You're an idiot if you didn't complain to customer service. If the email says "your guaranteed delivery date is _________", yell at CS when it's late and you'll get a $10 or $15 credit.

Amazon has messed up shipping twice in the 3+ years I've had prime and I have at least 2 orders a month. Both times I talked with support and was credited to my account for $15 or something each time. That's what customer service is for, to fix things.

Be that as it may, I wanted my loving exhaust by Friday night so I could install it over the weekend, not $10 or $15 after wasting my time on the horn with tier 1 customer service. By the time I determined their page was lying to me, it was too late to get the parts locally anytime before Sunday evening for a ~30% price premium.

So I just angrily click the "poo poo did not arrive on time you assholes" button on the tracking page and move on with my life. If it happens enough I will probably hassle them about it.

The transcript of the last time I was on the horn with Amazon CS was basically this:

CS: How may I help you today?
Me: The guaranteed delivery date was yesterday for order #1234567890 and I still don't have my stuff. I bought Prime to have guaranteed 2 day shipping not eventually 2 day shipping sometime whenever UPS and USPS feel like it
CS: I'm very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused, I have credited your account $15. Once again, apologies, blah blah blah

You do have to be careful since some stuff is Expected Delivery Date vs Guaranteed. If it says Guaranteed and it isn't there, go yell at them.

Kinda related, and as much as it sucks for everyone working there, are any other Brits glad to see the back of City Link? I've had all of 3 parcels handled by them and none of them have successfully made it to me first time. The best one was being told over the phone that my parcel was definitely at the Basingstoke collection centre, only to drive there and be told it had been sent to Manchester by mistake. :allears:

I Want To Believe.
My Amazon orders page noted one of my two packages was now showing as "delivered". Suspicious that they may have hidden it behind my bin or something, I went out to check... and found both packages in my porch. So at some point this evening (I was last outside at about 7pm) they've turned up, not rung the doorbell (I thought maybe it was playing up, but no, it's working), and just dumped the stuff there (and not closed the door properly after them).

So yes, in the strictest sense, they have delivered my stuff today as promised, but that's taking the piss a bit.

A second gen K5 was on my short list of lovely old 4x4s I wanted when I ended up with my XJ. The other options were a second or third gen Bronco or a Wrangler... then I realized Wranglers actually cost money and an XJ was more in line with the body styling I like anyways.

Sorry this is a page back, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to cheerlead. LS motors already have everything you could possibly want on a gen1 SBC, and usually those things are big dollar items. For instance, the LS motor is full roller (cam, rockers), and has has 1.7:1 rockers. 1-piece rear main seal. A good classic SBC has 4-bolt mains; most have 2-bolt mains. LS motors all have 6-bolt mains. Everything except one motor in one year has aluminum heads. It's already set up for sequential spark and fuel, and the stock ECU is incredibly flexible. Plus, you can get big-block displacement in a small-block package, and with an aluminum block if you want to spend some more money. Oh yeah, and they're cheap; an iron block 5.3 should run you less than $500. The only argument for a classic SBC that I can think of is wanting to keep a swap simple (carburetor and distributor) just for the sake of being simple. If you're going to go through with wiring up electronic engine control, might as well get the whole package.

Renzyal posted:

Same reason people work as waiters, in a fairly busy night you can make up for the lower pay and make a bundle ontop of that. Of course that can fail on a slow night or if you don't get the good tables or delivery spots

I've had shifts where I've made $5 (including mileage, on a loving closing shift, at that - 2 deliveries in 6 hours :wtf:), and I've had shifts where I've broken $500. This is the first delivery job I've had in 10 years that didn't pay below minimum wage (it actually pays slightly above minimum), but it's also the first one I've had that didn't have some form of fuel or mileage reimbursement. Last time I worked at Papa John's, I got $4.25/hr while dispatched, and $1.59 per delivery ($7.25 while inside the store). At Pizza Hut, I started at $5.50/hr while dispatched (got bumped to $5.85 after a year), and $1.10 or $1.00 per delivery depending which store I was working at (again, $7.25 while in the store). The franchise I worked for just cut 8 cents out of those delivery reimbursements; I need to scan the letter and post it, it's quite literally a "hey thanks for all your hard work, but we're going to reduce what we pay by pennies just because we can".

