I have been car shopping lately so I've been test driving a lot of cars. Today I tested two bad cars, a veloster turbo (it was terrible but not the purpose of the post) and a WRX hatch with airbag suspension and a tune. This car was absolutely ruined by the bags. It constantly bounced. As soon as I got on the power I'd have to let off because the ride was unbearable. And the airbag unit took up the whole trunk area. http://www.choiceautocenter.com/2013_Subaru_Impreza_Shrewsbury_MA_250388077.veh Tastefully modified my rear end.

Jesus H Christ. What's that on the fender? A ricer bandaid sticker covering body damage?

Someone went low without making sure there was enough clearance with the wheels at lock and likely didn't roll the fender lips. Either way, look at the paint differences on that side of the car, as well as the inconsistent gaps on either side of the hood.

I tested an evo and it was awesome. I wanted to try a wrx too, so they rolled that one up and apologized for the bags in advance.

As a Veloster owner - it is an efficient little commuter that looks sporty but could not be further from that if it tried. I enjoy the interior, but the actual driving experience is profoundly disappointing if you think you're getting a Fiesta ST equivalent.

I don't think there is any quicker way too feel like an rear end in a top hat. You don't even have to get out and see the damage. You feel the hit and just know. "I'm an rear end in a top hat".

My test drive experience is one that is coming from a guy with a kid on the way looking for a fun car with room for a kid to replace my FR-S. It sounded like a Hyundai accent and had no pep at all, and the interior was all crappy hard plastic and full of little vibrations. It basically felt like every crappy rental car I've ever had, but with a sleepy manual transmission

Airbags on anything that has to drive around or corner is a loving joke. There are a number of companies trying to do high end or performance air bags too. One pairs $6000 jrz rs pro shocks with the cheapest air bag kit they can find and markets them for gtrs. What a waste of a good damper.

We as a society have just accepted that a two door four cylinder FWD car needs to weigh nearly 3,000 lbs before options are even brought into it.

I wish I'd had my camera ready this morning when I passed an Escalade EXT (the pickup truck variant) sunk up to the axles in mud in an empty lot a few miles from Pebble Beach today. The driver was in the driver's seat, and boy did he ever look pissed.

But since nothing else is being built there's really not much to be said about it, no one asked what I wanted in a car nor offered to build a car based on my preferences. At least not since the 60's. But that era had its own issues, building gas guzzling death traps.

The MS3 feels like a slightly hatch with an insanely torquey engine the front wheels could barely contain at the best of times, let alone while trying to turn. Like a little sledgehammer. The FR-S I drove was like a tiny sharp scalpel.

Society has decided that a vehicle is unsafe unless it has front/rear/side/knee airbags, stability control, traction control, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring systems. It's worked, too. Talk to any medic, fireman, or cop who has been on the job for awhile. People just don't get hurt in accidents like they used to. I've only been working in EMS for 12 years, and I can still recall how brutal accidents used to be, especially side impacts. You could count on a ruptured spleen and fractured pelvis when someone got hit in the driver's door. Now it's the exception to see things like that.

This might be a massive case of confirmation bias but over the last few years I started to hear far fewer stories about people getting severely injured in car accidents and more about people just dying, meaning that you're either going to make it out of a wreck ok or it's going to be bad enough to kill you outright no matter what safety features are in there.
