trouble. First off, Vegas is still pretty cold in Feb. It won't rain, but expect average lows to be in the high-thirties, and average highs to be in the low-sixties. Not sure exactly where you heard that Vegas has a lot of kid-friendly attractions, but in my experience, this isn't the case. TheReverend covers all the bases of possible kid-friendly stuff, and that is honestly an exhaustive list. Las Vegas isn't nicknamed Sin City for no reason; it's primary purpose is to provide a haven for binge drinking, gambling, parting, and promiscuity. And God bless it for that! If, as you admit, you're not looking for any of that, then it really isn't the destination for you and your family.

The hotels are not set up with children in mind and rarely have kid-friendly activities, and unfortunately most (perhaps just many?) of the pools are closed during the winter. I was just there for work last weekend and our hotel (Red Rock Resort and Spa) had their pool closed down for the winter. I've heard that there is some decent hiking outside the city, but to be honest, I've either been too drunk or too hungover to ever check any of it out.

If I may second a suggestion made in a previous post: bring your kids out here to Southern California! With Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Universal Studios, Six Flags, beautiful beaches, and the Pacific Ocean, there are a myriad number of things to do with children here. Feel free to pm me if you'd like any more info as I won't de-rail the Vegas thread with any more SoCal talk.

Definitely don't do Vegas with kids. I can't stress this enough. It's really really weird seeing people with children in casinos in Vegas.

If Southern California is too far, maybe look at the Bay Area. Great America, Santa Cruz Boardwalk, Six Flag's Discover Kingdom etc. lots of kid friendly and fun things to do in Northern California.

I agree Disneyland is the way to go though.
