https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=794NSkRWQJ0&t=69s The 80s are "in" these days and what better way to capitalize on what's cool then with a racing game? Though there's limited information on it so far, Drift Stage is going to be a race game with an emphasis on (you guessed it) drifting based tricks and sweet moves. Information about a release date is yet to come. Drift Stage official site posted:Drift Stage is a modern evolution of the classic arcade racer, bringing the gameplay up to date a bit while keeping the late 80's style intact. Oh and eye searing visuals. It has those too, and it is glorious. There's not a ton out about it yet, but it really reminds me of Outrun for the Sega Genesis. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwnSXwGZVWs Rock Paper Shotgun article for those who care abut such things: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/04/drift-stage-retro-3d-racer/ Official site: http://www.driftstagegame.com/

Pretty. Never really been into racing games, but at least this one looks nice!

Really hoping they'll have some proper upscaling modes so it really looks like I'm playing on a piece of poo poo 640x480 monitor.

Man, I might get this game just for the 80s as gently caress soundtrack. I hope they have a Delorean and a Daytona Spyder.

Looks like it's got Daytona's snap to center coming out of drifts.

Yeah, it's super old school, right down to the cars being really obviously on a pivot. I kinda wonder if they'll stay that way.

i hope so, realism is cancer to the racing genre there's another cool arcadey racer being made by some other guys as well, albeit more focused on the 90s than the 80s: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bywfy_hcq_s

If I remember right, this is by the same folks who are also making Sky Rogue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qToWLEFJLVI They are totally cool people and I dig their low-fi, high-res style.

I am loving sick to death of retro visuals and art styles in games. Makes them look so generic and boring. Sometimes - very occasionally - it is done right. And holy crap is this done right.

I wouldn't even call it retro. It's designed to evoke the style of 80s/early 90s games, but the actual style they're using is quite different and unique. Much like realism is cancer to racing games, photorealism is cancer to graphics and cool NPR techniques like this are awesome.

It looks like the original ridge racer but with worse graphics and less sick gabba music

Ridge Racer was a 90's game so, duh.

I'm surprised at how guitar-heavy the soundtrack is so far- I expected something more 80's and Outrun-synthy.
|
# ? Aug 26, 2014 13:33 |
I like the guitars. Sure, games at the time didn't sound like that, but a lot of the music did.

Yup, gratuitous guitar riffs are just as 80s as Synth. Just watch any 80s action movie or Miami Vice.

The colors in this are gorgeous, and it evokes the era it wants to evoke really strongly without being restricted to mimicking it(which is hard to do). Really interested in seeing more of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMLJVpT7-CY I'm loving loving the sound this guy has going on. Here's hoping the eventual kickstarter goes well. I know they're planning on making one happen but they wanna have something Ready For Prime Time before they start one. edit:

I'm really glad that the cars are now countersteering through the turn instead of steering into the turn constantly. It makes a big difference in my head. It also better have splitscreen.

I always thought there were cycles where graphics generally stopped being timeless (Super Mario World still holds up vs very early 3D games that are an eyesore) but this may have partially proved me wrong. The low-res unfiltered texture look on the cars is loving gorgeous. I guess it's just good design and having a higher resolution to project onto.

Just need to add in dwindling fuel and guns and this would make a perfect Road Blasters update.

Delko Duck's stuff reminds me of the cartoony look of the Megaman Legends games. Huge, colourful pixels on simple models, and it all just works, as a stylistic choice.

Yeah, it works for some games depending on the textures. Incredible Crisis is another good example. I'm glad to see someone attempting it these days.