We don't get our own "delivery spots" - it's first driver in, first driver out, oldest orders go out first - it's not like a UPS or USPS driver with a set route. Whenever possible, 2 orders will go out with a driver at the same time, as long as they're fairly close to each other (same general direction), unless poo poo has really hit the fan - then it's 3 or 4 out at a time, and you just hope they're in the same part of town. I always try to work in stores that primarily deliver to upper middle class to downright rich areas; the store I'm at now serves primarily upper middle class to upper class, and the tips reflect it. The store I'm at is also known to have pretty drat good food (meatpimp is apparently familiar with the brand).

I've come close to breaking $100 in a shift twice so far at this store, and I've only been here 3 weeks (at Pizza Hut, I only broke $100 3 or 4 times in a year and a half, I rarely broke $50 there). It's not a very busy store, but most of the drivers bitch about orders to one corner of town (I mentioned it before, it's a mixed use residential/commercial property). When they bitch, I offer to take the order, if I'm the next driver after them (again, first in, first out). If I'm not, I check with everyone ahead of me. So far I've only been refused a couple of times. Then they wonder how I wound up with 15 deliveries compared to their 6 or 7. We have a map of the property, we have access cards for all the gates, it's 3.5 miles away... the only difficult part is parking (my car is small enough to fit into those end spots in the curb cutouts for parallel parking and not stick out into traffic). I don't get why they hate it so much  but I have the blessing of both the GM and asst GM to keep doing it, as long as the driver it's supposed to go with (and anybody ahead of me/after them) agree to it.

Then the other drivers wonder how the hell I've wound up with 15 or 20 orders compared to their 6 or 7. Not only do I get more orders because everyone else is too bitchy to deal with parking, but it also means the drivers who passed up the orders are stuck in the store a bit longer.. which means they're stuck doing dishes, cleaning, etc. Which means less poo poo for me to do once I'm back in the store. :getin:

Boaz MacPhereson posted:

Oh hell yeah K5. A monster big block would be awesome for that if you don't mind single digit mileage.

:swoon: A K5 is on my top 10 list of vehicles to own. Except with a modern drivetrain.

A friend has had one for ... 20? 30? years? It's been through 3 engines and 3 or 4 transmissions in that time, the interior may as well not exist at this point, and only the passenger side and rear windows roll down (the a/c doesn't work either, of course). He picked up a dirt cheap Mazda 929 a couple of years ago to use as a daily (body is rough, but it runs well, everything works, and it aligns just fine), and AFAIK the K5 just gets driven when it's less than 80 outside. He loves it, partly because it's one of the few vehicles he can fit in (he's about 6'4, and on the large side).

I'd actually like to buy it off of him whenever he's sick of fixing it. Get the front bench reupholstered, get Ol' Wheezy 305 running properly for a bit, get the top broken loose (it's never been off, according to him, so I'm sure whatever gaskets exist between the top and body will need replacing), get all the broken interior stuff fixed, fix the a/c and heat (heater core is cracked, but it's not like doing a Volvo heater core), and eventually do a GenIV 4.8 swap (more because they're dirt cheap, everyone passes them over for a 5.3, and can easily make just as much power as a stock 5.3 with very little work). I know everything on it is completely worn out, but they're very basic and easy to work on. Not sure if I'd swap to a newer grill or not though - it's whatever the last year was of the round headlights, and I prefer the look of the square ones. Though I know you can get modern retrofits for the rounds (including LED). It'd definitely include all new wiring; it has some electrical issues that are likely related to dry rotted wiring. I wouldn't give two shits about the paint; the body is kind of beat, but there's absolutely zero rust anywhere (my Saturn is nearly 30 years newer and has a lot more, thanks to spending half its life in Utah).

Sad part is it's 2WD, but it's not like there's really anywhere to go offroading out here anyway. I just really love 70s/very early 80s trucks, especially K5s and Broncos.

I do have a decent rant about Amazon's shipping.

They never tell you what carrier it's going out with. For someone who lives in an actual home, that's not an issue. When I lived in dorms, that was a huge issue. If it was going out USPS, I had a PO Box at the university postal center. If it was going UPS/Fedex/etc, they could deliver it to the front desk of my dorm; the person at the front desk would call me or text me to tell me I had a package. While I had an actual street address at the dorm (200 Avenue D, Room #<nope>, Denton TX 76201), USPS didn't handle anything on campus. Anything USPS went to the campus mail center.

It wasn't until halfway through my first semester that I learned that the postal center would accept UPS/Fedex packages, but it also meant I had to get there between 9-5, then figure out a way to either strap it to my bike, shove it in my backpack, or wait for the next bus that went in the general direction of my dorm.
